Sing A Happy Song Before Reading This
From: agrenish@aol.com (Agrenish)

To the current Renegades, and Valley Man, since she shared his interest...
Can I say I am surprised? Just another expectation inside my little game. Does it feel good to know that you are predictable? Oh well, having the mental capacity of a fence post would lead you to believe that you are not predictable and try to argue that point. Stay Reengage, challenge the crown, I don't care because I won't be around to feel your wrath, servants of the chaste.
For my warm welcome to the Overloadship(t), the most memorable have been Stumpy's, Varro's and Valley Man's. It seems that they dislike me because I don't show any respect towards people. Yet, they didn't show me any respect when I won the crown. Now, they might argue that I didn't earn their respect so they don't have to show me any... but they never earned my respect, so why should I show any? A bit silly ain't it?
But I would like to thank Rix, Jaycy, Lexi, Magnus, Drake and Hell, Lupton. I'm actually happy to see that there are a few people who can see past blind spots.
These last few days have been fantastic to me. I've heard so much shouting about me that you have made me feel important... as if I'm going to lead you people into war or something with significance... something with substance.
But... I've finished my sketch drawing of the crown hanging over my fireplace, which means my purpose of holding the crown is over. So you guys know, once Unagianiani gets the crown back, since I didn't want it anymore, he'll probably hand it over to Goldie Locks which means that there'll be a Baron's Tournament. That's scary, to know that one of those thirteen will be the next Overlord. Ah well, at least there's one or two that are allright.
You know what? After the first night of arguing, some of you people actually made me want to stick around and defend myself, but why should I play these unwinable games? Many of you will say that I am doing nothing but coping out, but you guys talk too much. I've done what I've wanted to do, and no one was able to stop me. It's more fun to win titles than to keep them.
And when I finish writing this letter, I'm going to wipe my ass, pick the crown off the latrine wall and have it shipped to back Unagi. But this isn't merely the ridding of the crown, I'm also retiring my common rank of Warlord. I'm going back home for some fun. I don't know if you care about any of this crap I've written, but I also know I don't give a damn. I've made my everlasting mark, have you?
So, to the few who enjoyed my company and style of competition... yeah, you know already.
So everyone else... please choke on your own vomit. I'd like that to be the last thing you taste before you die, and it'll be so funny watching it happen, or at least hearing about it when I visit. Losers.
King Preescott
P.S. Valley Man, I found out what I did with that sword I won in your little tournament. Apparently I've been using it as a letter opener all this time. Will the Question Mark Tournament ever be the same?

And he wonders why I don't care for him?
I guess this means the crown, being retired, will mean that there's going to be another tournament of barons.

This is a letter sent to the baron's council, regarding my place in the Tournament of Barons:
~~~~~
To the Council of Barons,
With the retirement of Overlord Agrenish Preescott, it is apparent that there is going to be a tournament of barons to see who is the new Overlord.
It is with this, where I am declining my spot in the Tournament of Barons to see who is the new overlord. I honestly feel that in my heart, I would not be a good representative of "the surpreme dueler."
This does not mean I am declining my services to the community. This means I feel there are those who would do a better job than me. It would be unfair to my opponents if I eliminate them from the tournament for a title that I do not want. I love the sport, and I love the honor of taking part in a historical match. However, I also love my honor, and I feel I'd be compromising it by participating in a tourney for the wrong reasons.
I do, however, wish luck to all those who take part in it.
Proud father, proud husband
Baron of the Tenth
~~~~~
Again, I would like to reiterate to all that this is not me trying to get out of performing my services to the community. It is me doing what I think is right.

Jarem sat there all day, all night, and all day again. It was simple really, wait for the standings to come, and then write the letter of challenge. Well, except the letter had already been written. He held it in hand, as he waited. His back to the wall, sitting on the ground, not moving an inch. The ground had been littered with trash all around him. He could only wait.
Yet it was odd to say the least. For if someone was to pick the brain of Jarem, he wouldn't have the answers. Why challenge for the Overlord? He could not say. It was just a feeling within him. A drive that pushed him forward. Much like when he went after the red opal Firestar. He wanted this, and wanted it bad. Yet, no explanation was to be had. Almost as if the pregnant woman needed pickles and peanut butter at three in the morning. Yet part of
him knew. The darkest part, the hidden part, the locked away part. His true being. Yes, he was Avery, and his friends all knew it. Jarem was only a portion of what Avery was. The often quiet side that was his dueling grace. Avery was locked away, forgotten, but pushing to get out. With Alex he was in deep, a place where no light would shine. And with Jarem he could see out. It was a covered window, as one looks to the world for the first time. That
was why he challenged. It was the push of Avery. What did Avery need? Simple, to hold a promise.
Promises were funny things really. They could bind two people together with just two simple words... I do. They could tear two people apart, with thrown out words that hold no meaning. Yet, the words he had held meaning. The brash young man had made a promise to the overlord of past. Now, after all this time of waiting and trying to uphold it, it was time to keep it. Nine months had past. Nine months of always getting screwed out of the position to
uphold the promise. So, he held the letter the messenger wrote for him, and waited.
He looked up to see the messenger come. He had seen a couple in the days he had been here, so it was no big deal. The messenger looked over Jarem with a smile.
"Baron" The man gave a nod to Jarem as he went about his work. Jarem looked up at the man who held the letter. He watched as he tacked it to the old cork board, with his flashy grin.
"What's that?" Jarem asked the man. It was known that he couldn't read, and so he had the messenger tell him the content of the letter. His face, and mood changed in that instant. His body squeezing up as he stood. The messenger upon finishing the letter, took one look at the young boy baron and took of to deliver the rest.
"You have to be kidding me!!" He looked up to the sky throwing his arms open. "What have I done to deserve this!!" the shout echoed throughout the arena. And with the fading yulp, he ran from the arena... pissed as hell. The letter he once held, fell to the ground in front of the cork board, laying for all eyes to see. It read.....
I challenge the Overlord.

He shakes his head, disgusted that this is what the arena has to offer these days. Glad he is no longer an active part of this laughingstock. However, he is unable to not comment on this...
With that, he writes...
Var, I think you'd be a better Overlord than some of the other Misguided ones out there. Maybe you should reconsider. At least you actually care for the sport over yourself.

::completely caught off guard by this...having thought Agrenish would stick around a while::
Agrenish,
Im not saying its honorable in retiring the crown, but you do seem to realize that not many would like to see you there. Though, Im really not sure you wanted it in the first place, unless you are truthful in stating you just wanted a picture.
Anyway...I do feel that I should enter this tournament. I feel that I could be a good Overlord...not the best...but not the worst. I have my own ideals that I would like to share as Overlord. Many may not care what I feel, but I shall be entering this tournament, as Im sure others will.
Var,
I respect you a great deal, and that last message just shows how much. I wish you would reconsider entering this tournament though. You are a great duelest and would make a great Overlord.

After sending out a few letters, she comes back to the message board. Finding Jarum's small post, she just chuckles wryly, shaking her head. "Sometimes, fate doesn't play fair... you of all people should know that."
Her thoughts drift back to her aborted challenge to Adeena, then her challenge to Avery that was also dropped when another challenged before she could press her own. "Yeah, sometimes fate just bites."

Take this letter very seriously.
When I read the who we have ranked as the 13 barons, I have to worry. I'm not going to sit here and pick anyone out in particular, but out of the thirteen, I only see 5, possibly 6 of the barons as being capable of being even a mediocre overlord. I know Var doesn't want to put himself in the position to be the top weenie, and he was one of the six I could handle. From what I know of Jeff, he feel like I that the Overlordship is the end of the road,
so I don't know if he's gung-ho for being Overweenie either.
That leaves us with only a few decent choices. Any of the rest become top dog is like making the mail boy the mayor. Unfortunately we have no say in this, I wish Aggy had though a little more about the retirement of the crown.
No offense to those of you I don't feel capable, it's not the fact that you won't be worthy *some* day, it's just that alot of you are still cutting your teeth here and honestly, once you've been the king, there's nowhere else to go but down.
Ask yourself if you really feel you should be the overlord, the choice you make is going to affect everyone.
I'd rather just vote Jeff in, screw his opinion and career, I want an experienced OL, not someone who's still wet behind the ears.

As much as it warms my heart ta know I have BRK's love and affection ::stops to keep from cracking up:: I have already made my decision not ta enter any upcoming tournament.
My role is as baron, I will remain a renegade if I feel a need ta keep da OL in check, or a loyalist if da tournament winner is indeed worthy of my support.
I cannot site any one reason, Billy Ray covered part of it. I have accomplished much in my time here, Overlord is a goal I have simply not attempted ta achieve yet. I have served longer as a baron dan any other rank in my time in DoS, perhaps over my 6 rings longer dan any other baron. I worked hard ta become Senior baron, I consider it a great honor ta have outlasted a truely impressive class of 8 other barons when I defeated Daegarth long ago.
I do not despise da politics our OL role is involved in, politics make DoS great, however OL is a position which involves much consideration; balancing friendships and values. I would much rather stand as a baron, in control of my own future (no intercessions) and being able ta do so without stepping on any toes.
I have been in DoS over 3 yrs now, my views have changed over time, and yet I am still struggling ta determine how I would approach being an Overlord. Were I ta impart my values, all barons would be renegade, we would all duel fer ourselves. However I almost feel its unfair ta remove da political aspect of da rank, not ta mention many of my friends would probably wish ta champion me from time ta time.
Overlord is a difficult road, it is da pinnacle of our sport, I am in no rush ta get dere.

Baron Oakenshield,
I am not really sure how we got on each others bad side, but please let me say that my respect for you as Senior Baron grows with each passing month. The wisdom you have gained during your tenure within these hallowed halls is something that the whole community could learn from. May your reign be a long one indeed your grace.
With respect,

Let's talk about courage. Specifically, the courage of your convictions whether other people agree with you or not.
Var doesn't want to be Overlord, so he doesn't compete. Ditto for Jeff. They would apparently have the courage not to seek a prize that others might think they should seek. They believe what they believe and they are willing to act on their beliefs instead of taking part in the tourney and then grumbling about how they don't want to be Overlord.
Agrenish, on the other hand, appears to somewhat lack the courage of his 'honesty'. If this is how he feels about the crown and the sport, then it is probably best he does resign. Then again, we all knew he felt this way about the crown and the sport and so did he. If he was so willing to take the crown just so he could insult the sport, then his values are rather twisted. However, we all knew that too.
I initially said that I thought Agrenish might actually make a good Overlord. It would appear that I was wrong. The question is, will he wait a whole cycle to make his comeback so he can insult us some more? Or will he back in a week?

Let's talk about courage. Specifically, the courage of your convictions whether other people agree with you or not.
Var doesn't want to be Overlord, so he doesn't compete. Ditto for Jeff. They would apparently have the courage not to seek a prize that others might think they should seek. They believe what they believe and they are willing to act on their beliefs instead of taking part in the tourney and then grumbling about how they don't want to be Overlord.

Jeff,
I am sure you don't give a damn either what I have to say, but your words now have probably been some of the best words I have heard you say since becoming Senior Baron.

Summer goes to the board and glances through the different notes. She laughs reading of the Pirates retirement, but falls silent reading BRK's pronouncement.
She notes Jeff's writing and reads quietly. Very quietly. Without comment she goes off to find him.
