Since I will keep this to the subject at hand, I would like to know what honor there is in beating each other around a ring over a gods-be-damned joke that was taken the wrong way? If knowing that this whole scene could have been solved by a bit more civility than was displayed means that I have no intelligence, then I pray I am the village idiot seen in this light.
As for your reference to the situation between Jeffrey and Huma, I would ask you if you recall that there was more than simple blind pride in that duel of honor. That was a man coming to aid a friend as well as to try to prevent an unworthy man from attaining the crown. You demean that very match by comparing it to this chest-pounding between Cassius and Mistress Wells.

However, do you maintain that it would be better if Baron Maximius merely brushed off the lady's complaint? Mayhaps he should have ignored or even laughed off such an imperious request as she made.
Instead, he came to realize the harm his words had caused and sought to make reparations for them. He was even willing to forgo any penalty to the Lady should she lose, clearly accepting his fault in the matter in a mature manner.
By reading the Lady's reply to this, it would appear that she recognized this, but her pride keeps her holding to the original terms of the deal.
