Preperations for the Overlord Match

It was quickly approaching. It was probably the most important night of her career, and it was happening all too fast. It... was the night of her challenge to the Thirty-first Overlord, Dexter Montoya. For some time she had been watching... learning. She had listened to the traditions, the histories; she took it all in, and eagerly. It felt kind of weird, to the gypsy, to actually be a part of that
history, for good or bad. Six and a half months she had been a title holder, six and a half months of getting used to being called "Baroness." Her nose wrinkled a bit at that... for so long she had been knows to everyone as Jaycy, and she missed that, in a way.
"Please, just Jaycy," she mocked. Realizing how utterly silly she sounded, she began to chuckle. "Gah, " she spoke aloud after a time, "what's happened to me? Politics, bah. Authority, bah. Titles, bah! When did life stop being so simple?" She mused on that question for a moment, then smiled as she answered herself. "When I fell in love." Oh yes, she fell in love with the Duel of Swords; she fell in love with the people, with the sport.
Jaycy knew some might disagree, but let them. She knew her heart and those who truly knew her knew that as well.
She stood suddenly; she had been sitting behind the desk in her office. Pushing the chair from her path, she padded to the door. She... had a plan.

Her mind racing as her plan began to take shape, she frowned a minute before setting pen to paper. This was something she would need help on, and she figured she knew just who to ask. Jaycy wrote swiftly, offering as much detail as she could on the idea, even though it wasn't complete. Calling to an elemental courier, the note was passed off and on its way.
Not long after, Jaycy had her answer, and it was, of course, an affirmative. She grinned, not only happy to have such a good friend, but a wily partner in crime. For the second time that day she penned a note, this one being one of thanks and naming a meeting place and time.
She didn't have much time at all for plotting; her children kept coming in the office for quite literally nothing at all. It was almost as if they knew something was going on; but that wouldn't exactly be surprising. Some have asked the question, "When is Jaycy *not* up to something?" It surely seemed she always was, I guess.
Her eyes were bright with excitement as the time to meet her cohort came. Almost running, Jaycy left the office and made her way to the little-known tavern in RhyDin.
"Collie!" she exclaimed with a grin as she caught sight of her friend. "It's time again, m'lady, are ya ready?" She offered the older lady a seat as she waited for Collie's reply.

The two ladies talked for some time, sketching out the plan as they had a light supper. It was decided Collie would gather all the needed supplies and add the finishing magickal touches, while Jaycy would do most of the real work. It only seemed fair, really.
They spent the next few days meeting frequently, hiding the various needed items around RhyDin, close to the Arena and Annex. Challenge night was drawing ever closer, and the two knew they didn't have much time to accomplish what they wished; but they did their best.
The day before challenge night, Wednesday, Jaycy spent much of her time holed in the cavern, pouring the various colored wax into molds for the candles. It was boring, tedious work, but she was actually enjoying the mundane task. She even had a chance to get the girls involved, and they chattered happily about the upcoming event. If Neris agreed, they would be allowed to go, this time.
The day passed quickly, and they finished a little before sunset. But the day was not over yet. Jaycy still had one other task to complete before slipping off to bed and her haunted dreams. She had to put the finishing touches on her outfit. She had always worn the colors of HDT with her family colors for challenges; not this time. For this challenge she would remain in silk, with a gypsy style, but would duel in basic black. This time she
would honor no House, would hold no preference. This time... was a time of remembrance for the former Overlords of the Sport, and for each House founded within the Duel of Swords.
Jaycy completed the finishing touches, and after gently setting her outfit on the couch, fell into bed and into a deep sleep.

Muttering, Jaycy woke with the dawn of the Spring Thursday morning. Neris was already gone, and she frowned. She could only hope he would be there tonight; he did promise. But in his line of work, who knew? With a sigh she threw back the covers and climbed out of bed. Ugh, she thought, it's way too early. Ah well, anything important involved sacrifice. Dressing quickly, she left the house and made
her way to the office, where she met Collie.
The two ladies exchanged tired greetings and made their way to their cache of supplies. Upon gathering them all, they slipped into the Arena, and through it, to the Annex. Jaycy carefully set the glass items down on a nearby table, looking around while listening to Collie, who was telling her the flowers would arrive a short while later. Jaycy nodded and got to work.
Quickly the gypsy went around the Annex, first covering every table with a white silk tablecloth. Next, she gathered dozens of candleholders, placing two on the center of each table. A third pass around the Annex consisted of filling each candleholder with taper candles, each a different color.
The color combinations for each table were meant to represent a different House within DoS past or present, or a tribute to a well-known personage within the rings. One table held the crimson and gold colors to remember the great lady Siera Redwin; another table with crimson and gold candles was representative of House Oakenshield. Questrion's black and silver graced another table; and Lathadoscia's purple and gold stood on a fourth table. House
Dragoon-Talanador's table held the midnight blue and shadow grey candles. Atrebla held one of the largest tables in the Annex, its candles black and jade. There was a table set in deference to Xenograg and Amaltea; and one for Kalamere. One for Gondar stood near the rings; and the next table was for Athlstan.
All those of the rings, past and present, were remembered with the candles. Stepping back to the stairs, Jaycy looked to Collie for approval, who smiled. Only one real thing was left to be done; and so they sat to wait for the flowers.

Finally, they arrived. Chuckling, Jaycy joked about them taking forever and a day to come, and Collie grinned, agreeing. The last stage of their work was easy and finished quickly.
Jaycy and Collie went to each table, matching the colors of the candles with two long stem roses, forming an "X" on the table, crossed at the middle of the stem. The candleholders were then moved close to the cross in the middle of the table. For the colored roses that weren't exactly matched, magick was worked subtly, merely shifting the color.
Looking around, they made sure the tables were finished before decorating the very last thing. On the banister of the steps leading from the Arena, they put up climbing ivy, also decorating the length of the bar with the pretty green plant. Woven into the ivy were white roses; white being a neutral color, and one of purity, a new chance.
As they finished, they stood at the landing, and Collie worked one more spell... one of holding, so the decorations would remain undisturbed for the day. Smiling, Jaycy turned to her friend, and with a deep bow, offered a single white rose, her wordless thanks. The elder lady took it with a smile, and they made their way from the Annex.
With that, they separated and Jaycy returned again to her home, and her bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she was asleep; she had a big night ahead.

His Captain had sent him to the blasted basement in a god forsaken cave beneath a perfectly good tavern to check things out for her, she would be attending the challenge and wanted no unforseen surprises. He took Jak with him, the mastiff was good company(surprisingly so) and Donal as well for that added air of brute force.
Gregor was not fond of dark places, his home was on the open ocean, with the balmly breezes cleansing his hair with each step. The Duelers Arena part of the cavern had never been a problem with him, but he had to go deeper into the twisted caves to reach what they considered the "Basement". It was good that he had company, it prodded his pride to help him keep placing one foot in front of the other.
When they made that last turn to reach the place Gregor was struck with some god awful stench.
"Bloody 'ell. What is this a bloody ladies tea party?", Gregor's voice boomed throughout the hall, a grunt of agreement came from Donal as the man covered his nose.
"This will not do, the Captain will choke before long.", he looked around at the garrish display.
"As any man would do.", Donal laughed heartily at his joke. He had a good rapport with Ellisa and they oft times said she was more a man than he, though he stood a good and solid few inches above six feet.
Gregor nodded as he caught a glimpse of one of those young serving rats that infested the hall, not that he didn't like them he just didn't understand why any man would live as they do.
"YOU!", he nearly chuckled as the boy nearly looked to leap out of his skin from the shock of the shout. "Come 'ere! You remember me, yes?".
Even if the boy didn't he nodded his head quickly enough taking in the sight of two large(somewhat seedy looking) fellows with a rather large dog. Gregor pressed on anyway, "This is supposed to be a place for a bloody duel, not a bloody tea party with crumpets and ladies. Do I look like a lady to you?!".
The boy shook his head and mumbled something, Gregor was pretty sure it was an insult but he found that amusing rather than anything else.
"Good, then clean up these posies, give 'em to some ladies up the stairs, they will love you for it.", Gregor chuckled at the gleam that brought to the boy's eyes.
"B-but the ladies that brought them here, they want--", the boy tried to save himself from all angles and Gregor couldn't fault him for that.
"You tell them that Captain Ellisa Morgan can not stand the stench of posies and they can take it up with 'er if they feel it a necessity.", he thought for a moment, "Keep the ones on the table, but get rid of all else, yes?".
Gregor glared, Donal glared, Jak growled and the boy complied. "Oh, yes sir. It'll be done in a flash."
"Good enough.", Gregor chuckled again as he tossed the boy a few gold(for which the boy seemed pleased enough) and turned to leave. "I want out of this bloody hole in the ground. Donal stay to make sure the job is finished then meet me upstairs for a proper ale."
Donal nodded with a grin as Gregor moved swiftly from the place with Jak lopping by his side, anxious for the deed to be done to collect on the ale.

She had spent the morn at the Starfare Manor House completing the necessary preparations. She climbed the stairs to the main floor. She gave a nod to Bartholomew as the elderly majo domo held her cloak. Slipping the cloak over her shoulder, the old man assured her he would see that the cooks would have a late dinner prepared for her return.
Sighting on her destination, she appeared in the tunnel entrance leading into the annex. "Bluidy 'ell.", she murmured as her gaze took in the decorations. The tell tale shimmer of a magical signature seemed to blaze before her adept eyes. She glanced to Al, Hubie and Marcus as she wandered among the tables. The two older boys' faces expressed their consternation as they tugged and yanked at the flowers. Marcus piped up, "Ma'am, we didn't do
it!"
She caught sight of Donal. She didn't know the man, giving him a quick if wry smile, and a nod of greeting, "Sir." Al quickly spoke up, "Ma'am, Captain Morgan, well, you know, she can't stand...", the teenager stammered, "These men....we're doing our best, Ma'am, but, but, well, the ivy and roses...we can't budge them!!"
She lifted on raven brow as she took in the ivy and roses on the railing and along the bar, "Bluidy place looks like a bleedin' bordello!" As she glanced around the tables, she gave a shrug, recognizing the various color schemes. "Och, lads, th' be a spell at work here."
She glanced around to Donal, giving him another wry grin, "Well met ta thee, sir, me name be Jonalyn Starfare. Mind yuir eyes, aye?"
A moment of concentration, her sea blue eyes narrowed slightly. She pondered simply using a bit of pyrokinetics to turn the ivy and roses on the railings and the bar to ashes. That would have left a mess on the stairs and on the bar. "Och jus' git bleedin' ashes in th' drinks, an' someone might slip 'pon th' stairs." A slight gesture of her fingers, a soft murmured word, she chose the simplest expedient. Slowly the ivy and the roses draped on
the railings and the bar faded from view. She sniffed, "Och, th' bluidy smell remains. Al 'it th' switch o'er th' bar." The teenager leaped over the bar. Marcus giggled, "You could have walked around, showoff!" Hubie snickered. Al flipped the switch. The soft whirring of the fans began. The ventilation system made short work of most of the odors. The minor spell of holding would eventually expire as would that of invisibility. For the
moment, the ivy and flowers on the railing and the bar would remain unseen, the scent drawn out through the vast ventilation system.
She gave a sassy wink to Donal, turned and vanished in a soft azure shimmer. Al and Hubie exchanged looks. "We're off the hook." Marcus grinned impishly as he set about tucking betting slips next to the candles on the tables.

Preparing
He had watched the manor house for the better part of a day. His employer had given him the means to track his elusive quarry, provided he did not make the mistake of getting too close with the device. And so it was that he knew when she left the house as she so often did.
He knew where she was going. It had been the topic of more than one conversation he had overheard. She had gone to the sub-basement of the Red Dragon Inn, where the titular Overlord would defend his right to retain his title. And so, he walked from the small building he had been using. He mounted his Morgan stallion and rode off toward the center of Rhy'Din Town.
After seeing that his steed was tended in the stables near the Inn, he walked to the back door of the Inn. After slipping silently and unnoticed into the Inn, he stepped to the door to the basements. He walked quietly down the stairs, and to the door of the sub-basement.
He walked to the end of the tunnel. His cloak wrapped around him, hiding him perfectly in the gloom of the basement. He watched as the servants saw to the decorations, his eyes searching the shadowed areas of the room as he searched out his best route of entry and, ultimately, escape.
