<< Every map I've seen of RhyDin, there's only one continent... it is possible that Shargoth is the northern half of a second continent on the same world? It would certainly simplify certain matters. >>

There have been many maps of Rhydin, and many changes to it. At one time even the land of Cadonia, from whence Siera Redwin did hail from, claimed a portion of the map, but the land of Rhydin seems to be nebulous one.
Some prefer to see it as a specific concrete world. Some prefer that it be ever changing. Some even preferred that there be no land at all and only an Inn which touched upon all realities (I know this was Kairee's preference back in the old days).

My own assumptions are perhaps somewhere in between. I believe that there's no harm in there being a "world of Rhydin" with fixed landscapes and countries (in fact I tend to think it's a natural extension of the creative process with people wishing to have concrete lands, and even neighboring lands, to write about), but that the town of Rhydin itself sat perhaps upon a more unstable point that touched upon all times and places. Such that one
could head north, into lands mapped as part of Rhydin, and another time head north and cross unbeknownest into a completely different realm.
The methodolgy I always used to handle this was that people would arrive at where they expected to arrive. If they left the Inn and headed north, expecting to arrive in New Caithness, that's where they would arrive. If they headed north and expected to arrive in the Plains of Blood, that is where they would arrive. I generally perceived this as an unconcious activity. Those concious of the "effects" surrounding Rhydin (usually the spellcaster
types), would be capable of "planewalking" to wherever they wished to go at will.
I also believe there are lands that cannot be reached through merely the effort of desire. e.g. perhaps Asgard may only be reached by the Rainbow bridge, therefore any wishing to arrive there must find the Rainbow bridge. I also tend to think of Avalon as a similar such place. None may arrive in Avalon save those that are welcome there (or are escorted by one that has Avalon's welcome). So even though Character X may have the ability to
planewalk, they still couldn't arrive in some destinations, because those destinations have access routes that are defined as the only entry points.

One of the reasons I favor this view is that it maintains the greatest flexibility for the players. There can be "A" Rhydin world wherein there are fixed and neighboring lands, but there can also be lands which appear to violate the rules of this world we call Rhydin. e.g. Perhaps the world Character B comes from has 3 moons. Rhydin, so far as I know, does not. Or as another example, there may be orcs from some other place where orcs are all
green, as opposed to perhaps a more Tolkienish world where orcs are the more immortal creatures he envisioned. (For those that don't know, Jake is not green.) In theory, the lands that become a part of Rhydin itself must give up some degree of individuality (and even authorial control) in order to conform to the rules that exist in Rhydin.
I also favor it because it, to some degree, helps protect the author of those lands. New Caithness is the property of Ian MacKenzie's player and the Caithness Trust. Just because there have been stories told here that take place in New Caithness, did not mean that the player wished to give up control/ownership of his creation to AOL or the FFGF which owns Rhydin.
Gothmorda is this way for me. I perceive it as the product of my own creativity and if placing it physically in Rhydin means giving up control/ownership of my creation, it's something I am unwilling to do. I'm perfectly happy to share the setting, but I don't wish anyone to make assumptions that contradict my view.

...But I am getting way off track...

For me it's always been sufficient that the Orc Lands from whence Jake came be somewhere to the "north of Rhydin towne." If it needs to be more detailed or fixed than that, I'm certainly open to discussion about it.

I think I forgot to mention something.

This should all be finished by the end of March. So, any help you need, feel free to ask myself or anyone else who could give you a hand, but if you do want to get involved, it should be as soon as possible.

To defend some of the whiners out there, I didn't know when I first stepped in what the heck modifiers were, or what Jade vs Glass might mean to even ask him uhm.. "can you go easy? It's my first time... "

However, even to this day when I've fought many duels, I *still* don't really understand what the heck my opponent just did when he flailed, moved to the right, but didn't, then kicked, but didn't and instead hit me with a punch. My luck? I've got the callers who finally just say the points and *then* I know what the hell happened.. and I'm good.

I think that it's all personal. As for me? I'm surprised that I've not been fancied to death as when I get into a duel it's one of those.. "Hey, wanna fight?" "Ya, call it in". I never stop to go -hey? What rank are you?- Therefore if someone modifies me to death, well.. it's my fault for jumping into the fight in the first place.

If people want to whine about others using modifiers on them, all I have to say is that it takes two to tango. If they whine, the only way I'll accept the whine is if at first they asked what rank, and specifically asked them NOT to use modifiers.. then and only then I'll defend them. It's their first fight? Alright, they didn't know.. swallow, and go on to the next fight, and this time ASK.

It's not a hard thing to learn really... you just open yer mouth and say "hey.. I don't know what yer doing, please don't." As for me? I'm still going to do my usual.. "Hey? Wanna fight?" And go on about my way.

Now.. question.. Does anyone have the map of Rhydin they could send me? ::hopeful look::

Just a note: Deuce is leaving. I'm not. If you read Kailyne's post, you should be able to figure out why before reading mine (which I'm writing right after this). I wonder what the new ref will be like....

Rather than e-mailing everyone, I'm just going to post this up on the Board. I write this to apologize to each and every patron of the DoF for not getting the standings out on time the past few weeks. Real life and some personal situations have kept me rather busy recently and continue to do so, but I can't really use that as an excuse. I've let my responsibilities to you slide and I apologize for that. Thank you
all for your patience with me; I assure you it's greatly appreciated.
I have just completed the standings and with luck they will be up before dueling time tonight. If you feel there's an error in your record, let me know and I'll do my best to go over the reports again. I'll make more of an effort to remain prompt in the future.

You'll never be able to top my record of two consecutive 6 week stretches without updated standings....

Hey folks. Due to some technical issues the Standings will be posted here until we locate new people to put them in the regular area. Sorry for the inconvenience(s).

~ News from the Outback ~

In an unexpected move, Falablah retires PathFinder and thus the Opal is up for grabs in a tournament to be held this upcoming weekend! Fala ends his career with a 55-00-00 record and enters the recordbooks as having broken the 50WoL barrier. The first 8 Emeralds to sign up will be entered and those following will be placed on a standby list in
case one of the original 8 cannot or does not attend. Good luck to those of you vying for the prize!
Another Emerald retirement to note is that of Bob Braxxx; his second time leaving the sport. The former Shadoweaver holder and winner of the Feet-First Tournament returned to the Duel of Fists as a Glass and fought his way back in to the Emerald rank. For you statisticians, his lifetime WoL record stands at 58 at the time of this retirement.
This past weekend witnessed another Opal, FireStar, change hands! Whether you know him as Alex or Avery or both, you'll now see him holding the Opal as he defeated Harris in the best 2 of 3 series under the watchful eye of Janella Vallonia. A big congratulations to Avery or to Alex, whichever he is!

Until next time; happy dueling!

New Duelers!

Please join us in welcoming the following folks to this cycle's standings! Watch as these patrons try to become the Emeralds, Opals, and even the Diamond of tomorrow!

Rookies and veterans join and rejoin the Duel of Fists roster so let's say hello to Dragen, Helthorne, Carnage669, XHavoickX, MikaelRhnr, AndreaThrn, Dare Elan, Raven5823, RJWinstn, Krusif, Methous45, Zen Black, and XerzesM.

Now, let's look at who advanced and got some new jewelry!

Jaycynda brawls her way up and into a Sapphire ring!
Dragen apparently wants to move up fast and debuts as a Jade!

Congratulations and well done everyone!

The Duel of Fists is held in "TheOutback" every Monday from 9-12 EST, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11pm-2am Eastern time and on Thursdays from 10-1 EST.
