Well said, Gnimish. Very well said. Of course, I would probably have a hard time being nice to say, Ace, but Jake really isn't too bad a guy if you don't jump on him too hard. And Anon didn't use to be so bad as he is now. Some people really do just need direction, advice, and a positive role model or two.
In some ways, the problem isn't the newbies. It is us. How do we treat the newbies? Do we give them a positive example? Or are we very easily offended and treat them like dirt? I am as guilty in some ways as others are. I have too short a temper and too little patience. I try to be decent to people, but in some cases I don't succeed. In other cases I can't seem to force myself.
What is more, often the examples they see the most of are the worst ones possible. They see us involved in petty feuds on the Board. They see a challenger berate and insult a Baron. They see a Baron, in accepting a challenge, cruely mistreat his challenger. These examples are more glaring and more obvious than the positive examples. What is easier to notice? A loudmouth hurling insults on the board? Or the good and polite man who refrains from
posting anything because he does not wish to insult anyone?
Some things for us all the think about.

Jerks, they're everywhere. Someone being considered a jerk is purely opinion by the person that's name-calling. Personally, I believe that you are one of the biggest jerks that I know. Before I reached any status you had this "holier-than-thou" behavior. You conistently treated me as an inferior, etc. etc. You were like this "new people," if not worse.
Your post sounded like a lot of complaining and whining. You said you had a solution to this; I failed to find it within your writing. Perhaps, yes, a year ago was a better time for DoS. Perhaps two, three, four, heck, six years ago was better. You have to keep in mind Huma, time change, as do people. This is not back in the day when Dal wasn't Overlord. This is not the time when Alkron held the first ring, or Gnimish. As much as you hate it, this is
now. Unless you have a sensible, not to mention fair, plan, these times aren't going to change.

Its not that I agree with what Lily said about Huma, but some people that have been here longer do sort of think they are better than new people because they know more about the dueling and have been here longer. No matter what you might think of someone, when they -volunteer- to work in the Duel of Swords... or anywhere for that matter... they are worthy of some kind of respect.
Compared to alot of our staff, Huma hadn't been a caller for that long... but he was a dranned good caller. If he made a mistake, he cleared it up quick. If the queue was deep, he called extra duels to help out. If a caller needed help and he was around, he pitched in and helped.
If you can't treat him with dignity and respect, then maybe you are the ones who should leave, not him.
Special note... That is a -generic- you, not aimed at any specific individuals... unless the statement really does apply to you, the reader.

I have to agree with Lady Drake. Whatever we all may think of Huma personally, and it is no secret that I like him, he did more than his fair share of the work as a Caller. He was always willing to help out on nights he was not scheduled. I was witness to several occasions when it was obvious that he would rather be dueling, and changed into his uniform to lend a hand.
Personal dislikes are just that. They should not prevent anyone from valuing or respecting a good Caller who is always doing his fair share, or more.

Huma, your exactly right in everything you said and I hope people, not to name Jake, Anon or Dick or anything... -are- offended by this. You speak of the old days when things like this weren't around. I never knew those days and I'm sick and tired of it.
I'm saying this to make a point. IN about 6 months of dueling I have gone to GM (14 WoL) Gone up to 20 WoL and nothing else. Nothing. Dueling is becoming more frusterating that ever for me.
Then I come to the Annex or Arena to relax and have fun... and all I hear now is yammering about politics or about who did what, about death matches, etc. etc. etc. Dueling used to be a priority for me, then it was a hassle. Mainly to keep warlord. But now, I have the oppurtunity to come back, and try to get two wins tonight to keep warlord. But I am not. I'd rather bw 100 Losses over Wins then listen to people whine and complain.
Now, I have reached the point as of about a week ago where the positives of dueling are outweighed by the negatives. Mainly because of the people in DoS that feel as if they are better than everyone. Or... must prove themselves to be better.
All this long stuff I have wrote comes down to the main thing:
I'm not leaving... but I won't be dueling very much at all. IT's not worth it anymore. I'll mostly be around during unofficial hours talking to the few good friends I have made here.
