Avery sat there in his small cottage, his fist closed, as he stared out the window. His eyes drifted off over the street to the surrounding hills just outside of town. That was the direction he last saw his friend leave. That was the place where they exchanged there last words. In his heart he might have known he would never see him again, but there was that chance. If one were to have challenged, he would have been
back. Yet, none came, and neither did he. The time frame had all but expired on his wishes, and so it was that Avery had Christopher draft up the letter.

His hand opened slightly, revealing the prize within. Avery had held only two rings by title in his life. Yet, he had held many more than that. Many a time barons, and baroness had asked him to hold a ring. He understood why. He too had given his ring over to people in the past. Sometimes the burden was to great, and some had to step away. His fingers played with the small jewelry, as he looked it over. His hands slightly covered in sweat, he closed
them one more time covering the ring. Then standing, he turned from the window, and turned from the past. It was on this day that his close friend Zen, would no longer be a baron.

He took the ring to Val's house on the day of the tourney. Giving his young counterpart a soft smile he handed over the ring. He saw the soft look in his eyes when he produced it, almost one of relief. He gave his elder, even if by a few years, a nod, and then took off to put up the posting.
