Challenge to the First.
From: rdidrake@aol.com (RDI Drake)
Date: 27 Oct 1999 00:13:03 EDT
Let it be known...
On this eve, in the hallowed Arena of the Duel of Swords, two skilled and honorable men met to duel for the right to wear the First Ring.
The Warlord Daegarth Mithmellon was the challenger this eve. Standing as his second was famed Warlord Lyon T'gar. The Lady Calenmir Landstar stood as his Lady of Honor, and his son Melgarth bore his standard... a golden flaring phoenix set on a field of black.
Defending the First Ring this eve was Loyal Baron Zafiroo Turidan, who dueled alone, with no Second or Lady. He duels under the colors of royal blue, trimmed in silver.
After the formalities were dispensed, the two duelers entered the ring and began the duel... which progressed as follows.
First Ring, Round One. With slow and deliberate movements, the duelers close upon each other. Throwing caution to the wind, they trade strikes for matching points.
( LC-HC ) Tied at one.
First Ring, Round Two. Seeking to avoid further damage, the Baron sweeps his blade up in defence... Yet the Warlord has quickly moved to the better position.
( FSS-FLP ) 2-1 Daegarth.
First Ring, Round Three. The Warlord slides back, watching for an opening... but the opening is found by the Baron's blade.
( SH-HC ) Tied at 2.
First Ring, Round Four. The Warlord moves back, his blade moving to force the Baron back... Which proves for the best, as the Baron fails to move away in time.
( LC-FSS ) 3-2 Daegarth.
First Ring, Round Five. Falling back to defence, the Warlord sweeps his blade down... Though the move is unrequired, as the Baron drops back.
( FCP-SH ) 3-2 Daegarth.
First Ring, Round Six. The Warlord keeps his blade ready, seeking an elusive opening... But this time the Baron's move proves swifter!
( HC-TH ) Tied at three.
First Ring, Round Seven. Both the Warlord and the Baron maneuver
for position, yet neither gain much for their efforts.
( FDk-FSS ) Still tied at three.
First Ring, Round Eight. This time it is the Baron who moves first, targetting the counter-circling Warlord with a successful strike.
( LC-TH ) 4-3 Zafiroo.
First Ring, Round Nine. The Baron keeps moving, watching for a sign of what will come... But defence from both duelers proves naught but their skill.
( FCP-FLP ) 4-3 Zafiroo.
First Ring, Round Ten. The Baron remains on the defence, reversing his parry low now... Only to see that the Warlord has reversed his parry as well.
( FCP-LP ) The Score remains, 4-3 Zafiroo.
First Ring, Round Eleven. The duelers are beginning to show the fatigue of this duel, but the Warlord is still ready to prevent the Baron from striking.
( SH-TH ) Tied at four.
First Ring, Round Twelve. The Warlord moves in, pressing the Baron's defence... But the Baron does not defend, instead trading strikes.
( HC-LC ) Tied at Five.
First Ring, Round Thirteen. Some call this the unlucky round, and as the Warlord twists to face the Baron... it is the Baron who finds his luck to be poor this time.
( LP-HC ) 4.5-4 Daegarth.
First Ring, Round Fourteen. Daegarth presses forward, his blade held steady... and at the last moment, he moves to the side... but despite his motion, he is still caught.
( SS-LC ) 6-5.5 Zafiroo.
First Ring, Round Fifteen. Keeping up his assault, the Baron moves in... The Warlord waits for him, then quickly matches strikes to further lengthen the duel.
( HC-HC ) 6-5.5 Zafiroo.
First Ring, Round Sixteen. The skill of both Warlord and Baron has been obvious since the beginning of this duel... And this round proves no exception as both continue to maneuver for position.
( SS-SS ) 6-5.5 Zafiroo.
First Ring, Round Seventeen. Seeking an end, the Warlord moves forward, his blade held level... But the Baron, though tired, still has enough strength for one last parry.
( TH-CP ) 6.5-5.5 Zafiroo.
Thus did Baron Turidan successfully defends the First Ring by a score of Six point Five to Five point Five in Seventeen rounds. The match was a true display of skill, courage and honor on the part of both men.

Lord Mithmellon, twas an excellent duel, as is to be expected from a warrior such as yourself.
Baron Turidan, my congratulations. A third defense, and against a duelist the stature of Daegarth Mithmellon...well, let's just hope that maybe now some respect and a break will be coming your way. You've proven your worth in my eyes.
Fantastic duel, I only wish I would have been in better spirits to witness it.

To both contestants,
Extremely well dueled. Such a hard and closely fought duel should be remembered and admired by all. If I had more time, I would have been there myself. However, since my retirement, I have found I am even busier than before I retired.

Baron Turidan,
For along time, although many (yourself included) claim you to be unknown and unwatched, I have been watching for quite some time. What you lack in words you make up in blade, well won. I look forward to us exchanging words for more than a few short moments one day.
Lord Mithmellon,
Well tried. You have been a great asset to the sport and your skill has shown excellently, you should be proud. I have no doubts that you will someday regain a title in the halls of the Arena.
