Collie,
Lupton had already planned to have Karen call before I chose an official. He imposed the rule that I choose the date and time, while he chooses the official, because of tradition.
Of course, I handled the challenge as I usually have; chose the caller and picked an appropriate time that fit everyone's schedule. Not only that, but I didn't (and still don't) even want to dignify his rather tasteless challenge by allowing him to pick the official.
But that's all I have to say for now. While I cannot force Lupton to allow Stormcrow to call, he can't force me to have Karen call. In short time, I will decide whether or not to accept Karen as the official.
Simply,

Does it really matter who Lupton chooses to officiate, Var? He is correct about the tradition of the challenger choosing the caller while the challenged chooses the time and place. Refusing his choice, to me, would appear to be a childish act.

You didn't get your choice, so you don't want him to get his. At least, that's how it will appear if you refuse Karen as a caller.

In closing, quit complaining and let Lupton have his caller. It is tradition, after all.

To all concerned.

As there was a request from the management for no staff member to place a missive upon the board unless it was directly related to a duel... Ms. Jansen, acting as my subsitute during my maternity leave, has asked me to post the following notice.

Baron Var, Warlord Lupton, Lord Evermeadow.

Rather than become involved in an arguement over precident and other such matters... I will withdraw myself from consideration for calling this challenge match.
I was surprised and flattered when the WarLord asked me, but I will not step into the middle of such an arguement. I am certain that my regular duties as well as my handling of the Standings during miss Bridgette's absense will keep me busy enough as it is.
My appologies to the WarLord.

Ms. Karen Jansen, Acting Standings Keeper.

Var,

I do understand your irritation over him chosing a caller, however, my point still stands regarding Stormcrow. It is my hope that you will be able to agree on a caller that will be there on time and perform his or her duties.

Oh goody.....

Hey guys...here's a revolutionary idea....

Challenge....the reason being the sake of winning a Baron's Ring...this is a sport, you know.

And no controversy. Just a good clean duel. Think you all could handle that?

Rix,

One simple point; if this is indeed tradition then I suggest we all batten the hatches when next OverLord challenge is made and the challenger announces whomever, he or she has chosen as caller. I lay fifty gold upstanding against anyone that Dal says it's his right to choice of place, time, and caller.

Quietly the gypsy watches, reading over the various missives. Coming across a few, she nods to herself, noticing one who has so often spoken wisely, and she smiles, a bit sadly.

With a soft breeze, she slips away, her opinions kept to herself on such matters, and posts nothing.

Live with it. If there be none ta ya satisfaction that ta Var can nae find, then me guess ya get used ta being a war lord.

Var,

tell ta Loopy ta go find some pants that are nae so tight. Ta Loopy lost in ta past, and if he decide ta dredge it up and give ya a headache, just tell him ta go sit in ta corner with his peer wins.

Rix,

Lupton refused Var's caller, so why is that not considered childish?

As a courtesy and no more, this is posted publicly as sent to the others on the mailing list:

I do not know what to say, really, but offer the opinion that the challenger should have some say in the matter. It does not matter why Lupton challenged, or what he said was his reasonings, he challenged.

When Percival challenged me, he used strong language and made quite clear his stance in regards to me. Should I take more insult than necessary and refuse him any say in scheduling the match? I do not think so. If we strip away all the motivations, whether we agree with them or not, the challenger had met a requirement in order to have the right to challenge and it takes consideration on all sides to meet the challenge.

I was very angry when Agrenish rudely set the time for his defense a mere few hours before and it was only by luck and dilligence that Var was able to meet at such short notice. I think this situation falls into that category, and it is ironic that it was Var to be inflexible to a challenger in this instance.

However, there is nothing in the rules that details who has what rights. It is my opinion that there should not be a rule. We are all adults and we should be able to come to an agreement, at the very least a compromise, without relying on rules to force us to a certain code or behavior. Tradition has been that the challenged sets the time and place and the challenger gets to choose the caller. I think this is a reasonable guideline; however,
flexibility should be considered. I believe I would be out of line to set an unreasonable time for my challenger. I also do not think anyone needs any sort of acceptable reason for refusing a caller -- no matter what tradition has been. I may simply not like a caller, perhaps I think the caller rude or incompetent, or maybe I do not like their hair, and that should be reason enough -- to demand more is unecessary. I do not have to justify
not liking someone well enough to have them call my duel -- something that should be very important to me.

Var, I understand your outrage and insult; however, I do not think this justifies inflexibility. Lupton, I admire your regard of tradition; however, there is no way to enforce a tradition. Enforced traditions are no more than rules.

Set the time and the place and find a caller and meet the challenge. Hopefully, the both of you will be involved in the planning. I think that is how it should be, tradition or no.

These are only my thoughts and I mean no insult to anyone.

Thank you for reading this far,

Morgan du Cornwall

Precisely. You gentlemen need to compromise. Quite simply, Lupton has decided that Stormcrow is unsuitable and Var has decided that he will not accept Lupton's unilateral choice. Fair enough on both sides I suppose. Except that both sides have chosen to make this into an issue. You are both grown men, one a Baron one a former Baron. Be grown men.
Compromise. Meet, talk, and agree on a caller. Or is that too hard for the both of you? You both have the same tendency to mistake your pride for your honor. Are you both doing that now? Think about your reasons for wanting your own choices in callers, and your reasons for this bickering. Then ask yourselves why. Then make a decision.

To be perfectly honest, Karen happened to simply been the first official I'd spoken with. I'm not sure why the community believes I was bent on her, but rather my wish was to *not* have Stormcrow call.

There are two or three more referees I will be speaking with in the next few days. I'm sure one of them will be fine.

As a side note, I really and whole-heartedly desire that Percival would cease his psuedo-fatherly and "morally superior" postings when he truly has not a single idea of the mind he's insulting. Maybe I should have asked Santa for that wish...

::smiles seeing the whole fight about a caller::

One thing,
Does it matter who calls the match? Would the caller cheat for who ever wanted him/her?

Just some questions.
