Protection from the shadows

::That night Zach went to sleep or at least He tried to. The only
thing He could think of was the heartbroken lady heading for Faerun
all by herself. He just couldn't fathom how she could feel such
devotion for one who had abandoned her and taken her child. She
definitely wasn't thinking too clearly at this time and would require
some protection, even if it was from a distance. He decided to take his
Clydesdale instead of his Arabian horse. It was always fun to him for
scum to attack and arrive near him a lot sooner than they had
anticipated. At a distance he looked like a midget on a normal size
horse. When they got close enough they discovered that He was quite
normal in size and that the Clydsdale could stomp the life out of them
and their horses. He always did like surprises. He really loved being
the one springing the surprise. He did want his three wolves to go with
him. It was obvious they wanted to go as well. They could always tell
when fun was to had. They are such sweet creatures when they love
you and so cold blooded when they don't. Many had discovered that
over the years. They had been many years with him. Two were very
old and graying but so young in their ways. He knew He would miss
them when they were gone.::
Then it is set! I shall watch over her from a distance! She does at least
need that right now.

::As Zachary begins to pack He thinks about this heart broken lady and
the pain she must be experiencing. All of the questions He had asked
in Rhydin about her and her husband had been met with blank stares. No
one had any idea that there was much trouble between them. They had
noticed they weren't spending time with each other in public. But as
they had said that never has much to do with what goes on when the
hearth is burning low and everyone else is asleep. They had been so
much in love and now all of a sudden in the span of a few weeks it was
over. So much pain and why was it so? Why would He hurt her like that?
Maybe He had some source of pain and wasn't dealing with it too well.
Many times in Zach's life He had run and hidden rather than deal with
it head on.::
And they call women the weaker sex? Oh ye of little brains! I guess I
better pack. I have been looking at all of my things for a while now
and they aren't packing themselves. Ahhh! Yes! My little pouch of
beeswax ye are better than gold for the kind of purchase I like!
::With that He throws the last of his belongings on Tiny's back and
lashes the long bow to the gear and rides off. The three wolves
trotted along playfully beside him. As they frolicked about they
sniffed the air and the horse followed them. Zach slowley drifted off
to sleep. From time to time He would open his eyes and view the
horizon for signs of life.::
What a God forsaken wilderness.
::His thoughts drift back to the broken heart He is chasing after.::
I guess I don't really care what happened between them at all. I just
know that she is heartbroken and not thinking too clearly. It is
obvious that she wants nothing to do with anybody right now. I will
make sure she isn't bothered in any way at all. Not even by me!
::The large black wolf named Judgement quietly watches Zach during
his brief diatribe::

After the shuttle trip to Faerun it took everyone a while to settle in to the old routine. The wolves had already picked up the scent and were on the trail again. The trip had cost a Kings ransom and fortunately He had that on him at the time. It was now a matter of catching up so He could watch over her. Tiny was in the center of the triangle of wolves and they were on their way to where ever the lady had gone. Judgment didn't need to sniff the
cloth that had belonged to the lady again. He actually acted insulted that the offer had been made to help refresh his memory. It was not necessary

Thwaapppp!!!!!!!!
I really do think that blood sucking insect followed me here from Rhydin.
He shall cause me no more problems now! I think I will turn in for the
night now! The three wolves took their positions and Tiny the Clydesdale
began munching away for the night.
Zach rolled over and laughed out loud and went to sleep.

Zach awakened the next day to the feel of Mercy's warm breath on his face.
Judgement and Thor were nowhere to be seen. Mercy put her tail level
to the ground put a slight curve at the end of it then looked to the north and a
low growel came from her throat. It was still dark and he had barely
gotten any sleep but He was off and on his way in no time. Mercy
silently led the way using the dry gullys as cover. Tiny came to a
stop as Judgement trotted up with his tail held almost straight up in
the air.
Nice of you to think we will win this one. You usually are right
though aren't you?
Zach followed on foot and Judgement led him to where there were three
drunk thieves all talking about the gold the fair lady must have on
her. They were getting ready to go to sleep but not before an argument
broke out between two of them.
"I gets the gold this time you got it last time. E got the gold the last
time before that now look at im all covered in armor. Really thinks
e's sumthin don't E?"
"You always cumplanin bout sumthin aren't ye? You got a bag
a silver that's wut you got an listen te ye still complainin."
"Both o ye shutup and git some sleep we'll hit er in the morning"

Zach smiled to himself. Greed and alcohol a really great mix at
times like this. He wrote a quick note on some parchment and put
it on the saddle. Mercy take Tiny to the lady and get her to where
she needs to go. Bring him back when she arrives and we will be
on your trail after we deal with this. He removed the long bow,
quiver and his pack. Mercy slowley moved off into the shadows with
Tiny quietly picking his way along the old river bed.
With that done He began to settle in for the wait. He allowed his
mind to go back to happier times and didn't allow himself to look
directly at his victims. At 2:30 in the morning he broke his trance
lifted the arrow with the small ball of beeswax on the tip. The arrow
was knocked and in flight in less than a few seconds. The arrow hit
the thieves armor right over a kidney and dug in. He went down
soundlessly except for the brief dull thud of the arrow impact on the
armor. As always the beeswax allowed the arrow tip a split second
longer to gain purchase on the steel plate.
He returned to his trance and washed what he had just done
from his mind. He carefully thought about something completely
different as he looked every where else once again. Creeping over
to the thieves as they slept he located the bag of silver and the bag
of gold. He very quietly switched them, each had the others bag now.
He removed an arrow from the quiver of one thief took his arrow
back from the dead thief and deftly slipped it in through the old hole.
Just for the fun of it he poured out two bottles of wine and laid them
next to the thief whos arrow he had used. The bow was placed right
behind the dead thief. Silently he crept back into the gully and slipped
away in the shadows.
As much as I would like to watch, I believe we need to get moving .
I can just hear it now. "You drunken idiot you shot him and
passed out?" " No I didn't!" "Oh so he shot himself in the back with your
bow?" "That's impossible!" "I know that's the point you idiot." "Are you
calling me a thief?" "Are you calling me a liar?"
What a fitting end! Let's get moving.
With that Zach and the wolf trotted silently into the night. Zach was still
smiling to himself when he caught his second wind.

After about an hour of running Zach stopped as the sun was just creeping up over the horizon. A brief inspection of the camp where the lady had stayed revealed that she had ridden away on the horse but she was being followed. Those that pursued her were on foot but heavily laden. They were just ahead of Zach but they would be moving slowly. A comparison of the impression marks by hand since there was no light, had revealed that they
would be very noisy and easy to follow. They were either stupid or clumsy. There could be nothing silent about their movements. They pounded their way down the trail and probably scared the life out of everything around them. They would also be diminishing their range because of the way they walked. They would tire very quickly.
These guys have to be unhorsed horsemen they sure don't know how to walk. A nice big fire at night too. They are used to big protected camps and lots of guards. It would also cause them to take off that heavy old armor at night being used to guards providing them ample warning of attack. They are like those I grew up with back in the technical world, that is the world I walked away from. The people living that way of life had no idea what
life was at all. Their environment was too sterile and codependent. An independent guy like me has no place in such a weak world. They have no idea what life really is do they Judgment. The large black wolf yawned at him and began wagging his tail when Zach shook his head at him. Too
cruel Judge! Too cruel! With that Zach grabbed the end of his massive muzzle and shook it. The tail wagging became a little more exaggerated but stopped as they began to move down the trail, keeping about twenty feet to the side of the trail now and moving very slowly. Let's continue on for a short distance and set up camp for the day.
As He backed off the trail He had done so backwards from a very rocky portion of the road and had lifted the grass and pushed it back into position with his bow. Finding a place near a small stream he placed his belongings on the ground and poured a handful of toasted grain into a cup along with some clean water. A piece of dried meat and off to work. He built a tripod of interlocking sticks about three feet high, four feet wide and eight
feet long. Sticks were then laid vertically along the length and smaller sticks were interwoven horizontally. A bed of leaves and grass was built up on the inside and compressed two or three times and
then the entire structure was buried in about four feet of leaves. The bed roll was laid out inside and He promptly went to sleep after drinking the tasty mixture in the cup. Yech! At least it will keep me alive! I think I need to kill something soon and eat it.
Judgment trotted off to a nearby meadow and hunted the Faerun version of field mice and came back to the small hut after he was sated.

About two hours before sunset Zach awoke and started a fire using his
piston and cylinder. That was one gadget that always drew a perplexed
look from strangers. In places where technical civilizations had risen and
fallen there were always useful remnants of what once was. The diesel
cylinder, boomerang and many other items were just such enigmas. It
weighed the same as the standard fire drill it was faster and less bulky.
Most of the time He could get one to last a couple of years or so before
replacing it. It usually sprang a leak at the worst of moments and
then it was back to a fire drill. That only took fifteen minutes or so
to set up. Having the cylinder helped save fifteen minutes everytime
he needed a fire and that counts when hunting.........this was
definitely hunting. He boiled some water and fixed some of the yummy
grain mixture and some dried meat. When the water had cooled
adequately He poured it into his containers and sealed them for later.
As the bladders were sealed all of the air was expelled so as to cut
down on noise.
After he gathered his things together and spread his hut all over
the woods. He smiled to Judgement and said "Lets go! Peasant season is
open!". Zach carefully concealed their passage by lofting the grass as
they worked their way back up to the trail by a different route. With
that done the two took off at a trot down the trail. At times they
walked but generally they trotted as they did have a bit of catching
up to do. At about four in the morning Judgement began to slow and
sniff the air and ground more regularly. Thirty minutes later the fire
could be seen by the side of the path, it was big as expected. These
guys all seem to develop an inflexible way of thinking. An experienced
officer is usually the only thing that can make them change. From a
distance it was obvious there wasn't any such thing as an officer with
them...good or bad.
As he had waited for his water to cool He had examined the tracks
left by the soldiers. There were six of them and that might pose a
problem so He knew extreme caution was in order. They had made pretty
good time considering they weren't used to walking and had all of that
armor on them plus the sundry items He himself had. Two hundred yards
away from them He eased off into the woods and set everything down.
Judgement and Zach circled the camp from several hundred yards out
making note of the locations of all six soldiers. He had left
everything except his Damascus steel scimitar with the extended guard
back in the woods. They had left one sentry standing and he was
sleeping against a tree standing up. He probably figured if anyone
woke up they wouldn't notice his head bobbing in an attempt to fight
off sleep. Lying down on the job would get him lynched however. This
guy wasn't used to guard ing anything.
That bobbing head was more temptation than Zach could handle. He
gave Judgement the down signal and began to creep up behind him. Very
carefully placing the out side front part of his feet on the ground
first and then setting the heel down. All of this was done very slowly
with a rolling action any thing that might break and give him away was
detected this way. The deep woods have lots of little alarms and He
didn't want to trip one. After what seemed like forever he was right
behind him. The guard had a regular rhythm set up down up down up.
Fortunately his helmet was fastened just in case. Old habits die hard.
When his head went down for the final time Zach reached up and grabbed
the front of the helmet and used the mans own reflexes to pull the
head all of the way back. The muffled popping sound meant he had done
it. Before the reflexes could start his flopping Zach was gone. Not
enough sound was made by the guard to wake the tired soldiers and they
slept on.

As the sun rose later that morning Zach moved into position and
waited two of the soldiers were laying back to back. They were
dispatched with one arrow from the long bow. Then He awaited the rude
awakening the survivors were doomed to experience. He had also moved
up the trail quite some distance at this time so He could make a grand
and innocent entrance. When they awoke it was noticeable that they
were upset about something. Zach just couldn't figure out what that
might be though. He and justice set off down the trail towards the
unhappy three some, whistling as He went. By the time He arrived in
the camp the soldiers were really upset. He was wearing a rather long
sleeved shirt and the scimitar was in his left hand with the blade
going up towards his shoulder. Nothing was visible to the soldiers.
All they noticed was the bouquet of flowers he had in his right hand.
Did you see anybody on the trail this morning? No! Just me! Why?
Someone shot two of our buddies with one arrow and broke his neck in
the night. Zach looked at the two soldiers and moved closer to the
other three. I always heard you guys stuck together but....that is
taking it a little too far don't you think?
Suddenly the three soldiers who were right in front of him drew their
massive swords and held them over their head as they looked at Zach.
The one in the middle demand to know who he was. All three were
standing directly in front of him with swords over their heads and
ready to swing.
Zach offered the flowers to the soldier in the middle. Why are
you trying to hand me those stupid flowers instead of answering my
question? Because I think you have a cute butt. The two soldiers on
the left couldn't believe what He had just said and looked at each
other. The one on the left was looking at the guy in the middle. Their
muscles had relaxed just a bit and Zach sprang forward. He went
between the two on the left with his sword held horizontal. As he
passed the one on the left He turned so the blade bit in all the way
to his spine. Before he had collapsed the blade had been passed to the
right hand and was rotated in a sharp stab into the middle soldiers
back. Zach spun around and grabbed his hair and the remaining soldiers
response was wasted on his own buddy. Before he could recover
psychologically from what he had just done Zach had cut through his
collar bone and he dropped as well.

Zach stood back and viewed his handy work. His last victim was still breathing but not moving around too much except to get away from him. Why are you chasing the Lady? The King wants her and I don't know why! It has something to do with a child I believe. Ransom perhaps? I don't know! I already told you that! Does that hurt as much as it looks like it does? Yes! Oh! Just curious! Have a nice day! With that Zach took off down the
trail. The soldier collapsed as He left and expired.
He set up camp and went to sleep much later in the day off of the trail as always. When He awoke the next day He could hear Tiny plodding through the woods toward him. How are you doing old boy? Mercy and Thor were busy greeting Judgement grabbing each other's muzzle growling and prancing about. Tails were held at varying levels based on where they fit in the pecking order. Zach let everybody rest for the day and set off for where the
Lady had gone later that night.
When He did locate her, things were as He expected them to be. She didn't look too happy, but she was safe except for that King that needed to be slowed down a bit. Maybe I can buy her some time by dealing that king a devastating blow. His strength is his cavalry and I shall turn that into his weak point. I do believe it is time to drop in on him. Picking on
women and children has always annoyed me.
He looked at all of his animal friends and exclaimed "Akh! Kogdadjye okhoetik yetanovitjah travit!".The three wolves knew what that meant and began wagging their tails. Zach and the three wolves began the joy howl it was time for a hunt.

Zach finally made it to the kingdom if it could actually be
called that. It was more like a wannabe kingdom or warlordship
of sorts. Who ever was running this mess was in desperate need
of help and Zach offered to help in the stables if they would
shoe his horse for him. He cleaned out the stalls very nicely for
them. He even scraped the nasty old nitrogen bearing crystals
off of the lower ends of the timbers and into a bag for later use.
After a couple of days He had a pretty good batch built up. All
of the hay was a legume type of hay bearing lots of nitrogen in
and of itself. Zach realized all he needed was water but He
wanted to do it in a big way. More is better!........He laughed
to himself.
By the end of the week he had gathered cotton cloth in large
amounts and a fair amount of lamp oil. It was about time to
leave and they seemed to be getting ready to do something any
way so it was time to strike. That night He dug down into the
hay and loaded manure, the crystals, water and cotton soaked
in lamp oil. After He had done that in numerous places He
packed the hay in nice and tight. Then He got on his horse.
It was time to leave for Rhydin immediately and He didn't
know how much time He really had.
Several hours later and just before sunrise Zach looked back
toward the direction He had just come from. Gosh it looks like
it is really heating up over there. I'm sure they got the horses
out of there but I know they didn't have time for all of the wagons
and riding tack. Such a shame! He watched for an hour or so until
He was sure the fire was about out. I doubt they will be following
anytime soon. He was on the shuttle a few hours later. I guess
that was a wasted trip. I came back without her but I have plenty
of stories to tell and I guess that will have to do. Stories can buy
a lot of drinks that much is for sure.
