Old-timer History of Swords
From: eagleecore@aol.com (EagleEcore)
Date: 07 Apr 1999 13:56:22 EDT
After being told that I don't understand what the term "OLD-TIMER" means, I went digging through some of my old archives to find the Swords Standings released after my first weekend of dueling. Standings rarely came out every week back then so
this is about as accurate as I can be with the information. This was years before the Universal Terms of Challenge as we know them now came out and years before the Baron's Council was even formed. This was back in the day when a FANCY got you an ADVANTAGE regardless if it was successful or not. I've highlighted by various color codes those people who effected and made Swords history somehow. These are the people I watched and learned from by
their actions in and out of the rings when I was fresh and new to the ways of the rings and the duels.
Don't ever try and tell me what old-timer means if you weren't even there to understand those days. Sure you may have read the histories or heard from others a tale or two, but few can say they were actually there to witness, especially fewer that are still around today. This is the complete standings as posted back then, and as you can see, only five duelers are currently active. Five duelers on this Standings became Overlord. Five duelers on
this list became Barons, including three who were part of the original nine who started the Baron's Council, including myself. Twenty-five duelers on this list eventually became Warlords as well. And all the duelers highlighted especially the one duelers in green, were all regulars of the day to day duels. When we had a smaller basement and could only duel two nights a week with no Que Keepers, these people who are highlighted were the ones who
drank together, adventured together, and shared their everyday lives on RhyDin with each other on a regular constant basis.
This is History, it was these people who help the Swords environment grow and develop into some of the things today that many take for granted. Duelers since then have done much of the same and have had effect similarly as well. But this is the roots of this sport, and none could convince me otherwise. Swords history did not start with the Baron's Council or some other milestone along the way, they are but chapters of this sport's long road of
evolution into what it has become today. To me your all new school duelers unless your name is highlighted in RED, and regardless of what anyone says that is my view and considering my tenure here I can have whichever view I desire and treat others as I desire for I've put in my time and been apart of this community for longer then most.
If you want to know more about the history of Swords, buy me a drink one day when I am in the Arena and I would be glad to share it with you, because I've seen the majority of it with my own eyes by first hand witnessed account.

Unless I misread other's words, Ecore, they were saying your idea of "old timer" doesn't fit their cliche. Like Ian said, one is an old timer in relative time.
I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but that's what I've read.

Ecore:
Nobody cares. There is a difference between those who honor history as history and seek to impart that knowledge, and those who lean on that history as their only remaining reason for existence.
"Don't ever try and tell me what Old-Timer means if you weren't even there to understand those days." Do you ever choke on your elitist rhetoric? This, from the man who insists we disregard his own past?
Feh.
I was AT the original tourney of the nine, Ecore... you know, the tourney you barely made Warlord in time to enter? I wandered out not minutes before you got beheaded. So don't pretend your experience is any more valid than any other. The standings, while entertaining, don't mean a damned thing, and I find it absolutely frantic that DAYS after anyone's commented on this, you have to come here and drool all over the cork to bolster your position as
someone who ought to be important.

No, Var, what I am saying is that when it comes down to brass tacks, nobody really wants to hear from someone whose opinion is that we're all lesser than him just because he's been here forever.

Now THAT'S a blast WAAAAAAY into the past! I have never seen a lot of those people, and I wish I coulda been around back then. After all, the current "greats" all had horrible records back then, and I would have looked good.
So, we've seen the records, but what was the DoS itself like? Pass on a tale or two, for someone who never experienced Way Back When.

My interest is held. Tell me.

Personally I found the post to be of some interest. I might tend to disagree with the theory that length of time in the Arena is necessarily something that merits respect of itself. There have been people here longer than myself who I don't have much respect for and people who haven't been around as long as I have whom I respect a great deal.
As for what the term 'Old-Timer' means, that people would argue over it is silly. The term is completely subjective. The less time someone has spent here, the more likely they are to refer to anyone who has been here lionger than they as an Old Timer. It is only natural for Ecore to not see people who haven't been around as long as he as 'Old Timers'. Simply because he has been around for awhile. It isn't elitist, it is just that the term is
subjective. It depends almost entirely on the point of view of the person using it.
For us to make this a bone of contention makes some interesting statements about all of us. And because I am no better than anyone else, I will add my two cents on the matter.
And old timer is someone who has been here longer than me, and is still here. Not someone who returns occasionally or who keeps in touch, but who is still active on a regular basis. Thus Ian, Simini, Baphe, Ecore, Lupton, Jonalyn, etc. are old timers to me. Retirees who visit infrequently or no longer visit at all are not. Simply because they aren't here for the most part. If they came back, I would think of them as such.
Just another subjective definition for a subjective term. Enjoy.

Enjoy.

<< As for what the term 'Old-Timer' means, that people would argue over it is silly. The term is completely subjective.>>
Very true also about many pointless arguments. Silly because everyone has a valid viewpoint.
Quizxs Xysar Zzaasdp
I'll never consider myself an old-timer, because I'll never have been here longer than myself. Right now, I don't even feel comfortable deciding who's an old-timer, 'cause it's relative. Relative, like time and space. Time and space! Hence, if you're big, you're an old-timer!
Dang, I went and confused myself again.

"Nobody really wants to hear from someone whose opinion is that we're all lesser than him just because he's been here forever." AND "Nobody cares. There is a difference between those who honor history as history and seek to impart that knowledge, and those who lean on that history as their only remaining reason for existence." As Iain says.
I was waiting for your response MacKenzie for I knew you would shortly after I tacked this upon the corkboard. Because it was aimed specifically at people like you. People who think they are the old-timers who saw it all happen and pretend to be the authority of everything has ever happened in Swords. Well frankly your not, Iain. I've always respected you and your views though we
have not always agreed on many things. But I remember the days when you walked into the basement under the moniker alais of SnowKnight. You were brash and full of yourself then like you own the place, and over time as you became more apart of the dueling community you didn't change your attitude, but atleast it had alot more validity.
I DO NOT THINK LESSER OF PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT BEEN HERE AS LONG AS ME. Otherwise, I wouldn't like anyone here, except for maybe three people currently active. And I am trying to set the record straight of history and impart on others since there is very few left who where there to experience it, so that it can be shared with others. I don't need my past history to lean on for being my only reason to be here, if it was I wouldn't
have come back at all and just left myself where in history I would have been remembered.
I am here to duel. I am here to enjoy my time with what of my comrades are left. And if anyone is willing to listen I will tell of the past, not just my past, but of as much of the sport's past as I was there to witness with my own senses.
How many people here besides me and RC can say they witnessed the duel between Siera Red and Gondar for her freedom and the beginings of the Ward of Gondar? Or watched the first ever actual Overlord match between Me Monk and Falon? For those that don't know Gondar became Overlord simply because he was the first to reach Warlord and claimed it for himself. And when Me Monk challenged him for Overlord, being the second to reach Warlord, Gondar
forfieted it by not even showing up.
I am not asking or demanding respect from anyone, because frankly from the majority of fickle and fake people here its not worth sheep's dung. Just because you weren't there and you were not apart of it Iain, doesn't mean other people aren't interested in it. Swords didn't begin when you graced us with your presence MacKenzie, so get over it, cause frankly its getting old hearing you act like your the Father of Swords.

Ecore:
I have to say that your point was valid and interesting on the standings which you posted. It is not often that we -being the newer duelers- get a chance to look back and see what it truely was like before the Baron's council, etc.
The histories of DoS were always something that interested me greatly. I have spent hours listening to Jonalyn telling stories about how it was back then. Though, that old age has come and pasted, you are right to say that it is the roots from which this new age has spawned from. Now, if you will, would you please entertain a few questions for me?
(1) Was the boards always like this?
(2) How was the respectful nature back then?
and ...
(3) Could you write posts every so often about what happened over the years? The DoS histories only deal with Overlords and Barons. Those are just ranks ... not the foundation of DoS. It is the people whom come here to duel which makes up DoS's structure. Stories of those people and what they did during their stays is what I want to hear about. Jonalyn, Lupton, and a few others are welcome to comment as well.
Respectfully,

By the gods, you've now made me feel like a young pup after reading that standings list. I greatly appreciate it, for a scarce few things around here make me feel young.
Bless you,

Evan...
I'd love to hear about the old times... But I also like to hear about what's been going on lately. I like being told about how LC's been getting in trouble and Prin's making G handle all of the "stern, fatherly" stuff. I like hearing about the latest pranks my new friend Kira has been getting into with her young friends.
It's enjoyable to hear about the banter between friends during the duels.
We're making history every day... let's not forget that.
