A question to the *BARONS*

Dear Barons:
I have been learning much and just about everything that there is to learn about dos, yet i have come across something that no one can answer but you lords and ladies.
1) What does each ring mean to you??
2)What is your interpretation of a challenge??
As i continue searching for answer i have come up against many peoples opinions, some say that they challenge because they dislike a baron, that you need to have something against them and 'tis why you challenge them. Do ye all look at a challenge the same way??
Cant one challenge just for skill and the honor??
Cant one just challage just to get a step higher and have the honor of being something new?

"1) What does each ring mean to you?"
My ring means quite a bit to me in different ways. It symbolizes my hard work to get to where I am today. It makes all the time spent training and working worthwhile. Secondly, to me it means that I have a responsibility to be a leader in the community and to live up to the standards set by those legends who held the ring before me. I can only hope to live up to those high standards.
"2) What is your interpretation of a challenge? Do ye all look at a challenge the same way?"
Each challenge is different and unique. Some people challenge because they feel that they can do a better job than the current Baron. Some challenge because of a long-standing grudge with that Baron or to avenge a loss of a friend to that Baron. Others make challenges that are meant to be friendly and yet competitive, to test the Baron if ye will. Then there are those who challenge simply to get a ring, to be Baron. With every challenge comes a new
reason which makes it impossible to look at all challenges in exactly the same way. The only thing that holds true for the Baron is to just go out and defend their ring, regardless of the circumstances.
"Can't one challenge just for skill and the honor?"
Yes, but sadly it seems that a challenge of that sort happens less and less lately.
"Can't one challenge just to get a step higher and have the honor of being something new?"
This would be somewhat of a selfish challenge. If ye challenge just to get a ring, just to be better, just to get that one extra fancy maneuver, then the ring means little to ye. The people who often make these kinds of challenges are not aware of the responsibility of being a Baron and often have little respect for the rich histories and lineage of their ring. Well, those are my thoughts on the questions. I hope it helped ye at least a little.

I will be honest when I say I do not know why these questions should be limited to the barons, as many others have held the title. Even if one has not held a title, I cannot understand why one cannot look at it from a hypothetical stance.
But in response to your inquiries:
The Meaning of the Ring: As I have written this a couple times, I will try not to be long winded. In the many years of the sport, there has been a character existing in the sport. I feel it is a job to keep the arena's character untainted, by upholding the rules.
The Meaning of a Challenge: There are many reasons one challenges, and to say it's always out of dislike is wrong. If you read the Histories, you will see the many reasons why people have challenged. Yes, people may challenge because they wish honorable combat, while others may out of sheer dislike. Sometimes it's a completely different reason.
I recommend looking at the histories, just to see what some of the reasons have been.

M'lord, I think that you misunderstood my question. 'Tis true that it is selfish to challenge just to gain a fancy. But to a new Warlord every rank just kinda has its own special meaning and as you achieve it you give it its meaning. So in other words or correct me if im wrong, If i were to challenge a baron you would look at it as selfish. I am a first time ever Warlady and Testing for my skill and the honor and if i cannot challenge for the
love of the sport, then what can i challenge for?? I cant challenge for a meaning cause i need to achieve the rank to find its meaning. 'Tis true that responsibility comes with being a baron, but i don't think that a warlord will step up to the challenge if they werent responsible to begin with.

My apologies to ye Lady Adriadne. I did misunderstand yer question. The way it was worded in saying 'to get a step higher' made it sound as if the only reason for the challenge would be to just get a higher position simply for the sake of being higher than others. If ye did not mean the question in that way, I apologize.

Madam Ariadne,
Your questions can only suggest that you have already thought about challenging for a baronial ring. As much of a milestone it is to reach the warlord rank, your journey t'ward baronial status is short of half over. Records show me you have an iota of experience in combat with warlords. As well, there is an obstacle many new warlords face, in the form of a slump whose severity is unpredictable. If you are good enough to overcome, my advice is to
settle into your newfound title before seeking the next step. It's one you'll have for a long time.
Subjectively,

The gypsy had some time away from Anubis, and as she saw the question she took a few moments to answer.
1- What does each ring mean to you?
Each ring, to me, is the physical symbol of the responsibility accepted upon gaining the title of Baron. They are not mere trinkets, their meaning is deep and rich, and are far more important than most other jewelry. Thus as the Baronies and the history are eternal, and ever-changing, yet still always stable and solid, the ring is the perfect symbol, an unbroken circle. I also see the rings as a symbol of the commitment to the community, almost
like a wedding ring. Barons and the Overlord are beholden to the DoS community more than any other, and the rings are, for the Barons, a physical reminder of that commitment. When a Walord retires, they are free to go as they wish, and leave generally no "holes." However, when a Baron retires, a space is left open, the Council dedicated to the DoS are no longer whole. The rings are a symbol of that. That is what each ring means to me.
2- What is your interpretation of a challenge?
As Galin has said, each challenge is different and unique and there is no general "interpretation" of all challenges. Each Baron must come across the situation and then interpret it, I think. One constant that remains is the responsibility of attempting to ensure the Duel of Swords is best served by the decisions made while holding title.
3- Do ye all look at a challenge the same way?
As there are as many grains of sand in the world there are views on a challenge. Because challenges are most often made on feelings and opinions, they can be interpreted 1000 different ways by 1000 different people.
4- Can't one challenge just for skill and the honor?
One can challenge, yes, but if that is what a dueler wishes, wouldn't an "ordinary" official duel suffice? I hope anyone issuing challenge would think of how they could improve the Duel of Swords by holding title. Being a title holder is not necessary for making a difference within the Arena... that is something I learned after gaining title myself.
5- Can't one just challenge just to get a step higher and have the honor of being something new?
Again, yes, one can challenge for those reasons; but if those are the only reasons, how would it benefit the Duel of Swords? As I said in my first answer, the title holders are responsible more than most others ( barring the officials ) for ensuring DoS is well-served. It is not something to just say "I'm a Baron," it is a job in some ways. Barons are the role-models and many times decision makers of the community. While one *can* challenge
simply for the reason of being a step higher, it could give the community cause to wonder if the Duel of Swords is being served by the one challenging for that reason.

Madame Ariadne,
I would love to answer your questions, but apparently after being here for 6 years I obviously don't know how to play the game when it comes to the titles. In short, everyone has different reasons then others for challenges or justifying their challenges, most of us can tell when it seems sincere and when they are blowing smoke screens.
You asked my advice about how to duel better and to learn some skill tips, and so now I offer you some other advice on your dueling career. Wait. Wait to challenge for any title, perferably a good full cycle being a Warlord solid without slipping from the rank. The Warlord Rankings will show how you do against your peers and if your better than the average at least for this season. Besides being viewed as worthy of skill. most of the community
would like to see you around and involved to get an idea of the type of person you are. That is why I say wait awhile, not just to prove skill, but to prove your place in the community as well. Good luck to ya.

Having been a Baroness once, for reasons different from many would have, I feel I can answer this question.
1) Many, including my opponent, said that the ring meant nothing to me. They were wrong.
Achieving the rank of Baroness was a goal I had set for myself. I knew that once I achieved it, there would be many who would seek to take it from me... so I was satisfied with achieving it.
2) A challenge is a personal thing, and always should be. Each person must interpret their own challenge in their own way... and each person will interpret the challenges of others in their own way. I challenged because I was betrayed, others have challenged because they felt the current title holder was inferior, dishonorable or otherwise unfit. Many challenged because they thought the current title holder would provide the toughest
challenge.
3) Yes, someone can just challenge for skill and honor. There will always be those who claim there are other reasons, but I have seen many such challenges in my time here.
4) Yes, someone can challenge just to get a step higher... this is much the same as challenging for skill and honor.
Challenge yourself first... Set your goals high, and never back down. There are many milestones to reach besides the titled ranks.

Methous,
Out of the newer duelers who have come out of the latest new school generation and have actually achieved a title, I would say Galin is one of the better examples.
What have you done? that's what I thought, nothing. Have a nice day.
