Acceptance of the Challenge for the 10th
From: cassiusmaxim@aol.com (Cassius Maxim)
Date: 22 Aug 2001 01:09:01 EDT
The following is as it was when sent to the appropriate parties:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Var Medici-Giovanni,
This past Friday, you recieved a briefly worded, official acceptance of your challenge for the Tenth Ring of the Duel of Swords; a hellishly hectic schedule restrained me at the time from writing anything more. Now that my items of personal business over the weekend are dealt with, I wish to inform the Council with this missive, and establish a few things.
Warlord, I will say little other than that your challenge is accepted, as I do not wish to pander to your love of a verbal quarrel. I will stop to say that I do not agree with your assessment of my worth as a Baron, as I am sure that you do not agree with my assessment of yours. Also, that I am not surprised at this challenge; indeed, I am only surprised that it has taken this long.
I suggest a date of Friday of next week in the Annex, with a time and official to be discussed between the two of us. If the date is not acceptable, we shall discuss that issue as well. The match will be a Best of Three.
Finally, Warlord...know this much. I have held the Tenth Ring longer than any previous Barony I have held..longer than all three previous baronies combined, in fact.
The Tenth is one of two rings that I have successfully defended in combat. It was as Baron of the Tenth that I had the priviledge to host a tournament. It was as Baron of the Tenth that I had the priviledge to champion the Council and defend the Sixth Ring
one more time. It is as Baron of the Tenth that I have had the priviledge of voting alongside such lumninaries as Ellisa Morgan, Daelin Dragonsblade, Unagi Miyamoto, and Verceterix Gavin Favre, just to name a few. Know that you will not be the only one in the challenge ring with an affinity for the Tenth.
Also, that you are not the only one with boomerang-like qualities; in the event that you win, I will be rechallenging. Good day.
P.S: Good luck to Galin Taelca and Unagi Miyamoto. May the lips of victory kiss your falchion and your shirasaya, respectively.
For someone with so little to say, you sure did say a lot more.
My response, in turn sent to the Council, Nych, Stormi, and Cas. I had also sent it to Galin by mistake, as I forgot he's no longer a baron, but I realized my error and sent Xeric a copy as well.
Baron Cassius Maximus,
Upon making sure that the date you suggested is a suitable one, I hereby accept Friday, August 31st, as the date. Since this will be a best of three format, I suggest the challenge match begin at 9:00 PM Eastern Rhydin Time, and my choice of official is Nycholas de Grylington.
I find this challenge to be a matter of close interest, for more than one reason alone. I believe Var to be an honest, well meaning, man of honour who acts as he feels correct, moral, and honourable. I believe Gaius Cassius, likewise, to be a man of personal honour and good intentions. I believe both men share an occasionally dangerous impetuosity and both have
been quick in the past to bandy insults with those of whom they disapprove. What is more important, I respect both men and consider my relations with them to be cordial.
I have been disturbed at times by Var's tendency toward proprietary feelings about a symbol that is the property of something much bigger than he is. I am angered, at times, by Gaius Cassius's tendency to measure his own worth by his achievements and to act as if he were superior to those of what feels to be lesser achievements. I think that Var's challenge to Gaius Cassius was overly accusatory and not the best message from one honest man to
another. I think that Gaius Cassius's reply to Var was overly self righteous and that an honest man would not need to boast overmuch. I am disappointed that Var has allowed his proprietary feelings for th Tenth ring to override the fact that there are far more appropriate targets if he wishes to unseat an unworthy Baron. I am disappointed that Gaius Cassius felt enough of a sting from Var's words to attempt so vocally to argue his own worth and his
own proprietary feelings.
Overall, I am disappointed in both Baron and Warlord. Both men are better than their conduct so far in this instance would indicate. Simply because of the fact that I know both men are better than their behaviour at the moment, I strongly believe that the ring will be in good hands regardless of the outcome. Despite this belief, I must confess that it would perhaps be better for Var if Gaius Cassius were to emerge successful.
Percy used the word "I" fifteen times in fourteen sentences. That's got to say something about a person.
Since this claim has been going on for a while, Percy, I feel the need to ask:
What have I ever said to indicate that I claim the Tenth ring as mine? I have claimed on multiple occassions that I don't believe in going after just any ring, that the tenth ring has meaning. During my tenures as a Baron, two opportunities have come by where I could enter a Baron's tournament to shoot for Overlord, not to mention the many times I could have challenged. I don't, because I, personally, don't like just "challenge for any title."
I can understand at first why you would feel there was a sense of propriety, considering those who refer to various rings as "my ring." However, given the numerous explanations stating that I never claim the ring to be "mine" your accusations are sorely mislead. Perhaps you can explain, despite all my claims that I don't feel the ring is mine, you feel that there is justification your accusation?
Note to Charlie: The "I/Sentence ratio" was much greater in my writings. Hopefully that's not a bad sign.
Personally, I don't think so. You were actually the topic of conversation. What is surprising is that he had nothing to do with the topic yet his ratio was really up there.
Actions speak louder than words. Despite all your claims that you don't feel the ring is yours, you continue to single-mindedly pursue it. You have passed up chances to dehtrone Barons who have truly needed to be dethroned to reacquire the Tenth. This would indicate a pattern, despite some of your words. It is possibly an unhealthy pattern, and your denial of propietary feelings could be due to the need to convince yourself that you are not
obsessed.
I do not have the expertise to say, myself, whether you are 'obsessed' in the strictest definition of the word. The fact remains, however, that your behaviour would indicate proprietary feelings about the Tenth despite your words.
Please forgive me, Percival, for I was beginning to feel a bit embarassed by your kind words regarding my honesty, well meaning, and willingness to do what is correct. However, these kind words have me at a loss when you write another note stating that my words about not feeling property towards the ring is a statement of denial.
Of course, I cannot convince you or anyone else that my desire to hold the ring is merely a personal preference, and not a feeling that the tenth is "mine." Considering my love for the histories, I am quite aware that there is something greater than myself behind the ring.
Again, I cannot convince you or anyone else exactly what the ring means to me. Possibly this note will shed some light on those who feel there is anything otherwise; if not, then at least I made the attempt to clear the misconception.
No one has said you do not know that there is something greater than yourself behind the ring. In fact, I believe, the matter of preference you mention is exactly the topic of discussion. It is very obvious that your personal preference, among the rings, is for the Tenth. I believe your personal preference is very well documented by now. My concern is elicited because of the apparent degree of this preference.
Your preference for the Tenth ring has apparently caused you to make decisions based on regaining it rather than considering the general situation and picking your challenge as fits the current political landscape. I could be mistaken in this impression, but it is the conclusion the information available to me leads me to draw. Such a degree of preference, in my opinion, has gone beyond simple preference and become something more. Perhaps
even something harmful to you.
Percy,
Why dont you go ahead and get a Baron's ring. When you do I will come after it. Any question as to my motivation?
I don't think anyone questioned your motives when you challenged for a Baron's ring the first time and I don't think anyone will do it the second either. I think most people are discerning enough to detect your motives immediately.
