Overlord Rings
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 07 Apr 1999 22:12:05 EDT
Simini sat hunched over a small wooden desk, her smallish features drawn into a serious look of concentration. A single candle lit the room, and the only sound was the scratch of quill on parchment.
There, it was done. She finally had a sketch she was happy with. This was to be the design for the Overlord Rings. She held the parchment up for one more look, just to be sure.
The platinum band was sheer and smooth, except for two designs, one on each side of the stone. The design on the left was the symbol of the Duel of Swords, two thin blades crossing. On the right, the drawing was left blank - this was to be where the individual Overlord's emblem or crest would be created. Beneath the stone, so that one had to look through the stone to see it, was the Crown of the Overlordship. The color of the stone would vary by
Overlord. Above it would be written the ordinal of the Overlord's reign, and below it would be the word "Overlord".
She nodded. Valmion would be well pleased, she thought.

Gondar
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 07 Apr 1999 22:14:02 EDT
"Just start with Gondar," Valmion had said with a wave of his hand... as if it were that easy.
It had been some time since she'd worked jewelry, and she wanted to get this perfect. With a start, she realized that the last time she'd worked anything other than tools was the day she had forged Melagarian for Aspendale. She paused a moment to trace the twin hairline scars on her left palm; barely visible now, they were the only traces of the blood she'd shed for that sword, giving it both its reddish tinge and its name.
Back to the ring. Gondar. The man for whom so much of the sport had been named; the first Overlord, the man who started it all... not because he was the first to earn it, but because he was the first to step up and take it for himself. Simini scowled slightly as she worked. A shame... and an irony... that the first Overlord of the Duel of Swords was really an egomaniac who had no real love for the sport at all.
She set the ring with a diamond, since Gondar's colors had been silver and black. She carefully inscribed the word "First" over the stone, and "Overlord" below it.
Now, the hard part. She stared at the blank space to the right of the stone for a long while. Gondar had had no crest - what was she going to put there? She considered a thundercloud... black, with a silver lightning bolt darting out. It seemed appropriate... a strong, overpowering force of nature that affected everything below it without regard. But somehow, she felt that Gondar had had no symbol for a reason - he didn't need one, he was Gondar.
In the end, she left the space blank... itself a symbol of Gondar's egotistical superiority and aloof disinterest in the sport itself.
The next morning, she saddled Inanna to make the trek to Questrion.

Me Monk
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 14 Apr 1999 23:07:21 EDT
Valmion had expressed his approval wholeheartedly, and Sim was back at work in her cottage.
Monk. Druid of the Grove, Defender of the Weasel, and Guardian of Ancient Times. Monk earned the Crown without defeating Gondar, instead ascending to the title when the First Overlord did not deign to appear at his own Challenge Match. The forfeit seemed to elevate Monk to a different kind of honor than that Gondar had enjoyed; something respectful of the man as well as the title. Simini wondered idly what would happen if the situation were repeated
in today's atmosphere.
Indeed, the Second Overlord had always commanded Simini's respect, not for his honorariums or age, but for his quietly sportive manner, and deceivingly aggressive dueling style. And something about duelers with staves always made her look twice.
A raised platinum image of the druid's staff went into the space to the right of the stone, with a thread of red twisting around the image of polished wood. This time, the stone was a red-flecked labradorite, and the word "Second" was written above it.
She smiled. This ring, she hoped, would actually be worn by the one who earned it.

Falon Femorbrook
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 23 Apr 1999 21:14:05 EDT
Two images always sprang into her mind whenever Simini thought of the Third Overlord. One was of the Nexus of the Mystic Keep appearing in the basement in a flash, the Sword of Life glowing high above his head. The man of few words but many grand moments; the man who rarely deigned to speak to the commoner Simini in public.
The other was of Mr. Femorbrook, the man that made her negotiate with his lawyers before consenting to an interview for Simini's Swords. Once the terms were negotiated, however, it had been a pleasant interview in the south garden of Lodiel. Falon's captivating blue-green eyes and charmingly calm demeanor were uncharacteristic of his usual behavior in the Arena... nae, they were downright flirtatious.
Lodiel was very nearly the most beautiful place Simini had ever seen. Gardens and ponds were unobtrusively circled by low blackstone walls and meadows. The estate had once belonged to Fantasy234, RC's wife. When the marriage broke up, she and Falon had grown close, despite the fact that she was carrying RC's child. The woman died giving birth, and Falon had sworn to raise her son. The boy was named Arterius, and Falon stayed at Lodiel as Guardian.
The interview had taken place during Siera's reign as Overlord. Feadur had proclaimed himself Siera's Champion, and Falon had taken great exception to this practice, protesting with a self-imposed exile that had sparked great debate. In fact, the interview with Falon was one of her favorites - besides the hot topic, it was the only time that a subject had managed to twist things around and become the interviewer instead of interviewee.
Simini worked on Falon's ring early one morning, before doing the milking. It was a peaceful time of day, and Sim found that she often completed much work when she started early. Indeed, the Sword of Life nearly carved itself into the side of the ring, and the task was completed much earlier than she had anticipated.
Perhaps most of all, Simini remembered something Falon had said at the end of their interview. It was a simple statement of personal philosophy, but one that Simini had eventually arrived at for herself, years later. "I don't dabble in politics. I'm a duelist."
She wondered where Mr. Femorbrook was now.

Xenograg kathu-Darelir
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 30 Apr 1999 21:10:00 EDT
For the first time, Simini faced personal emotion as she set about crafting an Overlord's Ring. Xeno had taught her a little about the Rings, and a little about magic, but he was more than a mentor, more than a teacher, more than... all of that. He was a father figure for her; they had history together.
She colored the background of the right side of the ring with aventurine. Her full lips tugged into a slight smile recalling the jeweler's befuddled look when she'd asked for but a thin slice of the mica inside the gem. He didn't seem to think a woman capable of crafting anything that delicate; but with Valmion's letter of credit, he'd simply given her what she'd asked for - albeit without bothering to hide his look of skeptical trepidation.
Etching the black Darelir sigil into the yellow stone proved a simple task; the X had but two "rocking chair" ends on it.
Getting the ordinals to fit, however, was another matter. She worked carefully, thin copper brows reaching for each other in concentration as she created the words "Fourth, Sixth and Fifteenth" in two lines from the platinum above the yellow tourmaline stone. Squinting at the letters, she hoped he wouldn't think them too small to see.
When she finished, she set the ring aside and moved to her desk to pen a letter to Xeno. It had been some weeks since she had spoken to him, and crafting the ring had incited a wish to contact him, and ask after the well-being of his family after their recent tragedy.

Juan Sanches Villalobos Ramirez
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 13 May 1999 15:51:08 EDT
Frustrated, she began.
Although she'd met the Fifth Overlord, she had not known him well, and securing the details she needed to create his ring had proven almost fruitless. Her own memories included nothing more than the fact that Ramirez had been a flirt and that, despite his name, he claimed to be Egyptian... and that he had had some part in the training of Siera Redwin and her Swordbrother, the dark elf Feadur.
With Jonalyn's help, she'd managed to secure a record of Ramirez' duel with FantasyRC, when RC Challenged Ramirez for the Overlordship. However, whomever had made the record had been so busy recording the details of what was said that night, that no descriptions were included... not even one of Ramirez' weapon.
She engraved a picture of a nondescript sword into the right side of the platinum band, sending a silent prayer to the Goddess that Ramirez had even fought with a sword. The stone stayed a clear diamond, and the word "Fifth" looked magnificent above it.
With a sigh, she set the ring aside, hoping it would do.

Stefano de Fortenza
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 16 Jun 1999 22:59:21 EDT
Prince Stefano de Fortenza had been just "Stephen" to her; the man with an elaborate vocabulary and magnificent dueling style; his incongruous cape threadbare and tattered about the edges. And an odd cape it was - there were some days when Sim was sure it had taken on a life of its own.
She chuckled softly, turning the metal over in her hand as she worked.
One of her fondest memories of Stephen was the day they had spent shopping together in the Marketplace. They'd run into Kalamere, and it had turned into quite an adventure - Simini trying vainly to keep those two in line as they made her try on silly clothes, flirted with women, and stole apples from the poor fruit vendor. The best part of the afternoon, however, was when they'd reached Larana's Love Loft. Sim had managed to convince both men to go
in with her, but only she and Kal made it out. Stephen was last seen... a little tied up.
Another of her favorite memories of her fiery friend was the interview she'd done with him for Simini's Swords. He'd taken her to the grove where he'd entered this realm from the Plane of Fire... the trees still bore scorched scars, and the smell of burnt wood was strong.
Her quiet thoughts were brought to a stop when she realized her work was finished. The ring had practically fashioned itself. A stream of fire from the weapon's hilt was edged with red, thorn-like protrusions of tiny flames, and the word "Seventh" was written above the fiery stone in her thin script.

The Doctor, Ulath Fici, Vernick
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 27 Jul 1999 23:35:25 EDT
The Doctor's ring sat beside her on a wooden shelf, newly finished with the basic blade pattern she'd come to use as a backup when the former Overlord's weapon was unknown. The workmanship on that ring was fine, but her mind was distracted by the next ring she was to do - Ulath's.
Ulath. What mixed feelings the name aroused. At first, a second of a smile, recalling the charming flirt she'd come to know... quickly replaced by a frown of annoyance, and possibly even anger. The man had disappeared, creating a scandal Simini was forced to deal with. Then, when she set out to find him, to tell him her secret... well, she almost hadn't survived the trip, and to find out that he later reappeared without an apparent care in the world
was galling. Was he dead? Did she care?
Her fingers flew angrily over the polished metal. She had to remind herself to care; that it was just as important that this ring be up to standard as any other. Besides, she assumed, Jola would probably be the eventual recipient of this ring; she wanted to at least show respect for her friend, the woman Ulath really loved.
So it was with haste she put on the finishing touches; a quick polish of the onyx stone and the words "Ninth Overlord" before setting the ring aside, next to The Doctor's.
Not wanting Ulath to linger on her mind, she decided to move straight on to the Tenth Overlord - Vernick. This was the last Overlord reign Simini herself did not witness any part of. Indeed, when the fresh-faced girl from the RhyDin countryside took her first steps into the basement Arena, the scandal surrounding Vernick and his wife was just settling down...
Lady Beth was the victim of serious insult, and Vernick eventually felt compelled to retire his Overlordship as a result of - or mayhaps more correctly, in protest of - the ensuing scandal. He was the first Overlord to retire, and in Simini's opinion, the first of two, despite what the official histories will say.
A moment later, Vernick's ring joined the others with a softly metallic clink.

Amaltea thu-Darelir of Barsi
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 07 Nov 1999 16:22:52 EST
It had been some time since Simini had been able to work upon the Overlord Rings. She hoped Valmion would not be too upset with her - although, after all, he had not set a deadline upon her. All the same, once she found herself with some time, she worked quickly by the light of the fire. Who was next? she thought to herself - and smiled when the answer came to her.
Lady Amaltea thu-Darelir of Barsi, her quick wit almost as sharp as her blade. Tarillion was its name, a gift from her husband, Xenograg. It carried silver in its steel, and Simini had seen it used effectively against more than one demon.
Amal was a woman with the unique ability to be a proper noblewoman and still imbibe any situation with a sense of gaiety. Or... downright raunchiness - Amal's bacchanals were well known, indeed. Slowly, the Barsi Coat of Arms was etched beside the clear yellow stone, with "Eleventh Overlord" above and below.

resumption of a commission
From: simini@aol.com (Simini)
Date: 01 Apr 2000 23:01:34 EST
Simini lifted the dropcloth from her worktable and blew on it; dust motes exploded in a cloud of negligence, and she scowled inwardly. It was not like her to abandon a project, but she had felt at the time that what she was doing with Fantasy RC was more important; more beneficial to the sport.
Alas, that had not worked out, and now she was very behind on her promise to Valmion. True, no deadline had been required, but she still felt guilty.
When her workspace was sufficiently clean and proper once again, she was surrounded by bands of smooth platinum and small tools. Near her left elbow sat a lumpy black pouch of gemstones; at her right, a single tallow candle burned steadily.
She settled down to her task.

Vixxenish

Vixxenish. Hers had been the first Overlord match Sim had actually attended, but what she remembered most about the woman was how she had had the entire Arena decorated in fuschia polka dots for the duration of her reign. An odd color, that, and the closest Sim could find to emulate it was a deeply colored pink quartz. It would have to do... somehow, she thought Vixx wouldn't mind at all.
The memory of the former Overlord's weapon illicited a low chuckle; she had called it a "chain saw," but somehow Simini did not think she could etch one of those into the quartz! She thought it wisest simple to leave that side of the platinum smooth; the crossed swords on the other side was sufficient.

Valmion

Valmion, Lord of Questrion. Simini chuckled softly as she worked, and slowed her pace a bit while working on this ring - Valmion, after all, was the one who had commissioned her to create these rings. She closed her eyes for a moment, getting an exact picture of the Sword of Imperators in her mind's eye and holding it there for a moment before continuing to work. She chose a clear blue sapphire, the
closest blue she could find to approximate the blue flame of Anquar Magic that the Sword of Imperators would occasionally ignite in.
Beside the stone was etched the symbol of Questrion, a silver griffon upon a field of black. Lastly, the word "Thirteenth" was carved above the sapphire.

Kalamere

(( Author's Note: Please consider this scene - and all subsequent non-Max posts regarding the making of the Overlord Rings - to have taken place AFTER the scene with Max currently being posted in the "Wun Ryng tu Rool Them Awl" thread. ))
The smell of fresh hay and horses was nearly as strong as the lilac in her arms as Simini stepped into the barn. She breathed deeply, and even caught a scent of the few roses that were blooming already. White roses were a serious weakness of hers; she had several varieties nearly covering the property near the cottage.
Slanted rays of early morning sun pointed the way to the little work area she had cleared for herself in a corner of the tack room. It took only a moment to arrange the lilac in a bowl of water and settle upon the rickety stool to work. This ring would be easy, for she knew its eventual owner well, and had crafted things for him before. She had known him once, anyway, as well as he allowed, for Kalamere Ar'Din was a man of secrets, indeed.
She'd loved him once, although looking through the eyes of hindsight she could see what a girl she truly had been. At the time, she'd refused to admit that the man saw her as a younger sibling, someone to chide a little and protect a lot, and find a suitable match for. That thought brought a snorted chuckle, recalling that it had been Stephen Kal had "chosen" for her.
Once, she thought she had finally convinced him she was not a little sister... that thought had lasted about as long as her temper did where he was concerned. Another smile flickered across full lips beaded with sweat as she worked. Ach, did she ever lose her temper with Kal! No wonder he thought her a child! Remembering an episode with Najiba brought the smile short, though. That had not been an enjoyable evening at all; she brushed past the memory.
Still, her time with Kalamere had been memorable. Even as an "older brother" he had shown her things and taken her places she never would have seen or experienced otherwise. And, thanks to him, her smooth cheeks held no trace of the slashing wound she had received from Quevven. Hopefully, her small part in "rescuing" him from his "family" had been sufficient payment for his Healing magick. She wondered about that; wondered if he remembered, wondered
why his work kept him so busy that he rarely visited the Arena now, and wondered if he still lived behind those impenetrable walls.
Indeed, the hawk she raised in the ring's platinum band next to the sapphire seemed to her to be Kal himself, lifting off into a solo flight to an unknown - and perhaps nonexistent - destination.
