Petition for Realignment
From: xjaycyndax@aol.com (XJaycyndaX)
Date: 12 Oct 1998 18:48:40 EDT
M'lord Dalamar Ar'Daumon,
When I entered in the Duel of Swords months ago, and when I learned of the titles therein, I always believed alignment was purely a political stance, and that friendships were not involved, and that they were separate, especially where loyalties are concerned. However, I realize now I was wrong.
When I first even began taking notice of the politics within the Arena, I believed that some of the things you stood for, and the policies you enforced were wrong, and I felt I could not stand with you, politically... and because of that, would choose to align Renegade, should I ever get a Barony. However, I am now in that position, and I find myself wondering... are political loyalties really that important, that I cannot stand with someone I
consider a friend, and raise my blade in his defense? Are politics really worth it? Between my gaining the ring, and now, I realize truly they are not.
We discussed politics earlier, and I kept wondering, should someone ask me to raise my blade against you, for politics, would I? No, I would not. As a friend, I cannot raise my blade against you, except in a friendly duel... how you have described a friendly duel. I was asked by a friend if I ever intended to use my status as a Renegade Baroness against you, and I said no. I couldn't, and I won't. Why, if the Barony is purely political, wouldn't
I be able to? Because your friendship is too important to me, to try to even think of doing such.
I have learned much in the last few days, about friendships, and about loyalties, and politics.... the former two being truly important to me, and honor, and the latter not very important at all. I told you, I could not see myself as a Neutral Baroness, as my beliefs are too strong one way or the other to merely "sit on the fence." For me, I do not see it as an option.
Which leaves me two choices... Renegade, and feel I have betrayed myself and a friend over my political beliefs, or Loyal, where the things I value most lie in harmony... when faced with such a choice, I find the answer easy.
While I may not agree with you fully politically, I stand by you, as a friend, and will willingly raise my blade in your personal defense. The reasons I stand by you hold much more importance than anything I believe on a political level, and as such, humbly ask you consider my request, to be realigned as a Loyal Baroness.
Respectfully,
Jaycynda Ashleana

I feel compeled to speak my mind on this subject. I am new to this land but I happened to be in the room when the Baroness and the Overlord spoke on this matter. I tend to agree with the view stating that loyalties are not based on politics but on friendship. I could no more raise my sword to a friend than my own mother (if she were still alive), even if I disagreed with him or her.
::thinks a moment then adds::
Thank you for your time and please excuse me if I have spoken out of line.

Nah, loyalty is solely based on politics.
I hate Dal's guts, but da gimp pays me a truckload of money each month so I stay loyal.

The issue of loyalty is not so cut and dry as it may be based on either. The choice will depend on the person who makes the declaration. Friendship and Loyalty mean different things to different people. Jaycy has decided that her friendship to Dalamar is more important than her ideals on certain policies he might have. This is perfectly legitimate, though also the type of loyalty that can be criticized as blind.
On the other hand you might have a Baron such as I. I believe that the fact I am friends with a man does not inherently mean he is suitable to his title. As such it is my own ideals to which I must listen and when an Overlord, even one I call friend, betrays those ideals I shall take a renegade's stance. This too, I like to believe, is perfectly legitimate... yet it is this type of belief that often brings about accusations of being a "shallow
politician".
Neither is right nor wrong and both shall always be held in contempt by some.. Such is the way of the world I suppose.

Jeff,
How much does he pay you to be loyal? I ask because he gives me a few satchels when I just help him cross the street.
