"I have -always- submitted to the scrutiny of my superiors on the staff and -never- made an official ruling that is not -clearly- covered by the rules without consulting those self-same superiors."

Drakewyn has a superior. Golden has a superior. Thorn has this same superior. The superior is the patrons they serve. If a patron finds a fault in something done or in the process of being done, and the patrons disagree, each complaint should be listened to carefully. Each complaint should be reviewed. Each complaint should be attempted to be satisfied.

We are the patrons whom you gladly serve. Like any proper servant, you should be respectful, polite, congenial, and understand that is your job. We are not your children or underlings. We are the patrons.

A couple cents from me... I apologize ahead of time as I am mainly inferring from what I imagine to be the official's job. If I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll be corrected.
Drake does answer to a higher authority. Yet, there are times when you can't tell two people who want to kill eachother, "Oh, hold on for a couple days, I have to confirm it with my superiors". It is when these situations require personal judgement by the official, and thus, as one chooses to refer it, as "whim".
I really don't like the fact that the death duel was called. In fact, I recall at least one occasion where someone asked me to officiate a duel to the death. I said no. I did not tell them to wait to make sure it's okay with others, but I told them to find someone else. I don't think anyone did handle the match, which pleased me that the rings were respected.
The point is, there are times when you have to think quickly, and handle an event how you think you need to, want to, or have to. If an official is called to do something when it is not their shift, then I don't believe they are required to ask permission. This extends to death matches and challenges alike.
You don't like how the official handles it, then there are certain things you can do. I, personally, don't like the fact that Drake called a death match. What did I do, you ask?
I moved on.

For clarification...

I did not call the death match, though I was the one who was able to circumvent the Ward for the two individuals in question.
And Lupton... perhaps you missed my later statement... "Once the decision is made, -then- is the time the community as a whole should comment one way or the other... as they have in the past."
With this statement, I -clearly- indicate that I -am- answerable to the community as a whole.
In addition, I ask this once more... "If I feel the need to get advice on how to do my job, I will ask those people who have done the job before. Who is better qualified, after all?"
I thank you for your time.

If we get into this Ward debate again I may be forced to kill someone, and who knows where it'd be?

Drakewyn, my post was not solely to you or in reference to you. Rather, it was towards the DoS Staff in general. I believe that the vast majority of the Staff believes themselves above the patron who doesn't join them. I further believe they find no qualm in displaying this in a demeanor fraught with arrogance, generally lacking the manners one would expect from a servant. These beliefs stem from my own personal experiences with the Staff for the
past four years. The quality of staff in the Duel of Swords has dropped dramatically.

It gets worse, in my eyes. It gets worse in that we cannot argue it or try and set it right. Our venue of discussion, these boards, is monitored by the staff. We cannot critique them or else our post is removed. Our words are censored and filtered so that only the proper opinions can be expressed.

It will be said we can contact a superior. The fact is, however, they all like each other. A superior's punishment to another DoS Staff member has always been null to minor, excluding rare cases. Their view is understandably biased. The injustice found in that they did not act is never seen. Why? No one got to hear about it.

It's been said that we are in lesser times within this sport. Let me be the first to say our staff has played a key role in this decline.

Lupton,

I am truly sorry for your perceived poor service from the staff, as my experience differs I feel compelled to relate it. I have had nothing but the best of service from the staff, I respect them and appreciate their hard work. I have never felt looked down upon by any of those that don the uniform, nor do I look at them as servants in the way you seem to be using the word. If the staff does filter the cork board, they must use a tool fraught with
overly large holes. As to the assertion that all of the staff like each other I find that to be highly unlikely, I do believe that they show a united front, which is the professional thing to do. You lament that we do not get to hear details that relate to disciplinary action, would you like your life's admonishments placed here for all to peruse? I think it better for them to learn their lessons privately, then put them to work publicly. As to the
perceived decline of your sport, if you cannot effect change from without ... effect change from within.

Lupton dear~~~

I shan't go too far into your views of the staff as servants of DoS, mostly because I happen to agree with them to an extent. As one of these staff members, I realize that I am here (as are the rest of us) to help with the enjoyment of the sport. I work long hours and more shifts than are required, as well as filling in for other staff members that are occassionally unable to meet their shifts, on top of calling the odd challenge or two. I also
work in other areas of RhyDin that are not nearly as *high-profile* as working in the Duel of Swords. I do all this so that ~all~ of us can enjoy our time. ALL of us.... the patrons and staff alike. I feel slighted by your cutting remarks about the quality of the staff now within DoS. I don't work with each and everyone of them, but the ones I ~do~ work with show grace and patience in what can only be termed a difficult position to fill. I
wouldn't suggest to you that you might consider becoming a staff member before making such remarks. You are, of course, entitled to your own opinion --- whether I feel it is an informed one or not. I would suggest, however, that your remark is unfounded. I would hardly think that *the majority* or the staff could be considered to *believe themselves above the patron who doesn't join
them. I further believe they find no qualm in displaying this in a demeanor fraught with arrogance... * As I said, I don't work with all of them, but I do know most of them on a social level... and did so long before I joined the staff. The professionalism and dedication to the Duels that I witnessed among the staff at that time is verra nearly directly responsible for my becoming a member of the staff. I can say in
all honesty that the staff has not gotten worse, but by and large it has gotten better. Those who wear the uniform of the Red Dragon Inn now are, in my humble opinion, overall more professional, more dedicated to their duty, and more dedicated to the sport as well.

Lupton, I am glad I am not the only one fed up with the arrogance of (some) RDIs.

For far too long the staff has conventiently forgotten that the ultimate superior they have to answer to is the patron. If any current employee of the Red Dragon Inn has a problem with this fact, perhaps it is time to step down.

Khrysta,

First-off let me tell you that you are not among those I've referenced. I've always held a respect for your results.

Second, I'm brought to this. " I would hardly think that *the majority* or the staff could be considered to *believe themselves above the patron who doesn't join them. I further believe they find no qualm in displaying this in a demeanor fraught with arrogance... *"

I think by sheer virtue that you are, in fact, a member of the staff excludes you from being properly exposed or informed in this area.

"I can say in all honesty that the staff has not gotten worse, but by and large it has gotten better."

Not to demeen your view or opinion, as every opinion has some worth, but I'm not sure how informed you are as I'm not sure how long you have visited the basement. However long it's been, I can almost assure you that I have been here longer, and hence would have a better viewpoint in which to note the slow declining in the Duel of Swords Staff.

As I recall Lupton, you were the other half of the dueling pair that requested the ward lowered and when I told you it was improper you stated Drake had lower the ward. When I questioned you as to under whose authority you said perhaps the one that raised it in the first place. You of all people should tread lightly upon this subject. She did as you and or Anon asked of her, how dare you throw it in her face when the request involving you was granted
and the rest of the community scruntized her behavior even though she tried to comply with the basic jist of your message which is, "The customer is always right." That is fine, but if all the customers are right and think other customers are wrong then no one is right nor wrong and no one can be pleased, can they?

Collie,

The words you quoted had nothing to do with your post. If you feel like getting back on topic, please feel free.

Fine.. the topic was the intention for the seventh, but your topic was the patrons being the superiors to the staff.

My point that you seem to have missed was that Drake attempted to satisfy the desires of two of the superiors that you mention, in so doing she disappointed others, lots of them. Not all of the patrons will ever be pleased at once. Someone will always have a grievance or be disatisfied with the workings of this place.

I won't even touch your comments regarding removal of notices from the cork. Your fellow patrons have the right to ask for the removal of notices they find unbecoming to themselves.
