To all those who travail upon the steps that lead downward to the Arena...
Though many have duelled within and without the rings, there are even more that dwell without. As Me bro (Tass) stated, once one enters the Arena, it matters not how long one has been here, nor does their rank or title. History proves as Drake once told me that annah duellah can defeat anothah on annah given day or moment.
In other words, ifn ya kin make th "higher" ranks within th Duels, it mattahs not whethah ya be a Duke or commonah, tis yer actions within th communtiy tha mattahs most.

I don't care what ya' post about most of the other people around here but I don't wanna be lumped in on every damn post there is. Billy this...Billy that, no wonder I got an attitude. People like Ken wouldn't know me from Adam on the street, so why does he use me as an example? I find it funny that some of you talk as if your already retiring some of us "old fogies" and that you'll honor us in our dotage when yer still in yer duelin' prime. Fact
is I've outlasted about 200 duelers who've said the same line, I'm here, they ain't.
6 months? That's spit in the wind son, give me a yell when ya' been active in the DoS for two years or so then ya' can talk about retirin' us oldtimers...but by then you'll be one yerself.
Ya' see....when people like Huma and Uzie talk about old and new duelers I get the chuckles goin'. Ya' young turnips call them old school while they're actually pretty darn new by comparison ta' some.
It's all a matter of degrees kids. It ain't just white and black, there's a whole mess of shades of grey when talkin' about duelers...try and be a little more careful about ballin' everyone inta' one group.

Percival recently asked me my opinion on this debate about the "old school" versus the "new school" to be included in that piece he is referring to. Needless to say. I am not here to argue whether certain people can be offensive or not, but merely to say that the what many of you consider to be the difference between "new" and "old schoolers is probably a bunch of ignorance and hypocrisy. There are rude, obnoxious, arrogant, snide, and vulgar
people in both the new and the old school. Also, there are nice, honorable, kind, and friendly people in both groupings as well.
Now, exactly what does make the difference? Well, frankly I'd like to ask how many of you were around to see the invention of the Baronial Rings? Do you remember when fancies gained an advantage whether they were successful or not? Frankly, this is what I see to be the dividing line between the two. If you do not remember before there was the title of Baron, then you are not "old school" no matter what mentality you have. Many would disagree
with me on this point, but that is the nature of life. One does not throw away their "newness" when they acquire a certain rank or a title. I can think of dozens of highly respected duelists who have held numerous titles, including Overlord, who are by no means "old school". (Though they may seem it to the extremely new people) Of course, this is all relative, as "new" and "old" is subject to how long the person considering it has been around
themselves.
I mean no disrespect to those of you who are not "old school" by this definition, for a good number of my closest friends (and most of the people in the arena these days) do not fall under that classification. Also, I hope this does not cause any kind of angry debate, but I merely thought I'd point out a different opinion of what constitutes the difference between the two schools.

Nae only do I remember both, I recall the heated debates the changes wrought. Tis still some about who may also recall the days when, for a warlord to rise in rank, the warlord had but to best the warlord ranked no more than three ranks higher. A win in that dance of steel thereby acquired that warlords rank in a single test of the blade.

I would ask your indulgence for a bit of a ramble here upon these boards. There are those that stand opposed to change within these hallowed walls. There are also those insistent that these changes are essential to the growth of the community. the staunch defenders of the old ways to embrace those with ideals for the future. I would also ask those who see it time for change to respect the values of the former. Gondar, Me Monk, Falon, Xenograg kathu-Darelir , Juan Sanchez Villalobos Ramirez, and the others who paved the way to what we witness this day. How many here today know of the Ward of Gondar? How many know the plight of Prudence O'Shaunnsssy and the Cleric?
I implore the Old, teach them, and allow your traditions to flourish. The new, accept the teachings and show the respect that is deserved, then there will come a time for your own traditions to be taught to those that follow in your footsteps.

Sorry, had to get that out of my system.
Well, I'd planned to stay out of this discussion, but now feel it's time I stepped in a bit. Some of you know me, others do not. I've been here for about 6 months now and am proud to call myself a new-school duelist. My question is quite simple: How can anyone call six months, or a similar time period, a sufficient amount of time to make me an old-schooler?
Like it or not, Ken, Billy Ray Karnafexx is one of, if not the, best duelist to step within the rings. He's fought hard over the years that he has been here and deserves the recognition he has. He also deserves the right not to be used as an example by someone he most likely doesn't even know. By that reasoning, don't you think he's going to take a bit of offense to being mentioned by you?

I have to disagree with this. I'm currently ranked as a Warlord but am certainly not an "established duelist." However, within my first few weeks here, I was treated with nothing short of friendliness from the "old schoolers." If anything, they were more tolerant of me than many of the new school duelists were while I learned the ropes, so to speak.
When a person goes around stating that the old school seems to have a holier than thou attitude, my question is how were you acting when speaking with them? And frankly, how would you react if approached in this same instance after you've been here for the amount of time Billy Ray Karnafexx or Dalamar Ar'Daumon has been here? How would you like being mentioned in postings by people you don't know?

I use him as an example in general, as you seemed to think his "staunchiness," was how the old school duelists treated the new school. All I can say to this is that, if you believe this to be true, than you are the one who needs to stop going "campin or whatever it was you
were up to" and take a good look around at these people, for they are most definitely some of the best men and women you'll ever meet.

Well, I'd planned to stay out of this discussion, but now feel it's time I stepped in a bit. Some of you know me, others do not. I've been here for about 6 months now and am proud to call myself a new-school duelist. My question is quite simple: How can anyone call six months, or a similar time period, a sufficient amount of time to make me an old-schooler?
Like it or not, Ken, Billy Ray Karnafexx is one of, if not the, best duelist to step within the rings. He's fought hard over the years that he has been here and deserves the recognition he has. He also deserves the right not to be used as an example by someone he most likely doesn't even know. By that reasoning, don't you think he's going to take a bit of offense to being mentioned by you?

I have to disagree with this. I'm currently ranked as a Warlord but am certainly not an "established duelist." However, within my first few weeks here, I was treated with nothing short of friendliness from the "old schoolers." If anything, they were more tolerant of me than many of the new school duelists were while I learned the ropes, so to speak.
When a person goes around stating that the old school seems to have a holier than thou attitude, my question is how were you acting when speaking with them? And frankly, how would you react if approached in this same instance after you've been here for the amount of time Billy Ray Karnafexx or Dalamar Ar'Daumon has been here? How would you like being mentioned in postings by people you don't know?
