Tyrin entered the cavern and tried to picture Beka in this dismal place.
Perhaps, he thought, it was cheerier when there were people about. By
Illior's light he could not see it so, but with the thought of Beka he supposed
it was possible, for she oft times brightened dull days.
Dry eyed he went about his business, he had to think of it as such, it was
unbecoming of one of the Wolf Brigade to act in any type of extremely senti-
mental fashion. Still he paused at his labors several times before he had
completed the tasks; each hesitation a longer pause than the last, the news
still stung his soul bitterly.
Once he had secured the black ribbon across her banner above the fourth
ring he, with stiff strides, moved toward the message board; tacking up the
notice for any to see.

Notice of Demise
On the twenty fifth day of the month of the Serpent
the Lady Beka Cavish,
of the Queens' Calvary
Protectorate of Verdun
was striken down whilst defending her people.
Her honor and generousity sung throughout
the lands will, henceforth, ring with a mournful timbre.
A memorial will be held at the City of Rhiminee'
for any that wish to pay last respects.
Illior light her path and grant her peace.

Tyrin traced the words with his fingers, then the stamps of the Queen and
of the steward from Verdun; they still seemed no more real to him than the
first few times he read them. He could still hear her bright laughter at the
spring festival two years ago; he doubted these words would ever seem
as realistic as that memory, he hoped not in any case.
He could feel the muscles in his throat tightening uncomfortably again and
before it had a chance to bloom he turned from the board and strode swiftly
from the dim cavern.

Scanning the boards, he comes across this notice. He reads it, blinks a few times, shakes his head and reads again.
With a sigh he lowers his head.

Delays....damnable delays. And now he had reached Verdun too late.
Savage stood in the cool, stone catacomb that contained the sarcophagus of the Lady Beka. The only light came from a weakly burning, slightly-tilted sconced torch...and from the blue-green glow of his activated digi-pad.
It has been but hours since breath last passed over the now pale lips of his love, and the memorial would not be held until the following noon. There was a chance - slim, but a chance nonetheless. They would never know. No one would.
His fingers worked quickly over the keys. Computer talked to computer and the Homostasis Unit activated aboard his ship. He heard footsteps descending the the old stone stairs. He worked faster.
"C'mon. What's the delay?"
>> Unit activated . . . waiting<<
Several more keystrokes.
>> Transferral Process Ready . . . waiting<<
A final hit of a key sent the shipboard computer into action. An ionic glow appeared about Savage and the sarcophagus, lighting up the entire catacomb.
A few seconds later the guard arrived in the chamber and everything looked as it should - a single torch and a cold, stone sarcophagus. All was as it should be. The memorial would go well.

She came across the notice, a sadness penetrating her heart. She teleported to the Desperate Arena for it was here she had come to know the quiet Lady Beka. She wandered alone in the silence, remembering those evenings when she had teased and cajoled the sad young widow. She remembered the night she had spoken to Beka of Wil Savage. The memory brought a tiny sad smile to her lips. A warrior was the Lady Beka, yet fragile in her
way. Jonalyn, as was her wont, wept quietly, here, alone, for the passing of the warrior. "May thine path be gentle under thine feet, lass.", she murmured softly, "Thine spirit soar among th' warriors."
