From: KayneRune

I, Kayne Rune, do publically announce my challenge to the holder of the Sixth Ring, Adeena Maeax. My reasons are simple, and they do not include a want for power. As I consider myself a decent duelist, I find it in my interests to test myself against a great warrior and respected person. Also, I figure if she believes it is *her* ring, then let her prove it.

Below is a list of peer wins which I compiled over my dueling career...

1 )Kayne Rn def. Skyler JC, 5 - 1.5 in 10 rounds. 6-17-97 RDI Luth
2 )Kayne Rn def. HumaDragbn, 5 - 3 in 9 rounds. 6-17-97 RDI Kaprie
3 )Kayne Rn def. HALFDWARF, 5-1 in 8 rounds. 7-03-97 RDI Clo
4 )Kayne Rn def. Ecore X, 5.5-4.5 in 13 rounds. 7-03-97 RDI Mathia
5 )Kayne Rn def. GnrtDrgoon 5.5-2 in 10 rounds 7-11-97 RDI Mathia
6 )Kayne Rn def. KnightVHonR 5-3 in 7 rounds. 7-11-97 RDI Mathia
7 )Kayne Rn def. Rix Favre 5.5-4 in 14 rounds. 7-11-97 RDI Scad
8 )Kayne Rn def. Marzan 5-2 in 9 rounds 7-11-97 RDI Scad
9 )Kayne Rn def. LrdArkanan 5.5 - 3.5 in 14 rounds 7-11-97 RDI Kit
10)Kayne Rn def. RLupton 5-4 in 10 rounds Date Lost RDI Knight

I will provide the caller, and I suppose the Red Zealot will determine a date/time that is do-able for both of us.

Actually Kayne... as I believe I told you before, I don't know you -or- Adeena... However, Iain's support of the Baroness does lead me to lean towards supporting her...
This is -not- a gender issue... When Jeff and Ellisa dueled, I supported Jeff because he's my friend. If you can't comprehend that, then you -need- to lose.
To put it simply, those who socialize and make friends, have supporters during they're duels.

Its a lovely ideal, Drake. However untrue.
Women are a smaller group in the duels. They therefore feel somewhat threatened, and support each other more than males tenfold. It is indeed a gender issue--look who the last three free Baronial people were. Adeena, Ellisa, and Luthien. Ellisa and Luthien are female...I'm nearly positive Adeena is too. ::sketches a small smiley face to signify his joke:: As an idle thought, when was the last time a woman challenged a woman for a baronial ring..if ever? Well after rummaging through a couple of
papers I found in the historical building, the answer is..never. We've had sufficent barons of the female persuasion. That's not why--its because of the fact that the ratio is so unbalanced, theres an unspoken "anti male" attitude floating about the duels. And after hearing some of the words spoken about the arena, let me say this...It would be difficult to ever find me challenging a male baron again. Please note--I have nothing wrong with the female barons, or at least two of them, and I don't see
why any of the 6 male barons should have escaped these challenges--but Ajay has had, in my memory..Adonai and Rix. Baphe had has Kaprielle.
Rand, Steve ..oh, yes, and Tarl I believe. Lupton has had JamesDandy, myself, Huma..
Jeff Skyler, and Adonai, Davestro Adeena (and Nova Davestro,) Dex has had Daegarth, myself(for the intent to challenge purpose) as well as a few others who I cannot recall at the moment.
Ellisa-1, Jeff (I believe)
Luth-0
Adeena-1, Kayne
My point is...women receive less challenges than men. If you want to say they're better barons than the men, fine. I don't believe that, at least for not all of them. If anyones asking as to "why" I posted this..its because it is very much a gender thing, and its about time we realized it.
Rad

From: KayneRune

Give 'em hell, Rad!

On a more serious note, though, I want(ed) this challenge to be just a loose competition between two duelists without all the fuss of ulterior motives and such. Although Adeena is sour on the subject, it's her duty to accept my wishes; and I guess she'll just have to bear with my "petty challenge", as it's been called by others. Who knows? I -could- win, and my loss isn't a foregone conclusion...yet.
But on the subject of the gender thing, my former post was intended as a joke, and not as a full observation. Obviously, Adeena has quite a few male duelists in her entourage, most of which have held a position of respect in one time or another. When the time comes, though, and we both step into the ring, there is only one thing to be said: May he or she with the soundest body and sharpest mind win, and leave it at that.
As I have picked up from Adeena's attitude (though I may be wrong), is a little annoyance due to the fact that she has been challenged so soon after reclaiming her ring. I can understand.....in a way. Normally, I would not challenge a Baron(ess) of only a few weeks, but since she has held this ring before for a long period of time, my sympathy will not be extended. And as for Adeena and her views on me, I couldn't care less. She judges with no knowledge of who I am, and what my motivations are.
I sorely hope she can understand, and not hold me in the lowest regard. And let me not forget, "judge not lest ye be judged yourself." So all I'm asking, Adeena, is that you show me a little respect, and not treat me like a cur who has only been dueling for a few weeks, and has illusions of grandeur, or whatever.
Lastly, going back to the gender issue, I have to agree with Rad. Please ladies, don't bite my head off yet. When you stop and consider it, there IS a bond between the female patrons of the rings that does not extend to their male counterparts. I've seen it, Rad's seen it, and I'm sure many others have. While I express my views on this, know that I hold nothing against the women of the sport, and I am not biased in any way against the female gender. But what I am trying to say is this: Rad IS
right....in a way. The numbers he put out for us worked right. Who knows, though, maybe it is just a coincidence that the female Baroness' have had a lack of challenges recently. It is not my place to answer that, and it is not my place to argue with another person's views. I guess I'm outta wind, so I'll shut up now. In finality, though, I wish Adeena (with all my heart), the best of luck, and I hope there are no hard feelings passed due to my "petty challenge".

::reads over Rad's post, and Kayne::

I'm not gonna address da issue of bonds between genders, what I do care ta address is da fact dat female barons have not been issued many challenges.

First, we must bring ta light an understanding of why challenges are made. As I see it, challenges come ta bear because da challenger, whether he admits it or not, has a gripe wit da baron. Maybe its somethin' small, maybe not, but fer a baron ta be challenged he or she has gotta make someone mad.

Second, when was da last time a female baron was involved in a political scandal or a house war, or an intercession conflict? Not since Adeena have baronesses gotten involved wit OL intercessions. And dere is not one political mess I can dink dat Ellisa or Luth has gotten inta.
So now da question is, why challenge Ellisa or Luth? If Ellisa or Luth hasn't made verra many people mad, or gotten in da middle of a political agruements in which dey would make enemies, den it stands ta reason dey would have few challengers.

So maybe its not a matter of gender, but rather dat Ellisa, Luth, and Adeena are always contribuitin' ta make da arena a fun place ta show up, and not gettin' involved in da male skirmishes over da silliest dings. Maybe no one challenges da ladies because deir is no reason.
I challenged Ellisa as a matter of a rematch, after it was over, I no longer had a reason ta rechallenge. So in some small way I feel justified ta say what I do in dis post, because fer me, it holds true.

Jeffrey:

You've hit it on the head, my friend.

Regardless of what anyone says to the contrary, challenges are made for one of two reasons:

1) A personal gripe;
2) A desire to earn the title.

When it comes, however, to 2), the decision of WHOM to challenge *always* has an underlying reason, even if that reason falls to process of elimination. One will choose the Baron they like *least* of the available options... or one will eliminate the Barons they don't wish to see deposed, and then choose from the remainder based on such things as previous success against them.

Luthien hasn't been challenged because, understanding I say this with no small bias, nobody dislikes her enough to do so when there are other options available. As for Ellisa...

Well, folks, I'd venture to say that gender bias is exactly why nobody is challenging Ellisa... because all the males are too busy sucking up to her. If you want to point fingers regarding the gender line here, pointing them at the women is probably the wrong direction. Halo, Siera Redwin, and Kaprielle all won their rings in tournaments. Adeena first won her ring as a result of an honor challenge with Percival, then in a deliberate attempt to regain her ring. Elissa's challenges have been a result
of her personal rivalries with other duelers. Midnight Blue took her shot at Elijah for what appeared to have been personal reasons. The *only* time I know of where a female dueler has issued challenge to a male for no apparent reason whatsoever was Luthien challenging Ulysses... so why even bring up the question of why women aren't challenging women? You only have ONE test case to draw on.

When we see members of one House challenging one another (the Amethyst Ring notwithstanding, inasmuch as it isn't a house), maybe then we can question why women aren't challenging women. When there are dozens of female warlords juggling peer wins and looking to upgrade their seating, maybe then we can ask. Until then... I think it's an irrelevant point.

>>Elissa's challenges have been a result of her personal rivalries with other duelers.<<

1) My name is Ellisa. ;-)

2) I challenged Baron Ford Prefect because he was someone I respected, I believe that challenges should be just that... challenging. As far as I am concerned Ford is still my swordsbrother and I miss his prescene in the rings.

3)There is only two people I can think of that I would enter a ring with intent to take a ring because I do not respect them and would consider "rivals".

4) My challenges against Baron Jeffrey Oakenshield sprung first from a desire to test myself against the dueler with the highest, most daunting record in the sport; the second was more of a friendly lark than a rivalry. For if we were truly rivals would I have stood at his side as his Second for his challenge match to defend his ring?

5) Other than Jeffrey, Luth, Adeena and I are the newest duelers to hold rings. Perhaps when we have held our rings for eight months, like Baron AJaybird, we will have had as many challenges.

6) Rad, it is not a gender thing, there are some men that I support as firmly as some women duelers, it is a personal preference thing.

Females not recieving challenges? I find this a very strange thing to read.

I have been challenged a total of 7 times...yes, 7. I believe I have been challenged as much or more than any baron or either sex. I have been challenged by a female...as good friend in fact, Alais D Nightsong. I have met NovaShayde,ZanDura,Tukros and Ranger Blue in the ring for my position. I have furthermore been challenged By Sau Bau...and after waiting three grueling weeks of no responses which I did *not* have to do, the match was ruled Forfiet. I have been challenged with a death match for my ring
by former Baron Daegarth. Now I have been challenged by you Kayne.

I care not your reasons or motivations, I care not your record, I care nothing of you or your goals. The single thing I care for is keeping the sixth ring, my ring, a pure as possible. My ring has been held by the best of the best and has changed hands the fewest by far. Those I call brothers because they had the skill to win this, the purest of prizes, are Torquillian Aspendale,
Sir Percival, David Strosnider and my dear friend Nova Shadow.

I say to all, I have been challenged by those who are friends, I have been challenged to the death I have been challenged by those who insist on referring to me as a male and I have been challenged by one of my sisters. I have run the gambit of emotions and done what was needed to keep something that is far more than "Just a ring", this is a legacy.

Warlord Kayne Rune, I have not said a single word against you in any way publically or privately, I have not called your challenge "Petty", I have not judged you in the least. I know you not and after we step into the ring I am positive I will know you just as little.

Warlord Zaradda, you should speak to your sword brothers for they seem to have a finer understanding of female duelers. I am indeed a female and if you ever remark about my gender again on these boards I will make you one of my sisters with the slightest flik of the wrist.

I hereby announce now that this match is indeed a forgone conclusion. My fates have directed me back to this position and my fates have told me I shall remain here for another long, lenghty time. If this means that the most noble barons Jeffery and myself again must compete for nmber of defenses, so be it. Take not my words as cruel for they are not meant so but I am already looking ahead to my next challenge and wondering if maybe it may be the warlord Zaradda...Mayhaps he thinks since he cannot
defeat a male baron he must attempt a female.
We are all equal in everything except talent young one...I know just how talented I am.

Warlord Kayne, I speak not from Hubris or pride. I speak from a standpoint of superior skill and knowledge of the rings and the art of the dance. Your apparent lack of complete confidence in your own skills dismays me.

You have already lost.

Adeena Maeax,

Baron Maeax,

Mayhaps my lack of dueling skills is a trait few have dubbed humbleness. I have no need to brag of my accomplishments and state that my skill is far better than others, even if it may be so. I do, however, respect you as a duelist and a warrior, so my "childish" taunts will be witheld. While I never accused you of calling my challenge "petty", others have, per se, and I apologize for the mistake.

Also, my views on this gender issue have been misleading, to say the least. I, without prejudice or personal views, stated what I observed in the arena. Nothing more. My intentions were warped, and words were placed in my mouth. In response to this, I apologize, and hope that the arguement can fade away......no matter what the truth is. Elissa, Luth, and others whom I may have offended, I extend my deepest apologies, and hope you won't deem me any lower than I am right now.

Back to Adeena. I understand the bond you have with the sixth ring, and I only now realize how strong it really is. While I would hate to seperate you from it, I feel this concept has gone far enough; too far to turn back now. Know this, Adeena: When the time comes, the ring will rest on my finger. I have taken what was once a friendly challenge, and have added my thoughts and emotions to it. I did not wish this to happen, but it was inevitable. I cannot help but make this personal, mind
you, due to the fact that you would defend this ring to the death; Therefore, my usual politeness will be evident no longer.

Red Zealot, your overconfidence will be your enemy. You fight with pride and rage, not pure concentration. In my eyes, you are a poor role-model to the dueling community. Barons should be a symbol of honor and skill, not of spite and worry of losing what was once theirs. I can see through your disposition, and I find a scared little girl who is not yet ready to part with her ring. I sorely hope you wisen up before our match, lest your own fears control you. And as for your congratulations
on my acquiring the peer wins, I say this: Do not patronize me. I want nothing from you, save your ring. You have my *best* wishes.

~Kayne Rune

((Well, don't jump the gun on my newer RP skills...though I agree wholeheartedly with my mistake. Unfortunately, I caught myself after the message was posted, and I'm not proud to say that that post is mine. But if you are referring to my response to your thoughts, I posted with my thoughts as well, and I've come to think that that was O.K. "mind-reading" outburst, and this arguement is very, very unnecessary, and I apologize again for fueling the flames of a needless arguement. Hopefully, no OOC hard feelings.))

The sixth ring is a legacy. Can I take the responsibility on myself to protect this ring if I win? Would I be the biggest jerk for tarnishing it's history? I see now that Adeena protects this ring not for herself, but for the legend. But then again, is that reason enough to rescind a challenge? Should I throw away my dreams and goals to preserve what's left of the little history that the DoS has now? Or would I be further adding to the legend; preserving it's legacy? My thoughts twist upon

I never claimed you had a problem with "women", but I must say that there have certainly been a few women who had problems with you. That I called you a chauvenist is merely me pointing out what I have observed for quite some time.
You are a hard person to understand... at times you seek friendship, then you turn around and do the things that -surely- you know will only cause mis-understanding. At one point, I called you a friend... later, I thought of you as part of my extended family... later still, I looked on you as a traitor... then I overcame this opinion and now look for a reason to call you friend again. To be honest, I am not seeing many.
