Sharing some history...
From: valmion@aol.com (Valmion)
Date: 02 Nov 1998 22:23:29 EST
I was browsing through some old histories of this place and happened upon a parchment that I felt I would share with everyone. This simple poem was found on the mantle in the arena almost four years ago. It was the eve of the tournament that would determine the sport's first nine barons. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did then, and did once more today.
A duelers poem...
'Twas the night before Barondom
and all through the rings
Not a sound could be heard
Not a windows ping!
The crews and the foremen
and all done their work
In the afternoon hours
no detail was shurked.
The rings were all swept out
the bloodstains removed
Then gently transported to the Great Hall
DoS RDI Approved!
Strung there is a banner
of silver and gold letters
That clearly and simply states
"Glory to the first nine ever!"
And the warlords all
were tucked into their beds
with dreams of the title "Baron"
dancing in their heads.
And Commoners and Swordsmen
and Master's at Arms
and Grand Masters each
would envy their charm.
Then the cutting and thrusting
and stop hits would rain
until nine Warlord's stood
Their destiny engrained.
Oh the flashbulbs, microphones
and the reporters all 'round
scribbling and scribbling
each utterance, each sound.
And at last the forged rings
of the Baron's would rest
Upon the strong nimble fingers
Of duelings best.
Born then the era
and the right's of accord
as alignment is selected
to the Mad Overlord!
And when it's all over
and the nine are decreed
You may very well hear the words spoken,
"Ain' i' wunduhful, um sti' th' freekin' Ovuhluhd!"
"Hehehe."

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did ;)
Cheers,

M'Lord Valmion,
Thank ye, t'was a kindess th' thou hast shared a glimmering 'o that long agon tourney. Tis yet some few still wandering th' realms th' do recall th' glorious eve.

The next day, after the finding of that poem, the Overlord himself, Mad Mad Max, posted this to the cork board in the arena. Once again, I hope you find this little trip back in time as enjoyable as I have.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The tall man walks up to the microphone, a strangely twisted, black metal affair, the top of which is hammered into the shape of a birds talon squeezing a large, mishapen cockaroach. Without fanfare, except of course for the trumpets, the Overlord begins speaking into the cockaroach.
"Thys iz Ma'Ma'Max, yer Ovvuhlo'd."
"T'nyte iz th' nite, awl yu wahlo'dz owt theyuh. Th' Baruhn'z Ternuhmint. An' aftuh th' Ternamint iz ovvuh, nyne uv yu, th' prowd an' th' few, wyll duhklayuh yer uhleegincez, eethuh t' be a Renuhgayde Baruhn, er a Loyuhl wun."

"A - wat!... now I know why the man proclaimed himsel' ta be doubly mad".
Soothing her eyes with a light touch of a tapered hand, she chuckles in reflection.
"This small glance inta the mind o' such an unco dunnie - wassel who made his mark sae assuredly upon the psyche of the sport is a rare treat. Just as soon as I once again regain focus, o' me eyes, I shall thank ye."

I remember him, first time I met Mad Max he was walking around one of the inns, starked naked and quite drunk.

::the guardian muses::
Didn't I see him trying to un-stick a troll from a spitoon...? Or maybe he was *in* the spitoon that was stuck on a troll's posterior...? Something that happened at Arelia's Trinket Shoppe a long time ago.
Thanks for the memories, Valmion.
