Then Cas, they should un-slump before challenging for the Overlord Title. The requirements are 15 WoL's to be ranked a Warlord and then the necessary peer wins. I think that Baron's without the required 15 WoL's should have there rings revoked at a cycle change, with those rings being offered in a Tournament for those who can maintain the requirements for rank.

But, then to take it one step farther, I think that any Baron without the 15 WoL's should "not" be allowed to challenge for the Overlord Title before he gets his own house in order, so to speak. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, this is mine.

Cheers,

<< Overlord, Supreme Dueler of Swords, the one known to this community as the one who is the best of the current ilk of duelers. A Baron, who needs to earn nothing to qualify to challenge for Overlord, seeks to claim such a title, when if they were not a titled dueler
would not otherwise be challenge qualified. You are an embarassment to everything the titles of this sport were founded upon. Skill of the blade. The basics of this sport is that the
blade will rule the day and its the one who weilds that blade who makes a good leader or not.>>
Yes, the Overlord is supposed to be the best of the bunch... that's why he/she is challenged regularly!
You stated that "A Baron... needs to earn nothing to challenge for the rank of Overlord". If I'm not mistaken, the amassing of 10 wins against the upper class of duelists is required to even challenge for a barony. If one defeats 10 of these guys, and the Baron, and then keeps their title long enough to challenge, then he/she *EARNS* the right to challenge for the Overlordship without the need to gain peer wins... and definitely deserves that
right!
You also said, "If they were not a titled dueler (they) would not be...challenge qualified." That's basically saying "If you hadn't beaten at least 26 duelists, including a Baron, earning the right to challenge without needing Peer Wins, you couldn't challenge." You don't believe that a duelist's rights of their rank should be exercised? Do you think that since a duelist has lost non-title matches he/she should lose the rights of his/her title?
You said, that by not obeying your little Rules Of Illogical Honor, a duelist became "a disgrace to everything the titles were founded on. Skill of blade." If I'm not mistaken, titles are to be held by the best. So why hold a duelist from proving he/she is the best, by forbidding a perfectly reasonable challenge?
"...the one who weilds the blade...(makes) a good leader"... you're trying to keep someone's blade down... Where's the logic??

Well, according to a sourceof information I deem reliable as to the rules in the past, there was a time (before the Barons I believe) that an OL was required to have the record of a WL at the end of the cycle or lose their title. This information could be faulty, as my source has not been present here in body for several years. However, it would be interesting to know why this rule was changed, because it no longer appears anywhere in the rules
regarding the upper ranks.

I've been reading up on the responsibilities and privileges of the Overlord and all, though I'm probably out of line when I ask this, but--

Why not use the Test of Worthiness? I mean, I've heard all this gruff about how it shouldn't be used on barons, and how Mr. Montoya doesn't really believe in it, I think, but shouldn't it apply here? If the baron hasn't proved him, or her, self worthy in the past few months, I don't see what would be so wrong with it. Instead of having proved herself with her record or recent defenses, she could just prove herself with the Test.

I met Jaycy the other night and she's great and all, and I hope she's not mad at me for saying all this, but getting THE crown shouldn't be as easy as one lucky duel(or possibly two, against the same person of course) as in, you know, a couple months. Well, that's it. Good afternoon!

Changing the rules won't change the attitude that festered in the community and the rings. People will abuse the rules however they can regardless of who they are hurting in the process. I have never agreed with the formation of the Universal Terms of Challenge that came with the formation of the orginal Baron's Council.

That is simply because I beleive everyone should earn and defend their own titles without someone else getting involved. I recognize others don't share my view, but in my opinion that was the pivotal point of when attitudes started changing for the worse around here. Friends and comrades started schemeing behind each others backs just to manuever themselves to get a title. People started making alliances and Houses just to survive around here,
and it became an us versus them mentality.

The purity of the sport was raped when the Baron's Council was formed. Innocense was lost to a bitter heartbreak of a true love of the rings and the duel. It no longer became a place for warriors to prove their might, but a place where politicans could sharpen their manipulative skills.

Since the Baron's council former, more people have become Overlord from the rank of Baron then from the rank of Warlord. Those who become Overlord from the rank of Warlord rather then Baron, I have always held more respect for in terms of skill, motivation, and desire to prove themselves worthy. Not that some Barons who have become Overlord don't deserve the same respect, but you see people like Cris and Jaycy abusing their title priviledges to
get what they want regardless of the community and what they represent.

I don't think a Baron should lose their title just because they go into a slump, because that is rediculous. I do however, believe that if a Baron doesn't have atleast 15 WoLs they should be barred from challenging for Overlord, and as well be barred from letting an Overlord Interceede on their behalf. A Loyal Baron can challenge an Overlord if they fall below 15 WoLs, why not allow the Overlord appoint a champion to challenge a Baron without
the need for peer wins those who fall below 15 WoLs.

Warlords need 15 WoLs and 15 peer wins to challenge for Overlord, and 15 WoLs and 10 peer wins to challenge for Baron. A Baron needs nothing to challenge for Overlord but a whim. All to often I have watched people barely make Warlord and immediately challenge for baron, then try to leap frog to Overlord. They usually all fail, lose it all, and runaway in shame. In fact I beleive a Warlord should have 10 WoLs peer wins, not just 10 peer wins to
challenge, and same for having 15 WoLs peer wins. That's right, defeating 10 or 15 more of your peers then have defeated you for the current cycle. The number of challenges would go down and I am sure the quality of duels would go up.

As I stated before those not paying attention, WoLs doesn't make the dueler, however, having a respectable WoLs helps complete the picture of the dueler and the person who wishes to be a leader of the community. Atleast the way I see it.

Ecore, Val, Percy, and all:

Ya done struck ta nail on ta head I suppose. Mayhaps it be a good rule ta look inta, making ta Barons and OverLord maintain some type of record. BUT -

That rule nae exist now, and envoking a mythical rule, and then beating it inta ta Jaycy's face just make no sense. That rule nae exist when she issued challenge, and it will nae exist when she presses challange.

In short - stop trying ta persecute ta lass because of some version of "Ta way things AUGHT" ta be, and come join ta rest of us in ta way things are.

I don't know if anyone else is curious, but I'm just dying to know why Jaycy challenged.

Summer,

They were never rules because at one time it was thought as common sense that someone would not even think of embarassing themselves by making such a challenge when they have a record comparable to a GrandMaster when they want to be known as the Supreme Dueler of Swords.

That's my point, peoples attitudes have changed to the point where they don't even care about their dueler status, but rather about their political status. This is a sport of duelers, who win or lose and prove themselves as dueler thus. They prove themselves as people and leaders outside the ring.

Hell, why don't we just get rid of the actual duel all togehr at this point and just start voting for who should be Overlord and Barons. Its the direction we are heading in it seems to me.

I am not trying to perecute anyone. I have made no comment regarding Jaycy or her challenge on this board. Nor will I. Jaycy and I have talked privately about my feelings and hers and that is enough for me and I see no reason to share my feelings with the public. My friend has my loyalty, and I hope she feels she did her best whatever happens.
I made a comment about a past rule someone recently shared with me, and wondered what happened to it. As far as this challenge goes I have said nothing and won't say anymore.

Summer's eyes brighten as she reads the words: oh, the brilliant words of Ecore. She glances to Marcus as he sets yet another dreaded glass of milk next to her and mutters, "Now tha' Ecore be around for a bit. Methinks he know wha' he talkin' about."

Ecore,
That be a grand idea! Surely a position so important in ta community should be chosen with more weight given to ta charachter and mind, then to if they just happen ta be quick on their feet and be having an on night.

I support ya Ecore! I done say lets do away with this nonsense, and have nae OverLord Challenges. Let us as a communit, elect ta OverLord from ta bevy of Barons.

Oh, and Percy luv, there never be any harm in asking "Why." Ya be right about that.

In full support,

Marzan...

First of all, I wish to thank you for your words; to thank you for asking, especially in the manner you have.

You have asked first why I have challenged, and second what I plan to do to serve the community. To answer the first, I leave a copy of my letter of challenge to the Overlord.

To answer the second... first and foremost, I will be there. I will be in those rings, among the duelers within this sport, I will be there when they need a shoulder to lean on. I am dedicated to this sport, to these people. I will be there, through good and bad.

Second, it could be said if one isn't a Warlord in this sport today, it's pointless to be here. Regardless of rank, we're all equals, we're all united by the dance of blades, despite differences. Do you remember the last auction fundraiser? I sure do. Spring is here, people are beginning to get out more, to venture into the warmer air... to come together. I think it's time to do just that... don't you?

My last words are this. Above all else, I will do my best.

Simply,
Jaycy

------------------

Underneath her hand-written response is indeed a copy of her letter of challenge.

Overlord Condextint "Dexter" Montoya, Esteemed Officials of the Duel of Swords, Members of the Council, other concerned parties:

Six months ago today, Friday, April 9, I did press challenge to the former Holder of the Third Baronial Ring, Evan Rush Rynth, and did gain the right to bear the Third Ring of the Duel of Swords. In those last six months I have seen and learned many things, both about myself, and about the politics of the DoS.

People change over time.

I challenged those six months ago, believing one pretty much needed to be a title holder to make a difference, and that is what I wished to do. I learned fairly quickly I was wrong in that, but upon winning the Barony, I accepted a responsibility, a commitment to the community; and I was not about to back down from that. A title holder is so much more committed to the DoS community than any other rank. Warlords could retire at will, with nothing
lost. The Barons and the Overlord, however, when they retire, leave a gap. That, I simply could not do. So, I remained.

I entered the position with certain views.

One of those was regarding the subject of intercession. I have never believed in intercession for a Baron's first defense. I believed when one was personally insulted, or when ones' personal honor was in question, the Baron should meet that slight within the ring, themselves, to uphold that honor. I believed there were instances when intercession was needed. Those beliefs have changed. I do not believe in intercession, for any reason. I do
believe a man ( or woman ) forges their path on their own, and while they should have the support of their friends, it is only that person who can walk the path they forge.

I believed a Baron should keep their Win over Loss record at the requisites for Warlord. I believed if a title holder could not keep that record, they should be challenged until they are either removed from the Barony or get the needed wins over losses. I still do believe that. I perhaps know better than many how people can get in a slump and fall under. I can understand how it must look to those we are expected to be examples to. I know of my
own record, and I have asked people to challenge me, due to that. I have tried to rectify it, and while I am disappointed in myself, I do believe that trying is the most important part.

I believed the Loyalty of a man or woman was sacred, and a very serious matter. I still do. My loyalty is not given easily, nor will it ever be, yet when it is, I will not turn my back on that.

I believed a title holder should be around in DoS, a public figure. They are perhaps, aside from the officials, the most public of all. I never have condoned absenteeism among the title holders, for the level of commitment to the DoS is so high.

M'lord Montoya, I do not know you, thus I cannot give my loyalty to you. While I am sure you are a fine man, I feel I must press challenge. You had not dueled since the beginning of January, even after you issued challenge to the former Overlord, Cristian de Oro. While I give you all due respect as a person, and as the Overlord, this concerns me greatly, and thus I issue this challenge, on this day.

Sincerely,
Jaycynda Ashleana
Holder of the Third Baronial Ring

Can we all just get over this...Jaycy challenged and their is nothing anyone can do to stop it. If you got a problem with it, challenge her if she wins. Other than that, crying over it won't get you a thing. The only thing it'll get you is more eniemes.

Hmm. If, indeed, that is your belief, then what would you suggest to a baron that has not been removed or does not have the needed wins over losses? Challenge the OL?

Curiously,

I beg to differ. One could ask to be the Overlord's champion, and thus stop the challenge by defeating Jaycy in a Test of Worthiness.
