To anyone in consideration of Retirement from the Duel of Swords:
I once did a "retirement" thing a while back. Only, back then, making a big point and running away wasn't "in". If you retired, you did it because you started to get bored of the Duel of Swords, not because you couldn't handle someone beating you.
Now, back to the story. I retired, left the Arena, left the Inn, I actually left the plane of RhyDin entirely. One week later, I had second thoughts, but I stayed away. By the third week, dueling left my mind entirely.
However, three months afterward, I thought again about Dueling. I remembered the joy of winning, the friendliness shared, even the time I got my first Fancy(Which I lost 2 weeks later). So, I pawned my favorite sword to get passage back to RhyDin. I occasionally entered the Inn, but I was especially there to make sure the Rules of the Duels had not changed.
To my pleasure, things were mostly how I left them. Since I didn't whine before leaving, I re-entered to no gripes, or applause. But, hey, I had a good time, as I continue to do.
Bottom line? Retirement isn't worth it. If you leave because you can't duel, then your sword must be weak. If you leave "to make a point", your words must be weak. And either way, you eventually come back. So don't bother. It's worthless. And expensive.

It is only worthless to those of the lower ranks. If a Warlord decides that they need a break from the duel of swords they need to retire or else forfeit the rank they earned.

If you think the only two reasons people retire is because their sword is weak or because they are making a "statement," then I agree with Lupton that you insult a person's individual reasons, or needs, to retire.
Not everything hinges upon two choices, nor does it depend on "either/or" statements. Life is certainly more complex than that.
Just a few comments for what they are worth.

'Tis truly a pity that my post was interrupted by the Great Whiner considering my statements insults. I wonder why a post about the life of a retired dueler, followed by a statement of how retirement means little to nothing, is an "insult."
Maybe I just find the "retirement" bit overdone. By referring to the worthlessness of retirement, I meant it's worthless as a statement, not that leaving is for whiners. Attempt to acertain intent, before flaming. I said that TWO causes of retirement (Weak swords and weak words) are bad, not all of them. Grow up, O Great Whiner.
