A very soft groan... and Jaycy pulled herself up, her good hand digging into the couch as she struggled to lift her weight. Finally getting into the desired position, she looked around her bedroom. Near her head, sleeping, sat Rix... in the chair he must have sat for hours, first waiting for her to come home from her shift, then until she fell asleep on
the couch, before allowing himself sleep.
After watching him a moment, she allowed her own head to drop... not from fatigue, but from shame. He hadn't gone unhurt, and she knew him seeing her as she was must have hurt him... scared him. Nick, too... they had both been hurt, trying to protect her, something she felt she should have been able to do. And yet, she wasn't able to stop the thing from hurting them... she was powerless. And she still hurt, too.
Her right arm lay motionless in its sling, held there so she wouldn't move it, injuring it more. Her leg... her left leg had been crushed when the thing crashed down on her, and now, only half healed, lay between two boards, the best they could think of to do at the time. She knew she would probably never walk normally, and it would take some time before she could use her right arm effectively, but that didn't bother her too much. She knew she
could overcome those obstacles... they were nothing, compared to her voice.
But gods... why her voice? "Well," she thought bitterly, "at least I won't haveta worry about saying the wrong thing anymore." The wound had healed, at least superficially, but she just couldn't speak. It hurt more than anything, to not be able to *vocalize* her feelings, to not be able to sing... she looked over to Rix for another moment, and a small tear slid down her cheek as she looked away.
Carefully lowering herself, Jaycy lay on the couch, one thought after another passing, and none of them happy. Outside, she was just battered...she would heal. Inside, however... inside, the loss of her voice and her guilt were breaking her.
Battered and Broken...

"Wil is my husband!" she said to Jonalyn, laughing. She'd been laughing a lot the last hour or so, since Jaycy's battle was over. Nothing left to do but laugh.
Jola could hear the sounds of the fight, but couldn't help. So damned helpless, like she's never been before. Thoughts of -would she ever duel again- were far, far from her mind, and in fact hadn't entered her thoughts but once, in the face of the potential death surrounding her. And now, here's Jaycy, crying out for help, and all Jola could do is listen and hide, and pray that Jaycy would survive as she had.
She'd rushed off to get a healer, thank god the catacombs where they were had some fair structure, it wasn't too difficult to do by feel. She had to shout to be heard in the annex proper, but finally she was heard, and someone came with her to help. She felt so very guilty for not helping her friend, after promising to stick by her side, they were all three to stick together, and Jola... Warlord of DoS ... couldn't do a thing to help her.
Things happened, Jaycy was somewhat healed...except for that she couldn't speak. That stupid light bulb that flashes over someone's head in a cartoon went off. "Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil." Jola was the monkey who couldn't see. Jaycy now...couldn't speak. Oh Sid, beware for your ears.
And she started laughing. It was too much to bear. The guilt, the trauma of losing her precious eyesight. Lab monkeys they were, watched and prodded and trained. Lab monkeys led miserable, captive lives, forever waiting for the next pain.
She laughed herself to sleep this night.

Confused. So confused.
My fault..mine. Should have protected Jola.
Should have saved Jaycy.
All my fault.
Sid sat in Dal's house in silence, her head clutched between her hands. The silence was thick and the only thing she could hear was that small voice in her mind, poking and prodding at her.
Beware your ears, Sid.
My ears? Yes, your ears.
Jola had told her that. Beware your ears. Jola had lost her sight, Jaycy her voice, and now it was her turn to lose her hearing.
What can I do? Maybe I should let it kill me.
But what about...?
Well...
It is more than your life, you know.
Tears ran down her cheeks as she stood, grabbing her cloak and heading for the door.
It's more than your life.
As Sid passed through the door she disappeared, teleported herself in the center of the Arena and waited. She must finish this, so that it could be finally over...for everyone's sake.
It's more than your life.
I know...but in the long run, they'll thank me.

The game had continued. The attacks had come to pass. And he was pleased. Oh, how he was pleased. Such entertainment value was this. The three matches. Elgarette, the Third Child, against his prized Sachiel. The loss of that Angel was regrettable, but was expected. He hadn't expected a few things, however, and what information was gathered from his Angel during the attack was priceless. He
hadn't expected to take a life. Nor had he actually wanted to. But it happened. He didn't know, rare for him, who knew about this. It would certainly add no complications for the grand scheme. The damage was done. And The Third Child was Greatly wounded.
Ashleana, the Second Child, had had her attack as well. She fought the twins, Israfel. Two who are one. That battle had been very entertaining, more action than even he had anticipated. And she had been severely hurt as well. When Israfel dropped from the rafters and crushed the leg of Ashleana, the price for her scream was most worth paying. She would survive.
Fici, the First child. Her attack came first from most likely his most creative creation. Matariel, the Acidic Spider. A great deal of action in that bout. He should have sold tickets, had he been inclined in that way. The blood and sweat from Fici was a treasure to watch as she attempted to avoid the Angel. The loss of her arm was an actual surprise, he hadn't expected the straight forward, and likely insane attack maneuver. Which,
coincidentally, resulted in the loss of her cybernetic prosthesis. No matter, she would gain a new one.
Then the talk with her. Separate, after the attacks. He made it known that something she had thought was fact, may, in actuality, be fiction. With a simple phrase, he forced her to rethink everything she believed to be true in the last few weeks, caused her to wonder if just maybe, the dead wasn't so. He had given her a riddle, and a prize for the correct answer. Now, she has to think on her next move. Oh, what fun this was.
How he phrased one line was most enjoyable to him, and caused her a deal of frustration. " 'I see' said the Blind Fici to the Deaf Elgarette while the Mute Ashleana screamed." What an interesting turn of phrase he thought.
He then thought of the others who have gotten involved.
Dalamar ar'Daumon, Lover of Elgarette.
Verceterix Gavin Favre, Lover of Ashleana.
Wil Savage, Close companion of Fici.
Kalamere ar'Din, Friend to Fici.
Percival de Clermont, Friend to Fici and Ashleana, present for Elgarettes battle.
Evan Rynth, Assisted in the attack on Elgarette.
Nicholas O'Doyle, companion of Ashleana,
Onyx Solari, friend to Fici.
Should they be punished in some way for their assistance? This is something for him to brood on, now.
