A cold wind blows.

The rider was perhaps fifty miles north of RhyDin town with dusk settling in about him. The large black stallion snorted beneath him as he made his way down the road, the light of an inn catching his attention.

"Ah boy, just what we needed," the rider said, reaching down and patting the neck of the large mount he rode. He then let out an unusal and somewhat dark laugh and reigned the horse forward at a quicker pace.

He noted four large mounts tied off outside the front of the inn as he dismounted and glanced up at the sign hanging above the entrance. The Passing Patron it read and the rider just laughed again, wrapping the reigns of the stallion around a tree.

"How quaint", he said softly as he looked around once more, then moved to where the four horses were tied off. He quickly looked through the saddlebags of the first one and noted a few items that gave him the information he was looking for.

"Soldiers, this should be interesting," he said quietly, reaching down and unfastening a leather strap that was wrapped around the hilt of the bastard sword sheathed at his side. He then made his way to the front door of the inn, stepping up the three wooden steps that stood between him and the unexpected terror those inside were about to encounter.

He kicked the door in, the large black leather boot making a resounding thud against the oak that exploded from the impact. As the door flew in, the black mailed warrior followed, unsheathing the ebon bastard sword from his side with an evil hiss. Inside a barmaid let out a shrill scream as the door was kicked in and the cold wind whipped around the tavern extinguishing a few lanterns.

Four soldiers at one table immediatly stood, unsheathing the swords at their sides. The barkeep reached under the bar and pulled a crossbow out and began to cock it. A family that had just sat down to dinner was sitting in stunned silence, the mother reaching for her two girls and the father saying to himself, "What the hell".

The dagger sailed through the air and caught the barkeep in the throat, knocking him back against a rack of glasses. The rack came tumbling down on top of him as the black mailed warrior moved, putting an empty table between him and the four soldiers making their way towards him. They had split into pairs, two moving left of the table, two moving right.

"Mommy", one of the two girls screamed, tearing herself from her mothers arms and moving back behind one of the four oak pillars that supported the ceiling overhead. Her mother looked to the girls father who was sitting in pale faced terror at the table, frozen as he watched the last few minutes of his life pass before him.

"Homer, do something!", his wife screamed, standing with the other daughter and looking to the door. Still the husband sat frozen at the table, unable to move as his fears engulfed him, the events that unfolded before him happening in a blur.

As the black mailed warrior reached the table he grabed a chair with his free hand and charged to the two soldiers on his right. They quickly moved in a defensive posture, their military training keeping them focused. The chair came flying, causing one to duck or take it square in the face and as he rose again he saw his friends head cross his vision. His life was taken a moment later as the bastard sword pierced his heart as it passed completely
through him.

The girl behind the pillar screamed once more and the mother made a bolt for the door, letting go of her daughters hand, just hoping to god she would follow. The other two soldiers were backing up, as they had never seen a man move as fast as this one.

"He must be a demon," one of them said, the other finding his back against the bar. A second dagger flew across the room catching the mother in the temple as she was about to make the door. He body just collapsed into a heep in front of the door, causing the younger daughter who was following to fall to her knees crying.

The warrior kicked the soldier free of his blade and turned to the two at the bar, the scene before him bringing a delightful smile to his face. He then advanced on the two soldiers, their swords held unsure before them now.

Behind the bar, the woman who first screamed when the black mailed warrior entered, was huddling down, praying to god he had not noticed her. The two daughters were crying so hard they were lost to the events. Old Homer still sat frozen in his chair, his money and influence doing nothing to protect him at the moment.

"Pitiful," the warrior said as he cut and arc with the bastard sword, relieving yet another soldier of his head as he spun around and kicked the other one over the bar and into broken mass on the other side. The barmaid screamed again as the soldier came flying over and landing in front of her.

The warrior reached over the bar and grabbed the maid by her long blonde hair and yanked her up and slid her over the bar and onto the floor in front of him. He noticed nothing of an attraction for the wench so his boot followed to her face, leaving her head laying in a puddle of blood, her features no longer recognizable.

Then he turned to the man at the table who just fell forward, his face landing in the remains of his meal before him. His heart failed him before the warrior ever had a chance to and this just brought a wicked laugh from Breunis Sans Pite, for now he turned to the two prizes he would reward himself with.

The next morning the black mailed warrior walked to the front door of the inn, the sun was just breaking the treeline outside and he laughed. Behind him in the inn the two young girls had met the fate of their parents from the evening before. Yet their parents did not suffer the horror of serving the warriors lust for the evening, the girls spirits leaving them well before their last breath.

Breunis made his way to the stallion and quickly mounted, reigning the mount south on the road towards RhyDin Town. He turned and looked to the inn once more and the sign that hung out front. The night before he had taken a dagger and put a scratch through passing in "The Passing Patron". The word pitiful had been carved in its place. Once more Breunis laughed and then kicked the stallion who responded by heading off in a steady gallop.

The black knight figured he would easily make RhyDin Town by evening, and perhaps this night he would entertain himself in the arena. Perhaps he might even run into an old friend, an unsuspecting old friend. Once more the knight laughed as he kicked the stallion into an even faster pace.

The young man rode quietly north on the road from RhyDin Town, his chestnut colt trotting gracefully beneath him. His silver eyes showed the depth of his thought as he made a casual swipe at the long brown hair that kept blocking his view.

He had been quiet upon the return of he and his father to RhyDin, perhaps because he was beginning to realize what he had always denied himself. He was his fathers problem, he was that last link to the memories of Alaisia that kept his father from being himself once more. It had taken him some time to realize it, now it was evident, yet the lad did not have an answer.

He loved RhyDin and retirement to any other life would be out of the question, and removing himself from Questrion had not worked as he recalled his brief stay with House Phoenix. Even the mage Moralitor seemed to know what he had been thinking, for just this morning before daybreak he had passed the mage when he was leaving the castle and saw that knowing look in the mage's eyes.

The chestnut colt then stirred from the trot becoming a bit skittish under Arlingond as the young prince tried to steady his mount. "Whoa, easy boy," he said in a soft voice as the sounds of a rider approached. The son of Valmion looked up and saw the black mailed rider approach and a mixture of emotions flooded through him as he spoke one word.

"Breunis".

The black knight reigned in the stallion as he saw the rider before him on the road. He just smiled, dismounting quickly as he untied the leather strap from the ebon bastard sword.

"Well now, fate has brought us together Prince Arlingond," Breunis called out, sarcasm evident in his words as the bastard sword left it's sheath with an evil hiss.

Arlingond was taken completly off guard with this encounter, stunned at seeing someone who was once enemy, then friend and now once more an obvious enemy. He slid from the saddle and landed softly on road, unsheathing Sliver in a graceful manner. The silver bastard sword glistened in the early morning sun as the young man began to approach the black knight.

"Why have you returned," Arlingond called out as Breunis closed the distance between them in a confident manner. Arlingond considered calling upon his Sidhe heritage and use the blessings of his mothers magic, but decided his sword would make more of an impact on the deranged man he faced.

"Why, to enjoy myself," Breunis said as he spit once, now no more than twenty yards from Questrion's Prince.

"Well, then let me be the first to spoil your return party," Arlingond said as he quickly closed the last ten yards of distance between them, the silver blade of Sliver clashing against the ebon bastard sword of the black knight. The sounds of metal meeting metal rang throughout the woods that provided the backdrop to the deserted road on which the two men fought.

Arlingond quickly gained the momentum as his skill was evident in the manner in which he countered every move Breunis made, but yet, it almost seemed as though the knight were toying with him. With each advantage Arlingond gained, the knight just allowed more of an opening. Finally Arlingond struck, Sliver finding an opening in the black knight's defence. As the silver blade cut through the black armor causing a wound, it quickly healed.

Thoughts rushed through Arlingonds mind as he saw the wound vanish right after he inflicted it, and now Breunis began to press the attack. The ebon bastard sword striking swift and hard, knocking the young prince back across the road as he desepratly tried to parry one then the other of the attacks.

"Do you feel fear lad, for you should as this morning you are going to die," Breunis said as he just beat Arlingond sensless with the series of cuts. With each parry of Questrion's Prince, the black knight felt the lad's strength diminish.

"Go on, use your mommies magic!" Breunis taunted him. "It is the only thing that will save you now!"

"You bastard," Arlingond cried out as he launched an attack of his own but then stood stunned as he felt the cold steel penetrate his stomach, the black knight's blade passing completely through him.

"Go on, use your magic boy," the knight hissed.

Breunis kicked Arlingond from his blade, pulling the ebon bastard sword from the young princes body which collapsed onto the road. The black knight now towered over the lad as he lay bleeding before him.

"Use your magic boy," the knight hissed again. "It is the only thing that will save you."

"No," Arlingond coughed out the word, blood spewing forth from his mouth as he tried to reach over to where his blade was laying. Thoughts were flying through his mind, as he started to imagine that this was a dream, one he had brought on with his earlier thoughts.

The young lad rolled over on his back, the morning sun a blur to his vision, his silver eyes now a dark cold grey. "Father," he tried to say the word, but yet there was little air to push it forth. He coughed again, more blood coming up.

"Damn you boy, save yourself, use your magic," Breunis said, looking down at him, not imagining that the young prince would not save himself to deliver a message to Valmion.

Arlingond coughed once more and the black knight dropped his sword and went to one knee beside the lad. "Use your mothers magic boy," his words not so cruel as he lifted the lad into his arms.

"Damn you Breunis," Arlingond said with his last breath, going limp in the black knights arms. Breunis dropped him quickly in the road, grabbing his sword and stepping back from the lifeless body before him.

"Damn you boy," were his last words as he mounted the stallion and continued towards RhyDin Town. Behind him, perhaps Questrions finest knight lay dead in the road, with none to witness the act.

The chestnut colt walked towards the body, sniffing the air knowing something was amiss. The stallion had long left down the road to the south and the colt leaned it's head forward and nudged the lifeless form of it's owner. He immediatly bolted, letting out a snort and charging down the road to the south.

The sun was now high into the morning as the birds began to circle overhead, while down below on the road something was catching their attention. And they circled.

It was late that afternoon when the black knight caught sight of Castle Questrion sitting atop a nearby hill. RhyDin Town was a short distance down the road now as he brought the stallion to a trot. He looked to the features of the castle that he rememered so well and continued down the road.

"I was going to pay you an early visit Valmion, but now I will let you live with this loss for awhile," he said to himself as he rode past the trail that led up to the castle. Just then Arlingond's chestnut colt came galloping down the road, not hesitating as he took the turn up the trail to the castle.

Breunis reigned the stallion to a halt and watched a moment, then nodded to himself. "Seems you get the message anyways," he spoke to himself once more, giving the stallion a kick which sent him trotting down the road. Tonight he would enjoy a good stout and a duel in RhyDin's famed arena, and just perhaps he would meet Valmion once more.

The colt charged through the gates and into the courtyard of Castle Questrion the guards standing back, startled to see the mount without their Prince. As he centered in the courtyard the colt settled a bit, allowing one guard to approach and take his reign.

"Someone best be telling Lord Valmion," one of the guards at the gate said, breaking the silence of everyones thoughts. The other three looked to the central keep where flashes of light could be seen through the windows and an erie humm echoed from the structure.

"Perhaps we might just send out a couple of riders to investigate," the commander of the watch said, not wishing to find out what was transpiring within the castle at present. The other three nodded and two of them headed quickly towards the stable for mounts.

"Tis dark days ahead for Questrion laddies," the commander said once more, pulling the gate closed.

It had been almost a week since the patrol from Questrion had brought back Prince Arlingond's body to the castle. Now the black robed mage stood outside an inn that had been recently boarded up. He looked to the sign as he made his way to the door, passing his hand before it before stepping through the wood as if it were not there.

Inside the inn was still a shambles, the background to a week ago still in place. The mage made his way through the debris thinking about the report he had heard. Three soldiers and a family of four. He thought about what it must have been like for them as he walked toward the fireplace.

The mage let his fingers run along the stone of the hearth as he started to think about the words to an old incantation. He centered on the fireplace and rested his other hand on the hearth, bowing his head slightly and began to humm.

Slowly images started to swirl in the mage's mind, the stone of the hearth recalling the events of the evening one week past. As the mage watched his face became distorted in a look of outrage, the memories of that sick evening filling his mind. Then suddenly he pushed himself away from the hearth and spoke but one word.

"Breunis."
