A Request

M'lords and Ladies,

It has recently come to my attention that several of my compatriots within the ranks of titled renegade nobility are below the requirements of a Warlord within our realm.

I would like to ask politely that the Barons in question attenuate themselves to overcoming this deficiet.....or possibly consider their positions and take the honorable measure in respect to their titles.

As some are well aware, Ford Prefect once held the 1st,I believe, for a period of two to three cycles while maintaining a record of only one win over loss. So while I cast no stones here.....I ask that we as Barons, as a whole....seek to represent the community we hold dear in the best possible light.

Not all can be as Jeffery Oakenshield to be sure. And I do not ask that. I merely ask that those that hold title, take the responsibility to maintain at least the requirements of those that strive, and strive well, within the ranks of Warlord. To do any else is but an insult to those worthy Warlords and belittles the title.

As I stated....I seek to cast no stones here. Merely to forward a concern of my own. No one is wrong, or dishonorable or evil because of my concern....it is, merely a concern that I wished to voice.

Be Well,
~Adonai Uziel

The woman cannot help but laugh softly as she peruses Uzie Poo's jottings.

Uzie Poo,

Wouldst be so kind ast to explain why thee wouldst request these barons to thin or reduce their severity, virulence or vitality? Perhaps thee wouldst also care to explain just what honorable measure thee hae in mind? Tis aire thee now setting thineself up ast one who hae anna concern for honourable measures?

Tis a mere record dinna make a Baron, Uzie Poo, or perhaps that hae escaped thine notice. Ast to belittling the title, Uzie Poo, thee ast well ast thine "compatriots", the oh so honourable, Jaycynda Asheleana, ast well as that lout, Cassius Gaius Maximius, nae to mention the Oathbreaker, Huma Dragonbane, 'represent' the community and daily belittle the title by thine examples.

How droll that thee, on the one hand, state thee ask they "...consider their positions and take honorable measure in respect to their titles.", yet go on to state thee "...seek to cast no stones.." If there be anna what insult the community and the titles, tis thee ast well ast the aforementioned Barons.

Do the community a favor, Uzie Poo, slither back under your rock. Thine very existence ist an oozing canker upon these ancient halls.

Not as though the opinion of a Swordsman counts, but I'll say it anyway:
It seems that if a duelist can defend his/her title, he/she should be allowed to keep that position. Just as a Warlord must retain a high WoL position to keep his/her rank, a Baron must stand numerous matches from those that wish to be on top. If a duelist is of legal requirements to hold a title, what makes it "honorable" to give it up? Especially because the forfeiture of these baronial ranks from someone of a lower WoL standing would cost them
more than one loss in rank.
I don't mean to insinuate that your posting is definitely 100% political, but I have noticed that you asked renegades in particular to retire. It seems to me that that would greatly lower their influence on the dueling world and protect your opinion against them.

Correction: "retire their positions as high-ranking duelists and Council members."

Actually, Quizxs, Adonai asked no one to *retire*... And certainly mentioned none by name or alignment that he's referring to. If you look at his missive carefully you see that all he mentions is to *attenuate themselves to overcoming this deficiet.....or possibly consider their positions and take the honorable measure in respect to
their titles.....*.... Of course Baron Uziel can correct me it I'm wrong, but I think that foremost he would prefer to see the Barons in question to garner at least enough WoL to maintain the rank of Warlord..... 15 it is, I believe. The second portion seems to be not so much a request that they retire, but rather giving them something to think about..... the option of *honorable* retirement should they
be unable to raise their WoL.....

Myself, I happen to be of the feeling that one of the *perks*, if you will, of being a Baron or Overlord is that a specified WoL isn't required to hold the rank... unlike the lower ranks. Myself, I wouldn't want to see that change. However, I can see his point that a Baron should be able to maintain a WoL of at least the next lower rank... I don't feel it's something to worry over though. Everyone goes through bad streaks, even Barons. Just ask
G..... Who knows.... this time next month they may all have brought them back up and everyone will wonder why the discussion ever took place in the first place.

::reviews the comments::

Well, at a certain point I agree with, Adonai. A baron should retain the wins a warlord should.

But, on Jonalyn's side, A baron earned the right for that to be one of his prizes. (No matter if his wins are 1+ WoL's or 1- WoL's) Being a baron gives you the right to have as many wins or losses as you have and still hold that title. The bad part is when ya lose the ring, you won't be a warlord. But, then again, maybe their skill also went down along with the title. Until someone challenges one of these duelists that have a record below 15
WoL's and wins, 14 WoL's or below will stand. No doubt.

One other thing,
To Adonai... As stated above, maybe some of their skills have been lost or they're just in a slump. I understand it, many go into a slump I should think. You may be a great duelist to maintain the rank of a warlord (though you're a baron) though what if some of the barons just don't have that spark to keep up anymore? They can't just say, ' Hey! Adonai's right!' and hop right back up into the 15 or above WoL's spot. Sorry, it just doesn't work
that way. I doubt your post will do much. It will either make it worse... absolutely nothing... or something better. But to make it better you must dig yourself out of a slump. That's the problem.

To all,

Shannon Colton was a very esteemed dueler in the Duel of Fists. She was very pertinent about honor in the Outback and she expressed it greatly through her words, letters, and posts.
Before every Diamond Quest in the Outback, she would posts a note reminding all of the Emeralds, Opals, and Diamond about dueling in the Diamond Quest. Her letters reminded all of the high rankers to think of the last time they dueled in the Outback and how it was respectful to duel even once or twice every one to three weeks. Just one, not a bad thing to ask... No one - not even Jonalyn - would comment on her letters. Not like there's anything
wrong with Jona! (Love ya, Jonalyn!)
For one, I respect Adonai's comments. I don't think it was harsh to remind barons of their standings. If I was a baron and fell below the 15 wins over losses standing, I would consider my ranking deeply.

Respectfully,

All:

Baron Uziel's point does, indeed have merit, when read without assumptions.

Regarding Ford Prefect, while it is certainly true that his record suffered, it is equally true that he did, indeed, think of his status regularly, and in fact was talked out of retiring the position on more than one occasion. His reasons were not self-pity, or a cry for attention, but a genuine concern that he was setting a poor example.

Luckily for all, he did reconsider. Had he NOT cared about the example he set, he would have been a poor one; by remaining public, and facing his challenges in the manner which he did, he made a fine example.

In that, I would ask everyone to remember that it is not necessarily one's success that displays their courage, honor, and desire... but one's effort.

Adonai's right, if you cant be a warlord, you shouldnt be a baron. I mean, I was a baron once, now I'm just a GM; but I'm working my tail off to get back to warlord, and since I cant do it, I dont think I'm ready to be a baron. And by the way Jonalyn, you named probably two of my favorite people in your post, being Miss Jaycynda, and the noble Gaius Cassius Maxim. Find in fault in them, and please point it out.
Adonai suggests somthing intelligent and all you do is post a big ol' post thats full of your crap. Your post didnt even address the matter, all you did was assault people's honor and integrity. Maybe you should think a little more before you post such insulting words, such things make many enemies.

Sincerely, and with Respect,
Sir Leo Caius Cassius Pride

::reads over the post and its replies then pens a few questions::

Does a Baron's WoL record set da example fer our community, or do his or her actions?

Is da rank in its most basic form defined by its holder's record?

What would a retirement based on record teach our community?

::stops to answer his own questions::

A barons worth is in how he or she holds the ring. AJay comes ta mind when regarding dis issue. He was one of our best barons, if not da best ever, yet he only carried about 16 WoLs. It was not because he was unskilled but because he didn't duel as many times as da rest of us. I never judge another by his or her record, nor do I expect anyone ta judge me by mine.

Record isn't a requirement of da rank, nor does it ever define who is da "best" baron, if such a quality can exist in our council

Lastly, why would it be *honorable* fer a baron of low record ta retire? Ta set an example? What example would it set... "Get a high record or get out"? I don't really want us to convey such a message, so I can not support Adonai's request.

In closing, I recognize Adonai's concern fer both our community, and our barons, but if ya stop ta consider why barons are deemed good and bad, and what really defines da example dey set, it has *nothing* ta do with record. At least in my humble opinion...
