Forgive me fer puttin' words in your mouth, Adonai, but I'm gonna try and explain what yer sayin' to all those who don't get it.
Uziel's saying that it's OK to do whatever you want if it's part of the rules, and others shouldn't whine about it. He's not sayin' that he agrees with everythin'. It's completely different. Instead of moanin' and groinin' about how Uziel's wrong, put that energy to good use and do somethin' about it. I fer one am sick and tired of all the apathy exuding from the arena.
Yours truly,
Kayne Rune

Take yer humble opinion and friggin put it on a billboard for all I care.....I had a gripe and I aired it....as to sounding like E...I dunna think so....just for the fact that I can at least give ground when a logical point is aired...unlike you obviously....seems more to me you skimmed my post and found and opportunity ta make yerself look good by bashing away like the rest of the sheep....if you can see from what I have tried to point out...it has a lot to do with the fact that we're all FREE to
do as we wish here in RhyDin.
~Adonai~
(( As to RP.....I also find it distasteful when someone doesn't do anything IC but duel...but that has little or no bearing on the people that are and have challenged, since all of them, including myself have fairly well rounded characters and all of them RP extensively. Once again I find myself attacked by someone who barely knows me and has not even grasped the point of my post. Figures.))

Kayne, and Adonai if this an accurate paraphrase of what you are saying,
What precisely would be, "putting that energy to good use"?
The answer most commonly heard is that of might makes right... that if I have a problem with Baron X, I should challenge and remove him. I fear, however, that is not an option in this particular scenario.
If the issue a duelist has problems with is that there seem to be too many senseless challenges, they can not prove that point by issuing yet another challenge. That is not only counter-productive to their cause, but also makes them appear a hypocrit.
Without that recourse, the next sensible option is to make the opinion known by some other means. That is the purpose of these posts. If a man (or woman) can make an opinion known and back it up with sensible reasoning, then he has an oppurtunity to convince another of the vision. The scenario is an open forum for debate because there are always two sides to an issue. Allow both sides to make their points and often times they will at least establish a mutual understanding and perhaps a bit of respect
for the other side, though agreement is generally too much to hope for.
My apologies if the last letter by my hand seemed overly harsh on Adonai, but I am a firm believer in the benefits of open debate. Telling people to cease and desist, as well as pummeling them with offense language, only frustrates that... building resentment instead of mutual respect.

Aside from the above, I would leave you with three additional thoughts:
~ Kayne... you complain of apathy in the language I quoted above. Stifling emotional topics of discussion hardly helps to move the populace away from this perceived lethargy. Rather, it once again enforces the "shut up and duel" mentallity, telling duelist to remain indifferent to anything that can not be solved with steel.
~ Adonai... You have, several times now, lumped duelists together as "upperclassmen" or "old school". I would simply like to point out to you that all of us that have been here for some time are *not* of like mind on these issues. I would also like to note that only a handfull continuously point out exactly how long we've been among the arena's patronage. My tenure in the Duel of Swords will never be used as an offensive weapon when engaged in verbal conflict. If there is a select group of "vetran"
duelists that you have a problem with, please take it up with them respectively, rather than insulting the whole lot.

Yes, that fly has an opinion, and it would continue there, beating its head sensless against the window, until another opinion was offered to it. Without the introduction of other opinions we may all stay on our own senseless paths... I, for one, would be happy to hear the opinion of another who believes it may be easier to exit through the open door.
Without the free discourse of opinion, some of us may never learn from the mistakes and, more importantly, the discoveries of others.

(on the ooc side of this)
Adonai, I don't believe you are being attacked. It is you points that are being attacked. The difference may seem slim, but it is there.
MPolanski was correct in what she said. The Duel of Swords is supported by the FFGF to be used a roleplaying tool.... it is not a wargame, else it would be in another forum. That is a point of fact. This is *not* to say that you see it any differently, or that you do not roleplay or even that you do so poorly.. it is simply a statement of fact.
Now.. to elaborate on that.. and this is the point that upsets more than a handfull of people... the game's potential for inspiring roleplay is highest when there is a challenge. Any challenge with true meaning behind it can draw in dozens of players and make the time we spend looking at these little screens that much more enjoyable... The challenge for "reasons of my own" or the challenge "to test myself" robs this potential from the other players.
I condemn no one here .. I only offer food for thought.

Goon have idea. Lot people say Warlord fighter people challenge lot, it too much. Baron people got defend, defend, got lose some time, it not fair.
This Goon idea- Goon hear Warlord people have tournament, winner be Baron person most time. Happen when Baron person say no more want be Baron person, take ring off, go away. Goon think need tournament more! Goon have two way fix, too!
Way fix one- Baron person lose challenge, have tournament! Best fighter win most time, it good way find new Baron person! Problem, happen too much.
Way fix two- There cycle. Cycle end, have tournament! Make regular. Any Baron person lose challenge two week, three week before tournament, winner not get be Baron person. Ring be prize for tournament! It mean there more than one ring prize lot time, not big problem, best two, three get ring, lucky not lot good Warlord person not get ring.
Goon know ways fix not perfect. Goon hope sword people like way fix, fix problem, make idea work lot good! System seem broke, Goon try help fix.

Subject: Simple Truths on the Issue
Date: 8/23/97 5:27 AM Pacific Standard Time
From: Valmion
My input if I may,
In the three and one half years that Questrion has been in existance in the DoS, there have been three major duelers who have consistantly served this house in the duels. That would be my son Arlingond, my closest advisor, the mage Moralitor and myself. Three and one half years, and how many title challenges?
My son Arlingond, a warlord for well over two years now, has never challenged. Moralitor, a warlord for over three years has made but one challenge, to the 1st Bearer of the 9th ring and won. He retired that ring.
Now, the simple truth becomes plain. Myself, first challenged for Overlord, as there were no baron ranks when I made this challenge. I won. My second challenge came to the Overlord also, one I would have never challenged, had I not won the Warlord Tournament. The only other challenge I have made, was my most recent one to the Baron Ulysses NS. I was tested for making this challenge? I was called dishonorable when I questioned the test? I had reason, it was the 9th ring as stated above, retired
from Questrion. So, what is all this honor talk? If Moralitor were too challenge for Luthien's ring, would that be "good" enough to warrent the challenge? The rings 2nd bearer who retired it, challenging it's current holder?
Well the second simple truth. Moralitor has not challenged because of how I was treated when I made mine.I sit and watch challenges go through a revolving door process here, some questioned, some not. Very few with as much merit to the challenge as those stated above. So, when we all sit back and discuss what we feel to be honorable and what we do not, we need to look at the final simple truth of all of this.
History has always been the greatest teacher. Look back at the greats of this sport and see how many times they challenged and what they challenged for, and for what reason. Then sit back and access your "own" merits.
Sincerely,
Warlord Valmion

Although I have respect for the titles of Baron and Overlord, I believe that the person who wins the title must defend his/her right to hold it. It does not matter in regards to the whys and wherefors..all that matters in the end is IF you can still have possesion of the ring at the end of the duel. And perhaps there are actually duelers out here who would do well on the Council...what an idea!
Baron's and the Overlord rule by divine right, that being that the god or gods bless their rule....and they lose when the gods abandon them to their fate.....and if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen, eh?

So if you are unhappy with human nature than I suggest that you go RP in one of the other Rp's as you'll not be happy dealing with egos and mindless masses))

Stepping up ta the message Boards just outside the arena, Ford stood and stared for well over an hour, flipping through the various messages, flaming threads and coherent or not so coherent thoughts shared in this public place::

While I would indeed be glad to see thee back, my friend and former Housemate,
I am the one who holds the 1st Baron's Ring for now. I entered the Warlord's Tourney speciically to get the ring you once wore, not only so it could be held by one of the House again, because of it's rich history as well, mainly from when you held it. Be assured my friend should I still remain the Baron of the 1st ring, I shall endevor to hold it tightly regardless of who challenges for it.

Did I not here from members of House L-L on an occasion that anyone caught usin a fancy on the first round would be tossed out?
As to the fly and the window, the fly eventually dies. Remeber what a mighty fighter once told me, "I am a fool, but I am never the same fool twice."
Everyone talks and talks about challenges, but ye dinna ken what a challenge is. On a regular night the now retired legandary Dwarf, Jeff asked me to duel. *That* was a challenge. Gaining title is nae a challenge, Price Charles showed that, yet he ran off while the men loyal to him lay dieing on the moors. My point? Challenges occur every day. If ye seek a title merely to wave it about and show how big ye are, ye may not meet to the constant stress of that title.
Tis nay that I am against challenges, tis just that some of the best challenges are often over looked. Imagine a simple Commoner or Swords-person, beating Dal. They havena gained a title but have bragging rights that many a Warlord or Baron challenging for Overlord dinna have. They carry the knowledge that they have, in fact, best the hightest dueler in DoS.
To me a win counts as much more than a failed challenge.
In the end the failed challenge is only a loss.
