Collie,as I understand it, after the match was deemed forfeit, Jeff and Huma dueled to decide whether Jeff would keep his ring or Huma would withdraw his challenge. Huma cannae rescind tae now as the duel is forfeited. He can refuse to press it and accept the his own forfeit if the council orders a rematch. I donae see why there is so much anger over this honor duel. The agreement between them was reached and now we
shall see what comes of it when the council reaches a final decision on the matter. Please, all of you. Let us stop the bickering and get beyond this. I consider ya all a family, as I have none left. Dinna feud oe'r things tha' cannae be changed, fight to change tha' which can be.

===
To all..

This is likely this last I shall state on the matter out of respect for Laird Seamus MacDonnaugh, whom I call friend and deeply respect.

I haven't questioned Dal's actions or integrity in this matter once, yet I am called upon to answer for my animosity towards him. He is well aware of my feelings regarding him as are those that were among the membership of the Duels of Swords, one year ago in September. I never made any secret of the why. Dal has every right to cast this at my feet, but as to a few others who speak of paramours and past daliances they do not. Dalamar has had the good
taste to not bring up that part of the matter. I have never lied to him regarding my view and he would likely be the first to admit the he knows I will say what I feel needs saying to his face and not behind his back.

One simple point... the question of my loyalty to Lord Draven Altruis who is presumed deceased came up. Love is a bond that is not severed by death. The death of Dalamar's own father may cause many of you to reflect upon those you have lost. Did your love die with them? I would hope not.

If Dalamar can count on the support of those who swore fealty to him when they took their baronies then there is no question as to the outcome. Jeff's earlier statement of wanting things to be without a shadow of a doubt leads me to believe there is something wrong.

I did not ask for miracles. I asked for the Council to be allowed to to its job.

Collie

A few notes from the histories, etc. Food for thought.

13th ring was retired by Sir Leo Cassius Pride and put up as a prize for a tourney. He tried to reclaim it later. The answer was no from Helix. (posted by Leo)
---
12th ring

Next to challenge the Baron was a Warlord called simply Clutch, but he misunderstood the time given for the match and never showed. The matter was turned over to the Barons Council, who decided that Roland would retain the ring by forfeit.

----
11th

However, Baron Darkness himself never appeared for those duels, and was declared in forfeit of his ring. The matter was turned over to the Baron's Council to decide.

After several days debate, durring which the Baron himself only came towards the end, it was decided he would be stripped of his ring and Warlord Evasion would face a Council-appointed Baron for the 11th. Should he fail against the defender, G'nort would have his chance.
---
Ring 10

No recorded incidents
--
Ring 9

Zen held the ring for only a month before being challenged by Daegarth Mithmellon, who was determined to reclaim the ring he called his own. Complications arose when they failed to set a date for the challenge and when one seemed to be set, neither showed. After Zen again failed to respond to challenge, the first-ever Barons Council was convened to settle the matter.

The council elected to strip Zen of the ring and to have Daegarth face another of the current Barons. If he won, he would become the 7th holder of the 9th ring. The Baron he faced was Adeena Maeax, the longest standing Baron and one of two tied for the most title defenses at the time. Adeena was victorious in the match and the ring was then placed back in the of the DoS Officials.
--
Ring 8
(Intervention of the coordinator)
The 5th to wear this ring was Ulath Fici. One of the orginal nine barons, Ulath returned from a long retirement to fight in a warlord tournament and take this ring as his prize. Ulath, however, was in the tournament for sport and competition, rather than glory or titles. It was his wish to give the ring and title to the warlord Simini. His wish was denied by Kalamere Ar'Din, Coordinator of the sport.

===
Ring 7

This ring was first held by Ulath Fici, otherwise known as Dark Axe. Ulath held the ring for just over 2 and a half months, during which he made a successful defense against Juan Sanchez Villalobos Ramirez. Ulath lost the ring when he mysteriously vanished from Rhydin. After failing to arrive at the arena for a full cycle his ring was placed as a prize in the next Warlord Tournament.

--
The 7th ring was one of 3 that were prizes in the tournament. This one went to Dirk Random who became the 2nd holder. Dirk was challenged immediately for the ring by Athlstan. Like Ulath before him though, Dirk vanished from RhyDin and never answered the challenge.

Athlstan took his position as a Baron, naming his position "the Misbegotten Seat," as he had defeated no one to gain it and he had no ring to show.
(The above is the infamous incident where Kairee was given the ring.)
===
6th Ring

Adeena Maeax

The 5th challenge would have been from Sau Bau, but Sau was ruled to have forfeit the match.
==
5 Ring

No incident
--
4th ring

Shade was the first duelist to hold the same Baron's ring twice.... he's also the only baron to forfeit the same ring twice. The first time was to Lupton. Lupton took the ring and became the 4th to wear it, but as a man of honor he allowed Shade to immediately challenge him for it when he returned three weeks later. Shade won back the ring.

The 6th holder of this ring was Phlag. He gained the ring when Shade 9 again failed to answer a challenge. Unlike Lupton, Phlag never had the chance to prove himself against Shade. To make up for it, Phlag convinced a friend of his, Duke Leto of Covington, to challenge him. Phlag won the match and further proved himself by defending a second time against Jo Kicklen Elbinknyght.

Roughly 10 months later, Shade 9 made another appearance. Shade issued challenge for the ring, but then vanished before the match could be fought. Lady Helix Deverrey Girvin, the DoS Coordinator, stepped in to declare Phlag the victor by default.

Phlag was hardly to be seen after that, however. He disappeared from the realm, and was not seen or heard of again for almost a year. It is unknown what became of this esteemed duelist durring his long absence. The DoS officials claimed the ring, only nine days short of what would have been Phlag's one-year anniversary as Baron.
--
(Included because Beka had suffered a grievous loss and still appeared for her challenge )

Knowing she'd be difficult to reach, Beka named Knight Durandal, her husband,as her Second to answer challenges for her and notify her on the fronts.

When Huma Dragonbane challenged, Durandal was forced to respond, for Beka was currently behind enemy lines. While delievering the news of her challenge, Durandal was struck down by an arrow and killed... so it was a mourning Baroness that faced her opponent. The match went quickly in the Warlord's favor and he became the twevlth holder of the ring; repeating Beka's score of 5-1.
----
Ring 3

Darkness's first attempted defense was one of the most controversial in Duel of Swords history. The Warlord Sartan was the one to challenge the Loyal Baron. Failing to officially respond to the challenge within the first week, Darkness was forced to wait as the matter was turned over to the Council of Barons for a final decision. Thinking that the Council would decide for the two to duel the match anyway, Darkness met Sartan in the ring before the
Barons had made their final decision, a match that Darkness won. The Duel of Swords Coordinator, Lady Helix Girvin, was quick to void the bout and give the Council more time to make a final decision. The Barons were deadlocked in their decision, three voting for stripping the ring from Darkness, three voting for a rematch, and two others abstaining. The tie-breaker came from Overlord Ar'Daumon, who chose to let the two fight a rematch. In
their second contest, Sartan was able to overcome the Baron and take the ring in a 5 - 3 contest that lasted 8 rounds. Sartan was quick to announce his allegiance and keep the Third Baron's Ring Loyal to the Overlord.

Collie,

I disagree with the vast majority of your argument, however I write at this point only to cast a bit of light upon the reason Helix did not accept the recision.

A challenger who withdraws holds intact his right to challenge for the remainder of the cycle and is allowed to retain his peer wins. Once a challenge has been "met" however, that option no longer exists. As Helix has explained, she considers this challenge to have have met. Granted, this is a poor choice of words, as Helix herself recognizes and may one day change, but the phrase itself has been interpretted several times before.

As the challenge had gone this far and had been kicked to the council, Helix did not feel justified in simply handing Huma back the right to challenge.

Collie, Var didn't find any flaw, Var just hasn't been around long enough.

Var,

My first quote refers ta when I was 2nd ta Marius in his challenge ta Kaprielle. He was unable ta attend fer one reason or another and I pressed ta duel in his stead. Helix argued with me, and ruled I could not.

My second quote refers ta Collie not understandin' DoS is more dan just a book of rules and people playin' a sport. But I'm tired of respondin' ta Collie, she's like a broken record.

Now I'll respond ta ya. I won't begin ta cover da insult ya pay me by insinuatin' I might have gone back on me word just because Huma chose ta. I will however touch upon my anger in yer overlookin' da risk and importance of my duel of honor. It would seem Var unless ya have no respect fer what I stood up fer on October 14th. Maybe its because I wasn't standin' up fer someone ya care about. Have ya ever stood up fer a friend Var? Have ya ever
stood up ta defend Noelle? How would ya feel if someone told ya what yer doin' is worthless and a waste? Maybe ya haven't stood up fer anythin' in yer life, ever. Maybe ya always just back down and hope no one will insult and flame ya. I really don't fear da consequence if what I do is honorable and good. If ya have stood up fer somethin' in yer life, please analyze it, and tell me how ya would feel if another said it didn't mean anythin'.

Final note ta Collie,

<<Why should Helix have to entertain discussion? Are you saying her decisions mean nothing? Because if not.. then maybe it's time for everyone to reconsider their participation in this sport.>>

Because its *our* sport. Its not da Duel of Helix. If she's gonna play god with da rulebook and no one has a say in anythin' so be it. It will *never* be time fer *everyone* ta reconsider participation in da sport. If *everyone* was upset with a rulin' it would be time ta reconsider who is coordinator.

Jeff,

I really must say, the idea of Var backing down just because someone might flame him is fairly ludicrous. Var and I have had our share of disagreements on the boards. I would even say that he was wrong in most of his posts. But that he lacks courage? He says what he believes, every time, and stands pat. Sometimes he gets a little carried away and says things that he shouldn't. But this is because of an excess of zeal, not a lack of courage.

>I won't begin ta cover da insult ya pay me by insinuatin' I might have gone
>back on me word just because Huma chose ta.

I never said you would, Jeff. I just said that if you did, the council would have no power in removing the ring from you, thus the council should not remove Huma's right to challenge.

>I will however touch upon my anger in yer overlookin' da risk and importance
>of my duel of honor. It would seem Var unless ya have no respect fer what I

This is crossing the line, Jeff. I was speaking hypothetically how it would be handled if you did go back on your word.

I believe I have already covered why I chose to allow a rematch, and I won't repeat myself again and again. However, I will say this: I don't like those duels of honor. They're duels which force someone to do something they wouldn't normally do. The true honor duels we should have are honorable duels fought by two opponents, with mutual respect.

>Because its *our* sport. Its not da Duel of Helix. If she's gonna play god >with da rulebook and no one has a say in anythin' so be it. It will *never* >be time fer *everyone* ta reconsider participation in da sport. If >*everyone* was upset with a rulin' it would be time ta reconsider who is >coordinator.

Someone takes the reigns, Jeff, to maintain order. If there's nobody "playing God with the rulebook", then why have a rulebook to keep order of things? A coordinator, the officials, and the rules are here to not only keep order, but to keep people from doing whatever they desire without consequence.

This is all I'm saying, with this subject. As I have been making an effort to keep this board mud free, I am finding it difficult as two barons perpetually question my honor.

The commoner pauses, a slight twinkle in her sea blue eyes. Taking up the quill she pens a note tacking it to the corkboard.

Colleen,
I see thou hast obtained a dictionary. How very nice for thee, though I admit some wee startlement, what with thine great age and travels, thou hast nae in past been addressed in this romantic, refined and genteel language. It nae hast the soft burr of the auld tongue, yet dost brush softly against most of refinement.

I am quite certain I made no comment that wouldst be construed as judgmental with regard to thine relationship with Lord Altruis. Mine apology unto thee if thou felt thineself so judged. Thou art most certes permitted to conduct thine affairs in any manner thou wishes. Indeed, thou hast nae inquired of the "content" with regard to Lord Altrius' seeking out my company. Thine curiosity is evident, for why else wouldst comment upon this. Let
it not be said that I wouldst not wish to satisfy thee upon this matter.

T'was indeed Draven Altruis upon many occasions didst pursue my company, well knowing I was enciente, and that I remained faithful to my darling husband. His arrogance knew no bounds including an incident whereby he didst cast aside his Baron's ring upon a table in the basement -- indulging himself nae doubt in one of his usual temper tantrums -- eschewing to retrieve it.

He then departed the cavern, taking no heed to the possibility it might fall into the hands of brigands, thieves and other such rabble that upon occasion frequent the cavern. Witness the purloining of the former Baron, Billy Ray Karnafexx's sap gloves -- returned unto my hands by he that absconded with them with the declaration that he was merely holding them for safekeeping, adding that he felt he was no longer able to see them safe -- but I
digress.

Taken aback at such callousness, I retrieved the ring, offering it to the Lord Dalamar for safekeeping. M'lord ArD'aumon properly declined accepting it. I returned the ring to the Baron upon our next meeting.

There came a day when Lord Altruis' arrogant and unseemly behavior became intolerable. Upon that day, he didst strike me a blow to my midsection, this mere days following the birth of my youngest child, Laenith. Thou canst surely understand, I would hold no respect whatsoever for one so unable to control his temper that he would strike a woman. Perhaps he found thee more amenable to his atrocious behavior, for it was then he didst seek out thine
company, having been firmly spurned by myself as either friend or protector.

I shall take note of thine exception to the use of the genteel and polite form of address. Would thee prefer I address thee by thine title ast Duchess of Navarra, the use of the name as thee sign thine missives, to whit: Colleen MacLead-Lasher, or wouldst prefer the use of thine full name? I do ponder when thee may have heard me address Dame Casyria, tis I have nae lain eyes upon the old woman years.

Ast to none questioning Madame Helix, the comment has been made, by Jeff I do believe. The fact is, Madame Helix and Huma spoke quietly and none, e'en those standing close by had a chance to "question" the lady before her precipitous ruling.

Var, are you kidding? If an umpire calls somebody out because they were only half way to first when the first baseman steps on the bag one time, and then the umpire declares a batter out because he doesn't like the way he's chewing his tobacco the next time... does that mean somebody who thinks the umpire shouldn't have the right to make that decision about the gum wrong because they agreed with the first call but not the second? Does it even occur
to you how idiotic that sounds? Get a clue, then make intelligent posts. I feel dumber for even having been near the paper with your thoughts on it. Have a nice day.

Jona,

I am aware of the language, I simply prefer to not be addressed in that manner. Use my name as you always have, polite term or not, for reasons of my own I wish not ta be referred to in that manner. I know a bit of the French language. Never make assumptions for why someone objects simply because you know not their reasons for doing such.

For example, were I to refer to a friend from England as Sassanach which means English person. It would be up to them ta take the simple meaning and infer that I mean insult which is often done by Scots and Irish.

Your appology on that count is accepted.

As to Draven's arrogance, lass, you're speaking ta the choir. I knew more than the arrogance, I knew the man hidden behind, yet, I did not.

Now Collie luv, ta Huma be faced with a choice. He could chose ta move ta match ta another time, after which ta Dal be found; if he could be found. Or he could chose ta push for ta forfeit. As ya well know, he chose ta latter; an act that gave him a chance of snatching ta crown without ever unsheathing a blade. -Summer

Huma had no reason to try an reschedule, Summer. He already agreed to meet Dalamar at a time of Dalamar's choosing. Why should Huma reschedule when he fulfilled his obligation to his challenge? He met his end of the challenge Contract. Asking for the council to choose is a right decision and one that the council has ruled on in regards to challenges to Barons, one Dalamar has been very quick to condemn as being disrespectful of the Duel of Swords
and the rank one seeks. Those I believe are the Overlord's words.

Ta day I can nae make a private challenge regarding me honor without having some official tell me what I can and can nae duel on, is ta day I quit ta sport.

This duel was nae about ta passing of crowns and capturing of Baron's ring. It be about what each man willing to walk away from in ta name of his beliefs. It be ta truest since of ta spirit of ta DoS.-Summer

You may do what ever you wish Summer, but why should your honor duel be considered by an offical body if it is not under the auspices of the offical rules?

Because it's *our* sport. -Jeff

Ast to none questioning Madame Helix, the comment has been made, by Jeff I do believe. The fact is, Madame Helix and Huma spoke quietly and none, e'en those standing close by had a chance to "question" the lady before her precipitous ruling. -Jona

NEITHER is it the Duel of Dalamar or the Duel of Barons. One should stop to consider that they have agreed with the council stripping Warlords who did not appear for their scheduled challenges, and barons loose their ring for the same offense. If Dalamar does NOT arrive for the Duel it IS a forfeit. How can we say it is a forfeit for Clutch but not for Dalamar? Is the overlord EXEMPT from the rules or should that individual EMBODY the
rules and therefore stand subject to each of them? Personally, it does NOT matter if Dal looses the crown, the Duel of Swords will NOT stop because Dalamar does not hold the crown. Just as it did not stop when Kalamere lost the title yet no one cried for blood when he lost yet you would you say he was less honorable a dueler or lesser than Dalamar? The DoS and the Overlordship is larger than *ANY* one person.

As fer Helix's decision, she's coordinator, not god. She didn't entertain any discussion on it, she ruled and left, period.

Have ya ever stood up fer a friend Var? Have ya ever
stood up ta defend Noelle? -Jeff

Jeff, I tried to give you a subtle warning, now let me be very clear. My wife has been supervisor of this sport for over two years, longer than *ANY* other. You yourself have come to her office more than once seeking her graces and have you EVER been denied? To begin to question her judicious decisions AFTER you have sought her favor time and time again not only angers me, I consider it an attack on my wife and the mother of my children. Rest
assured I am not above defending my family with great prejudice. Remember what one has done for *you* in the past before you hurl insults at a fair and correct decision. Mind each of you that has gone to Helix with a gripe or complaint, how often has she shown you that back of her door over her well timed and considered decisions weighing all options and seeing all sides and finding a fair and just ruling. You can disagree with the decision should
you choose, but mark the area where the rules start that most precious person in my world begins.

The thing that still upsets me is that it seems that there is a double standard here, when Clutch was deemed in forfeit for being an hour late to meet Baron Roland, where was the cries of foul because he was stripped of his peer wins for being incorrect in what time to arrive? To indicate that Dalamar means more to the sport than Gondar, Athlstan, Kalamere, or any other that has held the crown, I find to be devoid of sound reasoning.

Ta be blunt Brian, just because someone can do something, do nae mean he should. It be in ta Huma's hands at that moment, and ta Huma did choose ta try ta finagle ta crown with evoking ta rules. Of course he can do it Brian, it be right there in ta rules...but then we get to ta finer point; why should he?

>>>>>You may do what ever you wish Summer, but why should your honor duel be considered by an official body if it is not under the auspices of the official rules? - same guy as above<<<<<

So ya nae think that the Helix already be working too hard as it is? It seems from me brief perusal of ta rules, which I freely admit as being brief, that ta challenge rules most pertain to ta taking of a ring or a crown. In short, I duel ta either get meself a Baron's ring, or I duel ta keep ya from taking mine. Although many a match has been fought for and with honor, I be ashamed ta say, that many hae been fought under this simple
premise. Ta Helix and ta other officials have done a fine job of overseeing that.

But do ya really want ta over tax ta officials by now making them responsible for *all* duels pertaining to ta rings. In short, Brian, do ya really want ta create a whole set of new rules stating as to the why and whereas and means for a Baron to say he will give his ring back to ta Council, or that a Challenger will nae continue ta press his challenge. Do ya really want ta open that ant hill up and see if ya can get all ta little buggers ta march
in a straight line. I think nae.

Which comes to ta joy and ta essence of me pleasure and pride in ta October 14th affair. It be a pure duel, neither man really gained much from his victory, but both be willing ta risk much for his principle. It was pure and sweet, no official needed to oversee ta conduct of either participant. It was thought by those that witnessed it, that each man be above a need for that. Brian I wish ya could hae been there; ya would hae been proud.

And it should have ended there. That night, all that was left to ta council was ta decide how ta reprimand Dal. But ta Huma has done chosen ta go back on his word. Alas Brian, mayhaps that be ta strongest argument against me stand; but would it nae hae been sweet ta see it Brian, just see ta honor hold duelists to ta highest level of trust?

I guess I just say one more thing. If me Jeff hae lost that night, perhaps his fist would be lighter a ring, but he himself would have gained a higher tribute than any Council or Official could have given him. He would forever be known as a man of his word. Ta Huma could have that too if he chose.

Brian,

Forgive me, if I misinterprete here, but was it not your contention in the above statement that the officials of this sport aren't responsible for upholding the results of honor duels?

::raises a slim brow at that statement wondering if no officials were there why was Reiver named as calling the duel::
