"The Unnamed Dueler, (first captain of the Disengaged)"

The one to whom this refers, or at least, the one who thinks it does, finds it strange that he is thought to be dead, especially since he's standing right there reading the list.

Beside the name, in bright red, is written the word:

Alive

To all who believe this is a list of those who are Dead.

It is not.

It is a memoriam to those we no longer see often dueling in the Arena. Not an announcement of those we miss due to death. Certainly some are dead, but the majority on this list are alive.

Do not presume that because your name is mentioned on here that we think you're dead.

Thank you and hope for understanding,

"Ad Memoriam.." I was under the impression that it was a memory after death. But of course, first impressions aren't always the most truthful.

Simini chuckled softly, the sound lost in the din of the duels. She'd stolen a moment between matches to peruse the cork, an activity she'd once done every day. To come back now, after so many years, and see her name listed with "fond remembrances" in a post only weeks old... she found it humorous, actually.

Perusing the names brought back so many memories they threatened to become a maelstrom, but an almost welcome one all the same.

Ulath Fici. The name burned her eyes. Ulath, charming and provocative... and dead, or so she had thought until very recently. Indeed, it was the very night of her return to the Duel of Swords that the Lady leFay had broken the news to her that Ulath was not dead. Surprising though the news was, more surprising still was Simini's reaction to it.
Indifference was a welcome emotion - the former Baron, father of her never-born child, had influence on her no longer. Good.

Fantasy RC. This one brought a smile to her lips and an unconscious glance to her right hand. Whatever happened to that moonstone circlet ring, anyway? Even tonight in the ring, her thoughts had turned to Fantasy RC -- his lessons in dueling by karma were still troublesome for her.

Cymranger. The old man who had given her her beloved blade. Moredhil was still at her side, its simple onyx and emerald hilt the one constant in her life since the day it was given to her... except for that time she lost it to Kalamere in a duel for his life... or so she'd thought.

Baphelocutis. Simini just chuckled when she saw this name. She'd seen Baph not three nights ago... the great lizard had not changed at all.

Siera of Redwin. Ah, Siera... the Arena would forever exalt her name. Sim's full lips curved upward slightly at her fondest memory of Siera... sipping ale in the common room of the Inn, allowing the young Simini a candid interview for her column, "Simini's Swords". She'd felt a kinship to the woman ever since; her loss was great, indeed.

Phlag. The curving lips automatically tugged higher. The man in black. She'd spent a time or two in his penthouse upstairs; a most amusing man, indeed.

Bishop. The smile softened into sadness. Simini's last view of her mentor had been as an old, old man. He could barely speak. A silent prayer breathed from her lips as she wished him well, wherever he was.

Vixxenish and Hedda Hat. The two most stylish ladies the Arena has ever seen, to Simini's knowledge. Vixxenish had become Overlord shortly after Simini's debut in the rings, and she'd never forget the way the basement looked decorated in fuschia polka dots!

There were many others; teachers, friends, lovers and respected colleagues alike. How long she'd been away from these people, how much she'd forgotten of her life before... before. Strange.

Torquillian Aspendale. SwordBrother, lover, friend and protector. The day he left her had been one of the saddest days of her life, although the circumstances were understood. He had taught her to look inside of herself for answers; she had tried to teach him tolerance for all, even the Moriquendi. Strange that now she herself was the one with that difficulty.

At that point, she heard her name announced from the caller's couch. She turned abruptly to take her place in the ring.

To dance, always to dance. The music matters not.
