The Beginnings of The New

Jeremy knew something was wrong. He had been staying in Andrew's house for quite a while now and never had he experienced what he had last night. No one would understand. No one would realize who he was or what he had been through. Andrew was gone. Completely. Or was he?

He felt something new and didn’t know where it came from. It was like someone or something had taken over his body. Last night, he became stronger; more aware. He wasn’t the usual kid people knew him as.

He had to get out. He had to leave and find somewhere where there were people. Where there were people who could tell him what was happening. The Outback was just that place. Andrew’s old friends were there. They would know what to do; what was going on.

Setting down his book on the nightstand, Jeremy slid off his bed and put his raggedy shoes on. He knew he was in charge of Andrew’s money, now, but never took advantage of it. He’d get new shoes soon, at least, that’s what he kept telling himself. Jeremy raced to the door and slid down the rail right to the front door. On the coat rack, his cloak sat and with one quick swoop swung it over his shoulders.

Jeremy took one look back at the mansion, not knowing that this would be the last time he would see it again. He blew out the lamp next to the door and opened the door. He hopped down the steps and immediately fell to the ground. There was a surge throughout his body that he had never felt before. It felt as if something was taking him over from within.

He got up and took a few steps forward before falling over again. This time Jeremy didn’t rise instantly. In fact, his body became like stone and began elongating. His legs started to grow longer as did his arms, hands and fingers. He curled up and buried his head in his hands, his body trembling from fear and shock.

There was an incredible gasp of breath before Jeremy stood up, now realizing he was not the same person he was minutes ago. He began to run and was surprised to find he was moving faster than he ever had. He entered the town and became much calmer. If anything was happening, others would see it and help him.

Coming out from an alleyway onto the main street, he was instantly stared at as if he was a freak of nature. Jeremy didn’t know what was going on until a small girl came up to him and looked up.

“Sir, are you Mr. Andrew Forcer?”

Jeremy stared at the girl, not knowing how to respond to this ridiculous question. Before being able to answer her mother rushed by and grabbed her before running down the street.

“I knew you would come back, Andrew.”

An old woman was sitting at her table, the same old woman Jeremy had seen talking to Andrew many times before. Jeremy just smiled and nodded just like Andrew had taught him. She smiled back and continued drinking her coffee.

Jeremy became incredibly confused as people walked up to him and bowed their heads, simply saying, “Mr. Forcer.”

Jeremy continued to walk to the Outback, taking on Andrew’s persona, not realizing that he actually was in Andrew’s body, though his mind was his own. He realized, however, that he would have to have the knowledge that Andrew did to take over his body. There would be someone who would know it wasn’t him. He knew he had to be careful.

After a brisk walk through the city, Jeremy reached the Outback. He knew Andrew was very smooth about entering the room, so he pushed one of the swinging doors aside softly and took a step forward, not realizing his life was about to change.

The door was open, but there was no one in the room. The smell of duels was in the air, but the seats were empty. Jeremy was confused, he thought there were always people in the Outback, either drinking or fighting, or even both. He walked in to the empty, dim-lit room and walked among the tables. Andrew had told him not to go near the rings, but he was old enough, now. He could take care of himself.

He went over to the bar and slid up onto a barstool as he looked over the Diamond wall. He recognized quite a few of the new Diamonds and smiled at their accomplishments. His face swiveled around to face into the bar and at that moment looked right into the mirror in front of him.

Jeremy did not see himself, but rather, his mentor. He opened his lips and Andrew opened his as well. Jeremy stared at his reflection for an hour before he started to notice a change in Andrew's hair. It began to slowly curl up, disappearing from its length and ending as a short crop on the top of his head, much more to Jeremy's own resemblence. Within seconds his face began to change from its long, thin structure to Jeremy's young face. His body
began to change back into Jeremy and within a minute, he was back to his youthful appearance.

There was a voice in one of the offices off from the main arena and Jeremy quickly dashed around the bar, sticking his head up just enough to see if anyone was coming. A few men walked past and through the doors, one flicking the final light off before leaving the Outback.

Jeremy dropped down behind the bar and sat on the ground, facing the cabinets. He was changing. He knew he could never show Andrew's face in here because he was dead. Or at least, that's what he thought. He didn't know when he was going to be Andrew or when he was going to be Jeremy, and the only way he could tell was if he looked in a mirror or someone recognized him. There was no way he could tell by looking at his own hands.

He would make sure, however, that he would not walk into the Outback as Andrew, for fear of other's reactions. Jeremy stood up quickly and inched his way back to the door, taking one look back at the rings before dashing out of the room.
