Ignorance Is Bliss

Goon awoke around midday, a soft rain pitter-patting on his forehead. As he sat up, the terra firma which clung to his massive back slowly fell away, as did that which had settled on his pants when he rose fully to greet the new day. He grinned at the chirping birds, he grinned at the raccoons heading off to bed, he grinned wider at the passing tiger, thinking the striped feline might try to fight him. Sadly, the cat
passed by, surely knowing that a tussle with Goon would be rather painful. Disappointment was clear on the large man's face for but a moment, when he heard the splashing of the river.

Turning his head downwards, Goon took a little sniff. "Lot stinky.." came his observation, prompting him to start peeking around the trees, searching. Confident no one was there, he worked his way out of the few articles of clothing on his body and went splash-down in the river to bathe. Splashing about, his mind turned to happy thoughts of fighting and drinking and having lot fun.

It was truly bliss for him. Never would he remember the cries. The men and women involved had done their jobs well all those years ago. The memory inhibitor worked perfectly, perhaps even too well.. but was it so bad that he forgot more than what they chose? Indeed, it would not seem so odd for him to have such gaps in his mind with precedents like he had set.

It was a happy Goon that would daydream about being the Diamond. One can only wonder what his mood would be were he to recall the faces of those who stood before him, some scared out of their wits, some bravely fighting a towering foe against near-hopeless odds, as he pummelled them one by one. Perhaps he would take consolation in the fact that most of the injuries weren't fatal.

What a good man he had become.. helping the innocent, fighting evil if it appeared somewhere.. he had a tremendous reputation around the dueling arenas. Certainly it would be shattered were word to get out about his recent exploits, about his systematic, almost robotic, beating of men, women, and children. Especially harsh would the judgement be were they to find out about that poor six-year-old girl.. of course, they might realize it was only his
body, not his mind, which committed these deeds, and forgive him.. maybe.

How curious he would be if he remembered his exit from the cabin that night! What did his friends think? Were they amazed? Did it shock them to see him suddenly leave in such a manner? Or did they just take it to be more of his eccentric behavior? If only the questions could come to his mind.

And of course, the future.. what would come of it? Would he be hypnotized and beckoned again by the sliver of technology in his throwback's body? Did fate have it in store for him to ever find out about it? Oh, the mysteries that surrounded him were intense indeed. It was well for the Organization that he was, at heart, such a simple man. They were truly lucky; while with other, darker, more "assassin-like" people under their control, they had
to deal with the possibility of someone nosy trying to figure out that person's secrets.

Not with Goon. No one would ever suspect the adorable clown of the Outback of such heinous crimes. The majority would most likely not believe him possible of it, even if the shard of metal and silicon in his ankle was placed before them.

Goon's daydreams passed for a moment as he exited the river and got dressed, blissfully unaware of the last week.

And somewhere, someone was smiling.
