sans Jaycy

Arriving in Jaycy’s home, sans Jaycy, she quickly made her way to the back of the house where Bane and Silas should be expected to be found. Leaving Smudge to play with the kitten, Auril and Tareth to make himself at home in their living room, she called out timidly on her way back, "Bane?"

Not long after her inquiry, Silas made it abundantly clear where he could be found, the wailing cry not unusual of a baby. And Sarah made for the nursery. Standing outside the cracked door, she could hear Bane soothing the child, and peeking through the crack, she saw he was pacing, with the child in his arms, rocking him back and forth.

Pausing a moment to enjoy the sight of father and son, and think to herself just how great a family this was…the thought of Jaycy and Bane together jarred her back to her present task. With a light knock on the door, pushing it open a bit further… "Bane?" That said softly as she sort of made her way in.

"is that you, hon?" Bane’s back was to the doorway and obviously he hadn’t recognized that Sarah’s voice was not that of his wife’s. Soon enough though, he would turn to discover, this indeed was NOT Jaycy peeking in on them.

There was not real alarm at seeing Sarah, she *had* been staying with them, along with her cat and Kheldar’s dog. It was a houseful, but neither Jaycy nor Bane showed any irritation or lack of welcome to their guests.

He simply smiled at Sarah, "I’m assuming she sent you home first and will be following shortly?" He knew his wife, he knew the kinds of precautions she would take with her friends, he did not seem worried for her safety, because he knew she could take care of herself. In fact, his calmness made Sarah even a bit more uneasy, if that was possible.

"S-she wont be returning here tonight." The fear likely quite evident in her face. "she went with Cas, to…to the Villa."

Watching the looks on Bane’s face change as he heard the news, she began to quickly recap the nights’ events. Of the Three men who had entered the Outback and of his wife’s protection of Sarah, and thus her need to be separated from Sarah and Bane and Silas, for their protection…and of Jaycy’s insistence that she go with Tareth to stay here.

These were not easy things for her to tell him, but his calm manner in rocking Silas and attentively listening did make it easier for her. Sarah assured Bane that there would be plenty of protection for his wife at Cas’ place and that she would do anything she could to help take care of the baby in Jay’s absence.

Bane did little responding, perhaps to hide his concern for Sarah’s sake?  He thanked her for her offers of help and asked her to help make room for Tareth to stay the night. With a tentative smile, she left him with his son to do just that.

She loved being Silas’ Auntie Sarah, oh did she. So helping in his care came as natural to her as her love for his Mommy. But in Jaycy’s absence, things were not so easy as Jaycy made them seem.

Changing diapers, rocking, burping, soothing…her lack of experience in such matters was NOT helping the situation.

Bane had left him in her care, upon her own insistence, she thought he’d be easy to take care of. He’s only 3 weeks old, right?

Right. 3 weeks.

When Jay left again that afternoon, Silas was cleaned, fed, burped and sleeping again. Mommy left behind just one full bottle, all she could pump after his feeding. She had shown Sarah where things could be found, including the formula she had bought, "just in case".

With no real indication as to when Jaycy would be returning home again, Sarah took her responsibilities seriously, but was glad to have them. What more honor could one have than to be trusted to care for someone’s 3-week-old baby?

As the child slept, Sarah played with her own "children", Smudge and Auril. They were becoming quite good companions to each other, though Smudge was about 10 times the size of his kitten friend. Auril was quite content to climb all over the large pooch as he rested near Sarah’s feet, taking to investigating his ears and snout, and sometimes playing with the clinking parts of his collar. She often fell to sleep snuggled up next to Smudge. Who would have known this large dog to be so gentle with an animal he could chew up and swallow for dinner? Sarah petted them both and came to love the companionship they offered, helping to keep her mind from the worries of their "dad", Kheldar.

Soon enough though, Silas would wake and she gladly would attend to his needs of feeding and changing and the whole rigmarole. The first time this happened, things went smoothly, she rocked him, to quiet the crying he woke with, then fed and burped him, maybe not so gracefully as his mom did, but well enough as the infant did eventually fall back to sleep in Sarah’s arms.

Likewise, this occurred again a few hours later, and Sarah, quite proud of her achievements, was catching on to the mothering act.

As night rolled in, things were not so easy as they were earlier in the day. Mom’s milk being depleted, Sarah prepared some formula for the next feeding, which she expected a few hours later. She then made herself comfortable to read as Bane would likely be home quite late in the night, and she wanted not to "fall asleep on the job" as she was known to do, at least at her shift in the Outback.

Right on schedule, Silas did wake and Sarah soothed him, discovering he did need to be changed now. So this she did, fumbling some with the small diaper, she made the mistake of leaving him uncovered a bit too long and found, to her displeasure, him soiling her shirt and a large portion of the changing table becoming wet with urine.

With a sigh, she finished attaching the ends of the diaper to secure it in place, though a bit crooked, and lifted the crying baby to get him calmed down. Changing of her own shirt, and cleaning of the changing table would have to wait until she had gotten him fed and back to sleep again.

Smudge was pacing near Sarah, apparently concerned about the baby, or maybe just curious. He’d been following Sarah around earlier when she was taking care of Silas, and now Auril had joined in, also curious, though keeping her distance.

As Sarah rocked the baby, she offered him the bottle, and he gladly latched on, ready for his feeding. This didn’t last long as once he got one taste of the contents of the bottle he spit it all up and began wailing. It’s a good thing Sarah hadn’t changed her shirt yet, as now she had formula and baby drool to accent the earlier stain.

Trying several times with the bottle, Sarah could not get the boy to accept it, he simply spit it all out and cried. The crying getting louder and more forceful each time she tried the formula. Rocking him and pacing with him, she tried heating the bottle warmer, tried re-mixing the formula with a little extra water, tried simply rocking him back to sleep without the feeding, hoping maybe by the time he woke again, Jaycy would return, but none of this worked.

The wailing cry continued and Sarah walked about the house, rocking, soothing, patting him. She tried turning on music and setting him in the bassinet. He continued to cry, hiccuping now. Sarah looked over him and pleaded, "Please…please Silas, for me? For your Auntie, will you stop crying and sleep? Will you take the bottle, please?"

He looked up at her, hiccuping, but the crying stopped. Sarah nearly did a dance out of joy, until of course, he began crying again. At which point, she began crying herself, feeling a failure.

Its then that she decided to put him in his swing, bundling him up and setting him in the swing chair, she wound it up and said a little prayer as she set it to rock back and forth with music and everything. Somehow, the rocking motion from the swing soothed him, when her rocking him wouldn’t, and he fell to sleep.

She knew it was a temporary fix, but the sound of silence, as the wound up music stopped and his crying ceased, was the most welcome thing she had experienced in a *long* time. She plopped herself down on the couch, forgetting completely of her need to change her shirt and clean the changing table, and rested her head on the arm of the couch.

Smudge, in his most comforting way, came over and gave Sarah a nice wet kiss on her face and proceeded to lay down on the floor in front of the couch. Auril followed suit, taking up residence on the couch curled next to her exhausted mommy.
