Foot in mouth? (Huma)

Ok, word of warning, this may offend *you*.
To start with, has anyone looked at the people around the arena lately? Lots of new faces. Problem is, most of them have a "better than you" attitude. True, we *all* get this from time to time, myself included. But, some more than others. I took a small break from RhyDin, and what did I come back to? Arrogance...disrespect...slander, mud throwing, and childish bickering over the stupidest things. When i first came to the arena in may of '97,
this place was fun. Few ever insulted anybody. When an insult or disrespectful thing happened, it was takin to the rings and solved...what do we do now? Bicker and argue about it forever. Most of the newer people here are cowards I say. Not all, but most. I remember way back when the death match was used to solve extreme grudges...a truely bararic way to solve a problem, but effective none the less. I remember being in one myself with a man who
disrespected the women of the arena. How many people remember the guy known as "Chivarly"? If you remember him, you know what I am talking about.
Anyway, what is the point of this letter? I am not just complaining about some of the people around here...I am making a promise to do something about it. First off, I can not be hypocritical...I am not a god, I am not immortal, I have no magical skills..i am just a average human man, nothing special about me except i have some skills with a sword. Lately I have had an attitude yes, and it's been haughty. That's not me tho, I *try* and keep my
sense of humor forward. Unfortunately, some of the people around me make me forget I am actually a gentleman.
Ok, now, with all that said...it's time for action against the jerks of the arena...and they know who they are. I'm adjusting my attitude as of this post. Look around, where have all the old school vetrans gone? They are tired of the rude people here anymore and are moving on to better places. Makes me sick. The best people have already left. It's time to do something....maybe we should reincorperate the death match....we'll see...or maybe i am
just putting my foot in my mouth while stirring the pot. My appologies to any who read this and don't get my point, I at times babble pointlessly....comes with being around arrogant idiots. So..what am i going to do? I am making a promise to do *something* about all thses people..what I cannot say yet. Actions for each will very from person to person. But this post is ment to call back some of our best patrons. People who know respect, honor, and
know how to be humble and leave thier "I am god and your not" attitude at the door.
As one patron used to say..."Lets gitter done!"

You know, Huma,
You're right. I've seen the same thing happen progressively. The newer patrons have more disrespect and less care about history and tradition. Death Matching may be going a bit too far, especially with the Ward of the Arena. I've seen so many leave, too many good people who grew tired of the goings on. I often struggle to find a reason to continue myself.
I feel that if I took a leave, I probably would be coming back as an unknown. I would recognize Bishop if he came back. MadMadMax I even met once, I'd recognize him if he came back. Several other greats come to mind. But you know what? Noone in the Arena can honestly say they've even heard of these people. Despite the fact that I've seen and talked about them in an open room.
Know what. They probably won't even care.
I stopped going to the Inns because they were becoming a slum. In fact, I still refer to my friends going there as Slumming.
Seems to me the Arena is becoming a Slum as well.
So, I expect people to say now.." If you don't like it, do something about it, make it work right"
I say, Look at the tools I have to work with. Disrespectful children who's only concern is for winning and bragging rights. You Rank and Title mean ABOSLUTELY nothing if the only reason you have it is to brag and show off. The Fact that you can Win a duel every so often, or more often than losing means Jack to anyone if you don't have the respect for your opponent's skill. For example, I may hate Lupton, as its no secret, but I have a good
respect for his skill.
I've seen very little in those terms lately, or for the last several months from any of the newer duelists. It's all become a "Me, Me, Me" attitude.
I've got No reason to stay here in the arena and duel my heart out. But you know what, I do it anyway. Know what, Because I hold the past with a deep respect. Maybe some of these kids need to learn it.
Now I've rambled on enough.

::reads over the post.. nodding:: Hmm..
Well, I admit to having the same nostalgia for the-- and I do so hate using this term as it has already been beaten to death-- "old days." The one thing that I always find intriguing about this kind of digust at what the arena has become is that every year people talk about how great it was the year before and how bad this year is. I guarantee that about a year from now people will be refering to these days-- which are currently the "bad days" -- as
the "good old days." I suppose such is the way of life.

Hey, don't look to me as 'one of the boys', because I'm not, but I've been here for oh....a year now, I even I can see what has happened over the past...oh....ummmmm, since Nova challenged Dal, that to me sticks in my head as the turning point, the most recent downfall of the DoS, the only one I've even been around to see. Ya see, that was the last truely honorable occasio I can remember, though my views may be blurred as I was a supreme novice
at the time.
Personally, I know only a bit of the 'really old days', and I wonder how damn fun they musta been. Well, if it's time for some action, start a bandwagon, I'll think about jumpin on. Pass out lists with names I'll start on the S-V's, as I have some scores to settle in that group.

I find this absolutely fascinating. I made a post about this, and not only said I was going to do something about it but announced the formation of a House that was going to do something. True, many disagreed with one of the symptoms of the problem. The problem is the same however. Simple lack of respect and sportsmanship.
I remember Bishop, vaguely. I'd recognize him if he returned. I knew MadMadMax very well, and it would be impossible not to recognize him. I don't know what they'd think of the Arena today. I really don't care, I must admit. I am more worried about that the people who are still here think about it. I would like to see an improvement. I don't know, however, if there is much we can do other than try to set a good example.

Jola thinks long and hard before penning a note for this thread. She takes it up with nary an emotion in sight.
Gentlemen,
Know what? I've been married to Ulath for more than four years. Know what that means? I've been around since before then.
I knew Max personally, we were good friends. I knew Bishop way back then. Dalamar was around back then, so was PsyMystic, Rand alTan spent more time in DoS, I knew Siera Red personally, Xenograg and Amaltea when they were just a young couple.
I could drop names all over the place, I knew most of them. Was it better back then? No. We just knew each other a bit better, took time for each other more. Now, no one spends much time in the Arena to get to know each other. It's duel, duel, duel.
I used to sit in the Red Dragon Inn and drink with Mad Max. Amaltea and Suzielle threw outstanding parties. I have no idea for what I was known by, no one seems to remember I was around then.
But I was, and I'm here today, and I will stay and I've mellowed. I will continue to do what I've always done, quietly and not on the boards. I will make friends, and soon they won't be newbies, but a part of DoS.

Hmm...I don't remember the "old days", but I'd have to say I've been here a little over a year now..beginning of last summer, and things have changed drastically...I honestly can say it's not all "their" fault..the braggarts I mean. Some of it, I can safely say..is our faults. Nowadays, Ye can walk into the Arena or Annex and say hello to some people ye "thought" ye knew and they would blow ye off without even thinking about it...I mean, not even a
"Hi" 2 letters, or even more effort a "Hello". Sure, some the new ones are rotting the Duel of Swords, but, like friut, there has to be a bruise before it rots...and I believe that bruise came from within ourselves.

You know what Gnort Ball? If it ain't 'Me me me' then it's 'You you you'. If you got a problem with them new pushovers, give them a spanking and whip them into shape, otherwise shuttup. You ain't helping, you're just complaining, and if you keep on complaining, soon enough even the complaints won't want to hear it.

All I shall say is that newbies come and go. Some shall stay too. We were all newbies once, and no one has been around forever. Don't be too harsh, give them all a chance. Things may be bad now, but that doesn't mean they can't get any better. We shall see what the future holds, but we shouldn't be too pessimistic.

So in other words, Agrenish, I should do to them what I do to you on a regular basis? Interesting, I think I'll do just that.

You know what Gnort Ball, I can't even remember the last time we fought, but I can. It was almost three months ago today, yeah you whipped me good, but that was once and all it did was end a four duel winning streak, and I can not remember the time we've dueled before then if ever.
So let me ask you this Gnort Ball, how is that a regular basis? Regular means more than once, and basis means over a commen period of time. Once ain't going to cut it kid and you cheap shots are weak. So keep talking and snivillin' around while you complain about everything that is boo hoo bad.

Regular basis meaning to the effect of all our duels, I think you may have won once. ;:shrugs:: We can always try it again. The choice is yours.

I shall add one more thing. The arena is bad with all of the newbies coming in, but as you can see, some of the oldies still fight too....just read the posts.

Yeah, yeah...rant and rave all about the newbies.
Now, I've been around here for oh....seven....eight? Years...Yeah, I knew all the old-timers....hell, Bishop was pretty much my Dueling teacher.
But hey, ya'll tell me this...how many people would we have around here nowadays if there were no "newbies" here? (Newbie assuming...oh....1.5 years or less.) Granted, *some* of them are big-egoed horses' arses, but that's the minority....honest.
Then again...maybe some of those horses' arses just need a little direction rather than being labeled "stupid, big-ego newbie". Heck, I know that I wasn't perfect when I first got here.
