Zen sat down in his empty house, frowning as he pondered. The hour was extremely late; one he had grown accustomed to over recent weeks. Sure would be nice to have someone else here, he thought.
He blinked and shook his head-- no matter how hard he tried, he could not take his mind off recent events. It seemed that over the last two weeks his life had been turned upside down-- and it seemed that way because, well, it had been. Over the short time he'd met two people, and he'd become fast friends with each of them. He smiled a bit as he thought of that.
But then, the rumors. He'd not actually heard them, but he'd been told about them. Zen and Jaycy. Zen and Marit. Zen and both of them. He shook his head, disheartened about the rumors, wondering what would inspire people to start and spread them.
At this point, he could only take solace in the truth. Jaycy had told him Neris knew the truth, and he was okay with it. Marit also told him she had told Daelin the truth, and he believed her. If only it were so easy, he thought.
It was easy for him to believe Jaycy because he had talked to Neris, and he certainly gave him the impression nothing was wrong. In fact, it seemed to him Neris had given him a vote of trust. He nodded to himself as he thought about this, knowing it would be okay. Besides, from what Jaycy had told him, if Neris had a problem with the goings on, he probably wouldn't even be sitting here. He was relieved at that.
But no matter what, he couldn't help shake the thought that not all was well between him and Daelin. He had gotten this impression after talking to Daelin once, telling him what good friends he and Marit had become. He seemed to react at the time with a bit of suspicion. Possibly, it was easier for him to believe the rumors because he was away. He chuckled a bit, thinking it ironic that the man he had called friend for so long might believe the
rumors, and yet the one he had hardly known until two weeks ago knew there was no truth in them.
He trusted them, right? Marit had expressed some concern to him last night as he brought her home-- concern that perhaps she was giving him the wrong idea about things. But, no, he had reassured her he knew how things were. He assured her he would never come between her and Daelin. That just wasn't his style. He shook his head again. He had found some happiness, but he was worried as well. There was that chance things could go horribly wrong.
He looked at the clock and noticed it was nearly morning. He decided it was time for some sleep. Hopefully he could forget about all the lies being told.
And yet, as he headed to bed, those were not the things eating at him the most.
Sure would be nice to have someone else here, he thought.
