DUEL OF FISTS

Something evil in the Duel of Fists stirs. ~ Eli Grady

On the evening of the 26th day of the 9th month by the Eastern calendar I was sitting in the DoF watching a fairly good match when in came Dustin (Flavorless Gum). From his appearance and demeanor it could be readily noted he was in an agitated and unguarded state. Out of the clear blue sky he asked Janella (Jaded) if she would, at the next opportunity slit the throat of one Ariadne Angeles. I was absolutely shocked that an open threat of murder
would be aired publicly. So much so that I made sure that he was aware that I was there and that my Journal was recording the spoken word. Janella told him that she would not kill anyone in cold blood, in public and that she (Janella) was not his assassin.

This apparently sobered Dustin somewhat because he began attempting to cover his tracks. When he appeared to realize that he could not unsay that which has been said he resorted to threats against my person. I reminded him that the power of the press was such that it could not be threatened or intimidated. We exchanged a few words and then I left to take this tale of murder and conspiracy back to the editor.

The editor played the Journal to authenticate the spoken word and once he got over his shock promptly chastised me for stooping to such a low level as to bandy words with a obviously unbalanced person.

There you have it folks. If I were you Miss Ariadne Angeles I would take extraordinary steps to protect myself from this wild and dangerous man.

A copy of the scripted missive was forwarded to the Watch for their action. One can be reasonably sure that eventually they will capture Dustin and bring him to justice.

DUEL OF MAGIC

Nothing of great note has been observed or reported. The new Keepers are settling into their estates. Various alignments and realignments between the regular patrons, businesses, and groups is underway as people look to their advantages.

DUEL OF SWORDS

Competition for the baronial rings heats up as two matches are scheduled for the 4th day of the tenth month. Details as to time, location, and combatants can be found on the DoS boards.

The Overlord of the DoS has made no public announcements of note as yet. Once he does so we will attempt to inform the public.

EDITORIAL COLUMN ~ by Sylyim Fondor

I was accosted on the streets of our fair RhyDin by several unsavory characters the other day. Each of them unshaved, unbathed and smelling of cheap ale and wasted life. They attempted to intimidate me into changing the editorial policy of the paper to ignore the activities of certain self-styled important people. Well, fellow citizens I can assure you that the editorial policy is to expose to the light of day that which is corrupt and can not
stand the light of truth shining upon it.

The press shall not be silenced. The people of RhyDin have a right to know and we shall do all that is in our power to ensure that the truth has been made known to one and all. So for those who seek to muzzle the press you know not what you have done, but in times to come you shall surely learn.

GUILDS ~ by Garumph Fondor

The presence or absence of Guilds in and about the various venues in our fair city is a matter of the citizenry to decide. No one person, persons, or groups has the right to impose a Guild upon anyone, nor does any group have the right to attempt to foster unrest against a particular guild.

A guild called the Galladrim recently attempted to establish itself in the inner world and was promptly assaulted by various and sundry persons attempting to force it away. The Guild master of The Galadrim, one Irus of Masaca in our opinion showed great forbearance in not lodging a complaint against these people with the RhyDin City Council under the Freedom of Association Act.

Instead he has taken the high road and has withdrawn public attempts to solicit membership. We applaud him in this act of civic responsibility. For those who would attempt to curtail the activities of any group within the inner world we remind you that RhyDin is a city of light and progress which can and will defend the rights of all of its citizenry.

THE SOCIAL WHIRL by Evan Fondor

Mrs. Fon du Lac of the RhyDin du Lacs recently held her a garden party honoring the coming of age of her daughter Elespeth du Lac. The even was held in the RhyDin Opera House gardens. In attendance were the usual notables about town as well as the Deylon, son of the Baron de L'mercy who was the proud escort off Elespeth.

The even went very well with the musicians from the Royal Philharmonic providing a stately background to an afternoon of fun and festivity. The Whirling Devers a group well-noted for their spectacular dance choreography acted out the signal events of Elespeth in her past 16 years of life from birth to this present day.

The lucky Deylon then escorted the fair Elespeth to the ceremonial Arc of Love Triumphant and bestowed upon her the official 16th year kiss welcoming her into adulthood. After which the party adjourned. Welcome to adulthood fair Elespeth, may your future be bright.

The Baron Armand Knel-Fondor has returned from a summer at his estates in the wine country bringing back with him four caravans of summer wine which will surely be well received in the finer hostels and inns in RhyDin. The Baron said that the bandits and other groups seeking to wrest control of the high-road have been mostly routed by the vigorous armed patrols maintaining freedom of travel. He went on to say that they had only one skirmish of note
and that was easily handled by their own caravan guards. Welcome back Baron, we all look forward to the new wines.

Is it just me or does this paper seem to have some holes missing sometimes?

Last week, The Blindfold proxy's match was recorded, but the two matches making History of the Best of Three series for Baronial matches were gone, those being Cory vs. Dustin for the Seventh Ring, and Myself vs. Deluthan for the First. Other than that, some other coverage has been missing as well. I know the job is hard sometimes, but I don't think people want to hear a partial story...I know I don't.

Dear Editor:

How is the public to take seriously a supposed journalistic endeavor which refers to non-existent governmental entities as the "Watch" and the "City Council"?

Truly, if your paper's newsgathering talent is unaware of the lawless nature of this city, how can the public trust that you are not slandering the names of certain individuals as well?

Regards,
Ian Rex.

Ian Rex,

RhyDin is by no means as lawless as one would like to think. The city bursts at the seams with a lawless element, and to some it would appear that there is no order. But, I say to you sir, there is order and there is men, women, and other sentient beings who fight to preserve the lives and property of law-abiding citizens.

You sir are ill-informed. Indeed our very society is bound by order. The fighter subscribe to the rule of law and acceptd the rulings of the officials of the sport who with their powers can easily handle the unruly.

Indeed there is a City Council. One only has to see the countless tax receipts and invoices the paper pays on a daily basis to recognize that. There is a watch, indeed it is small and undermanned, but of late it works with the private armies of the pillars of RhyDin society to keep the undertown in its place.

To imply that this newspaper would slander anyone is absurd. Using the latest inventions of the DoM mages we record all conversations anf file them for future reference.

Sir, you are gravely mistaken in your contention that RhyDin is a lawless city. It is a fair city, willing and able to take in any and all and give them the opportuity to rise or fall by their own merits. Where else but here is their so much personal freedom that is bounded by the mores of a duly stable society.

Mr. Grady~

As there is no *official* law-enforcement in this city, the Watch is merely a vigilante group. Do not make it out to be more than it is.

To whom it may concern,

While Ian and Sidartha are more.. polite in the matter, I will be as blunt and forthcoming as possible.

You, sir, are a complete fool. If you believe that there are some.. "Councils" that hold sway in Rhydin, you are sadly mistaken.

There is No law. And for you to imply that some Guild Dink could lodge a complaint against me, while I know you didn't mention my name in particular, I do know to what you were referring and that it was I, There is NO Council in existance that holds any power over me to punish me for remarks I made, make, and will continue to make.

I find the jotterings of the columnist to be totally ignorant of a typical moron who supports guilds, and your standing up for him, while admirable, is misguided and just as ignorant.

If you dislike my words, feel free to go to your "Council" and use the "Law" against me.

You will find nothing will happen from it, and my thoughts and words will continue to be unchanging.

And just so you know my opinion of your paper, it makes good lining for my kitty litter box.

The woman paused before the ancient cork, shaking her head slowly as she read the purported news. Taking quill in hand, and stifling a hearty laugh she penned a note, then tacked it to the cork.

Dear Editor:

Tis rather plain that the employees of the RhyDin Times-Reporter have little knowledge of the great city, or for that matter of the lands which surround it, or for that matter of the vast planet.

It is patently obvious that the employees of this so called newspaper, and I use the term, advisedly, know nothing at all of the vastness of the City or of its myriad citizens or of the estates, enclaves, manor and town houses, taverns, inns, shipyards, docks, market places, thoroughfares, alleys, highways and byways that are extant within its boundaries. It is beyond comprehension that you would permit your staff to continue in this attempt to
foist off on the populus such inaccurate information with the references made to the existence of such governmental agencies as a City Council or the Watch. For that matter, references made in past editions to a RhyDin Prison System, or a RhyDin Tax Authority or RhyDin City Engineering or RhyDin Public Works are beyond ludicrous. I may only presume that the staff of this paper has never so much as set foot beyond the Red Dragon Inn or the environs
of Twilight Island, The Outback or the basement beneath the Inn.

Perhaps your editorial staff should limit themselves to reporting on functions that they have in fact witnessed. Indeed, perhaps, the owner or owners of this so called newspaper might seriously consider an attempt to hire educated, professional and well trained reporters.

Personally, the editions extant to date leave much to be desired in the way of accurate reporting. I may only presume that the current editorial staff and roving reporters had few if any credentials from previous news agencies and quite apparently little or no experience in their chosen profession. Perhaps one may charitably opine that since this newspaper seems to have on staff a number of people who carry the same surname, that nepotism held sway
in its hiring practices which may account for the apparent lack of accurate reporting as well as the obvious lack of professionalism of its staff

Further, one must indeed wonder to whom this purported newspaper is paying taxes. Certainly any long time resident of the city would find it beyond amusing were anyone to come knocking at their door with a demand for tax payment claiming they represented the RhyDin Tax Authority.

The assertions made by one Sylyim Fondor as to the denizens of the City are beyond ridiculous. One must wonder to which society he or she is making reference. It is quite apparent that he or she has absolutely no first hand knowledge of the City or of its many residents or of its true extent. I am most assuredly amused to read of so called private armies purportedly in the employ of supposed pillars of RhyDin society which supposedly keeps the so
called undertown in its place. Odd that no one with whom I have spoken and who maintains a residence within the City has so much as lain eyes on the so called Watch.

The article by one Garumph Fondor regarding Guilds is beyond laughable. Assuredly there are some backward areas of the City where such an organization might be welcomed, though quite honestly, I would expect those areas are not often frequented by other than such denizens as one might come upon were one to venture to the Red Dragon Inn of an eve. Though perhaps one or more of this Galladrim has ventured upon the Isle as well as ventured to the
Outback and the Basement, one may only opine their presence is tolerated for in that these areas have long been held to be neutral ground wherein denizens from many planes, lands, universes, realms, and associations are not excluded. Assuredly were such rabble to venture upon private lands they would meet a well deserved demise as the scourge they represent.

If it the intention of the RhyDin Times to be considered a serious journalistic endeavor, it would perhaps behoove the owners, editors and reporters to stick with reporting the news accurately and cease attempting to claim that the newspaper is reporting on RhyDin, the City, the Planet, the Universe.

Though I have long subscribed to various news services, rest assured, I would offer not one copper for this service, not after having had the pleasure of reading the professionally written publications, The DoS Today and The Duely Noted. You may apprise your owners that to date, the five editions of your rag in no way measure up to the publications of Oscar Madison and his staff or of Johanna Gutenburgh and her staff or of Seamus MacDonnough and his
staff. You may further apprise your owner and your staff that I rather doubt the newspaper and its current staff shall ever reach the professional quality and competent reporting of the previous publications.
