Further OL Challenge Notes
From: lordovdale@aol.com (LordovDale)
Date: 12 Nov 1998 22:57:26 EST
Patrons of the Duel of Swords,
In the spirit of keeping the community informed about the pending challenged between Baron MacDonnaugh and myself, I have a bit of further news. I would like to make everybody aware of the fact that Baron MacDonnaugh has refused my offer of the Best of Three format for the challenge. I am unaware of his reasons.
respectfully,
Lord Dalamar Ar'Daumon
Overlord of the Duel of Swords
Lord of the Dale

Change alignment and challenge in the same breath, then refuse a best of three.
Yes, this is certainly honorable. And best for the community.

Since when was refusing the Overlord request of a best-of-three match is dishonorable? When the Loyals are so concerned with their honor that they take every step possible to label those that oppose them dishonorable?
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

NB: In no way do I mean that the Loyalists are in anyway dishonorable. I only mean to refer to others that have accused them of being such. And due to these accusations, I would think them to be insecure.

Rules concerning Barons From the UTC
4. Loyal Barons may change their alignment at anytime, in writing, to all
Barons, the Overlord and the Standings Keeper.
Consider this Veceterix Gavin Favre.
I have done as the rules allow and to a tee. I did notify all parties as well as the community.
Furthermore I did state my reasons which was not a prerequisite.
Is this what you deem a dishonorable act?
Concerning the Overlord and the Test of Worthiness From the UTC
6. The Overlord may offer the challenger a best of three series. This is an alternative to the "Test of Worthiness"
The key word Warlord, is Offer. An offer is something that does not have to be accepted.
I must assume this is the act of treason to the peoples of DoS.
Perhaps were I to promise you or a member of a house, lets say Lathadoscia for the sake of arguement, an intercession by the and when the time comes for the match, I simply work a better deal with your opponent, the lesser of two evils in my eyes for I prefer his allegiance to yours because he is a greater threat in the long run.
Or perhaps you will look at this nights posting by the Honorable Warlord Daegarth Mithmellon, and mayhaps deem that the public was served by the treachery exposed therein.
Do not attempt to sully my name when you have yer back up for no good cause. I stand by my decision and take whatever comes of it. Say what you will were your opinion is concerned, but remember laddy buck, I know from whence I speak.

Seamus,
My friend, I believe the fuss is over this.. no one to date has refused the best of three, perhaps none thought that there was a choice involved.
Dalamar, by his own word, has said he will not test Barons. IF he choses to test or accept Intercession by a loyal baron then he has broken his word.as per the public notice he placed here some time ago.
My only regret is that I will not be able to be there due to previous obligations.
Fondly,
Collie

Collie,
Just so yer not so surprised, Dal said he was offerin' Seamus da best of 3 so as he could keep his deal despite my request. Now dat Seamus declined, I can only assume because he feels he has a better shot at winnin' in one quick duel where he can surprise Dal, I'll be showin' up after all and ya never know - might just my shot ta help.
Seamus,
Not sayin' I'm any more dangerous ta face dan Dal, but ya had yer shot ta face him and only him fer da title, so if he names me or anyone else Champ, hope ya don't complain
Sincerely,
~J

Collie,
At what point does public notice of a change of policy equate a promise to the community? Previous to that notice, Dalamar's policy was to test challengers he believed should be tested, regardless of rank, so when he said he was changing that to the present policy, was he also breaking his word?
In short, I would say no. There is a difference between promise and policy and notifying the public does not make one beholden to them. There is a promise involved here, so Dalamar wouldn't be completely free to go back on this policy, but that promise wasn't made to the community at large.

Chance Stumpy Dumplings? Didn't Dalaber make a promise not to long ago that there'd be no interceeding on Baron's? Or did your distorted veiw on honor just get worse?

Actually, if Dal has chosen not to ever test barons again, and told the community this, then I think he should be kept to his word. Just because the odds seem against him means that he can suddenly break a promise, as Huma did.
Not that I ever made it public, except now, but I am not going to ask anyone to intercede for me when I get challenged, at least not until I successfully defend the ring once myself. Just because I didn't appreciate who my challenger was (Agrenish) means that I have the right to break my policy.
Now that this is known, I wonder. If I were to suddenly change this policy because of some weak loophole, would I be considered an honorless, oathbreaking, yada yada yada, baron?
I happen to think so, probably by both groups of people (or three, if there are people neutral on the subject); those who think Dal should keep his word and policy, and those who don't.

It's better than that Varro, listen to this.
>>As to the Overlord: If I find myself now needing to rethink whether I will continue to follow these ideals, I certainly cannot hold another to them. As such, I release him from his oath. <<
That's from Kally. So, though Dalaber promised the entire DoS no more interceeding on Baron's, yet this will allow him to do as he pleases.

You're not the only one who asked to test the Challenger, Jeff, so we'll have to see who can talk faster, I guess...
