DUEL of SWORDS ~ Eli Grady

Mysterious happenings in the DoS, DoF, and DoM

The Duel of Swords, Duel of Fists, and Duel of Magic appear to be suffering from some sort of malaise of the spirit of late according to several informants. Attendance is down considerably in all venues, however the DoM appears to be the least effected.

Indeed, in the vast, cavernous spaces of the Arena of the DoS echoes are the order of the day. The reasons for this are not clear, but our editor will air his opinion in the editorial column in this edition.

Bank Robbery in broad daylight.

The First Unaligned bank of RhyDin at the corner of Spectre and Banshee adjacent to the blighted downs was robbed in broad daylight by a gang consisting of 5-7 swordsman, a mage, and some shandy's.

They strong-armed the manager into the vaults and escaped under a spell of illusion. The manager, Igor Fletchit stated the brigands escaped with slightly over 10,000.00 in gold and silver coins. In the resulting confusion a security officer died of the shakes. The brigands when they are caught will be charged with murder most foul.

It is an open issue that attendance in the various venues that make up the sporting life in this portion of RhyDin are in trouble over dwindling attendance We as a community need to address this issue. The question is what can be done? Most of us are aware that these particular sports have a limited audience when one considers the other temptations that can be easily addressed in the greater RhyDin area.

In my opinion the higher rankings of each of the sports can do more towards giving back to their sports what it gives to them. It is not uncommon to observe a higher-ranked person treat those of lesser ranking in a contemptuous manner, dismissing them out of hand when they defeat them. This is not sportsmanship, it is boorish, cavalier behavior that discourages the growth of the sports.

Equally, new members are in too many cases wanting the easy way out, wanting the answers to everything given to them in a neatly bound and illustrated fashion. Not getting their way they act inappropriately.

In the middle are those who try and treat all the same, as best they can. These stalwart souls are unfortunately few in number. In this group are also those of mercurial temperament who are friendly and helpful one day and ill-tempered the next which can compound the problem occasionally.

A suggestion may well be a revisiting of the ethos of each of the sports and taking the words to heart. There is no harm in helping a fellow sentient in their progression on the wheel of life. Those who by nature are foul-tempered and quick to anger, particularly those of high rank would serve their sport better by confining their abrasive actions to their peers who have the skills suited to dealing with such behaviors

New players are like unto a garden that needs cultivating, a rough hand damages and either delays or twists the new growth. The continued growth of the sports will always require fresh growth, new blood and new hope. We the benefactors of the sports need to be more visible and more accessible.

I offer the following points that may be useful.

1. Introduce yourself to a new member either publicly in the arena or use the mental-link approach and welcome them to the sport

2. Have a short, (2-3 paragraph, positive summation) missive posted that sums up the ethos of the sport. References to other corks could be listed.

3. Fight the new player (commoner and/or swordsman) on their level if your nature permits. If not, you should at least let them know your planning on using your best moves in the match.

4. Practice courtesy during and after your match.

5. Provide private advice after the match in instances where the beginner made either a particularly bad, or good move. Encouragement is the best method of ensuring attendance.

6. Consider periodic (quarterly) tournaments for Commoner-Grand masters in which the winner gets a even chance at becoming a Warlord.

7. Quit all the pointless bickering on the boards. It is depressing to read missives by the premier members of the sports squabbling over petty issues or meaningless "he/she said" issues.

8. If the sport is not as you want it to be, as you hoped it would be, or as you dream it could be get involved.

NOTE: If you should choose to reply to this or any other editorial with the appellation "Dear Editor or words to that effect" the RhyDin Times-Reporter assumes that permission is granted to quote all or parts of the response. If you do not want your words reused address the response to Sylyim Fondor directly.

The "G" Word

I had intended to take the one called "G" to task about his recent comments, but reading my own editorial above forces me to eat my words. Therefore I shall allow past insults and declarations slide by.
Go and live in peace "G".
