Rules Changes

Post by DoS Archive » Tue Nov 02, 2004 7:40 pm

Lords and Ladies,

Over the past year and more several changes and/or clarifications to the rules as they stand have been suggested by patrons. After careful consideration and discussion, the Management has opted to implement some changes to the rules.

The new documents covering General Rules and Challenges will be posted following this notice. They take effect immediately, but are not retroactive. In other words, please do not refer to the revised rules for matters that are currently under discussion.

Things to note in particular:

1) The Neutral Rank has been removed. As no Barons currently stand as Neutral, this should not be particularly hard to implement.

2) Barons will be allowed to use a Best of Three format for their challenges. The Best of Three format a Baron may use is DIFFERENT from that the Overlord may use, so please take care to read the Challenge Section carefully on this subject. Again, these rules are not retroactive; this does not affect any challenge currently in place.

3) Warlords who voluntarily retire will be reinstated 30 days after they request such, effective the first weekend AFTER the 30-day period.

Please feel free to write to me or post with any questions or concerns.

Turienal Lodrelhai Castle
Assistant Supervisor/Historian
Duel of Swords

((OOC Note: There is a third section to the rules on the OOC board, for those of you who started here. And I'm terribly sorry for not getting these out earlier!))

Duel of Swords

Rules - 8/19/00

-----------------------------------------------------------

Sword fighting requires a great deal of strength, dexterity, and skill to be successful. But basically, when both opponents are equally matched the fight becomes a matter of who can out guess who first!

-----------------------------------------------------------

What and Where
---------------------------------------

The Duel of Swords is (usually) armed combat which takes place in an Arena in the basement of the Red Dragon Inn. Special events may be held in the Arena, in its adjoining Annex, or in any other location belonging to one of the three Dueling Sports as a whole. Because of the danger inherit in such a combat, a Ward is maintained around every Swords dueling ring to prevent permanent injury or death. Official duels take place during scheduled hours,
and must be called by an official of the sport. The official shall determine all scoring achieved during a match and declare the final results of the match in accordance with the terms below:

WIN: A win occurs when a dueler reaches FIVE POINTS and is a FULL POINT ahead of his opponent. OR, at the end of fifteen rounds, the dueler with AT LEAST a full point lead is declared a winner! (In the case of challenge matches, a match shall continue until one dueler has scored FIVE OR MORE points, and has a FULL POINT lead over his or her opponent. In no case shall a challenge match be restricted to fifteen rounds.)

TIES: A tie occurs when there is LESS than a full point lead at the end of 15 rounds.

FORFEITURE: Any dueler who exits the ring and does not return will be assessed a forfeit. It is at the discretion of the remaining duelist whether to accept a win or a tie. If both duelers leave and do not return then the score, as it stands at the last full round, will determine the winner in accordance with the standard rules, as though the duel had been fought to 15 rounds. In this case the official shall notify both duelers of the results by
missive.

Please note the following:

* This is NOT a fight to the death. Duelers are fully protected from permanent injury by the Ward of Gondar
* Before duelers can fight each other again they must each duel another opponent.

Ranking
------------------

Duelists rise in rank, according to their success with the sword. Ranks are assigned according to the number of wins over losses.

Rank Requirement
---- ---------------------------------
Commoner Less than TWO more wins than losses
Swordsman TWO more wins than losses
Master-at-Arms FIVE more wins than losses
Grand Master TEN more wins than losses
Warlord FIFTEEN more wins than losses
Baron By challenge from a Warlord (see below)
Overlord By challenge from a Warlord or Baron (see below)

Standings
----------------------

Standings will be posted approximately every week. All ranks, and the privileges associated with said rank (if any), are retained until new standings are posted.

Cycles
----------------

The Duel of Swords will run in three month cycles. Cycles will begin on the first weekends of March, June, September and December. Each cycle, records will be adjusted so that all losses will be subtracted from wins with ties thrown out. If there are more loses than wins the record is set at 0:0:0. Example: A record of 15-7-1 at the end of cycle would start the next with a record of 8-0-0; 15 - 7 = 8, ties thrown out. 0:0:0 records and duelers who
can no longer be located are removed from the standings at that time for the purpose of standings size control.

Warlords...
------------------------
* Warlords must maintain a Wins over Losses (WoL) record of at least 15.
* Warlords may challenge the Overlord or a Baron for there seats at any time subject to the "Universal Terms of Challenge".

Peer Wins:
-------------------------

"Peer Wins" are retroactive to the last time you challenged a Baron or the Overlord. Once a challenge is met, either against the Overlord or a Baron, the challenging Warlord's "Peer Wins" are zeroed out up to the date the challenge is issued. Baron's and the Overlord do NOT accumulate "Peer Wins" while holding title and start out with zero when unseated to the Warlord rank.

For Warlords who lose their Rank of Warlord and then reenter the rank, their Peer Wins are reset to zero.

Peer wins are not legal for use in issuing a challenge until posted with the weekly standings.

Baronial Challenges:
--------------------------------------------

A Warlord must provide the following list to the Standings Keeper when making a Baronial challenge...

List of 10 Peer Wins, the dates of those matches, and the caller who officiated.

Upon verification the challenge will proceed using the date of submission with regard to the "Universal terms of Challenge".

Overlord Challenges:
----------------------------------------------
A Warlord must provide the following list to the Standings Keeper when making an Overlord challenge...

List of 15 Peer Wins, the dates of those matches, and the caller who officiated.

Upon verification the challenge will proceed using the date of submission with regard to the "Universal Terms of Challenge".

The Warlord's Tournament...
-------------------------------------------------------------
* A Warlord's tournament will be held once every 3 months towards the end of the cycle.
* There will be a grace period of 24 days prior to each Warlord's tournament, during which no challenge may be issued to the Overlord.
* Date, time and particulars will be posted on the Duel of Swords message board and/or mailed to entering Warlords by the Standings Keeper, the DoS Supervisor, or his/her representative.
* The winner of the tournament will have the right to challenge the Overlord directly, superseding all other outstanding challenges. This challenge must be made within one week of the tournament's comclusion. This challenge is not subject to the "Right of Challenge" and cannot be denied for any reason and will follow the "Universal terms of Challenge" with regard to response and dueling date.
* Participants will be seated in the Tournament based upon their placement in the Warlord Rankings at the close of registration.
* The results of duels fought in the tournament are not counted in the regular standings.
* There is no standard format by which tournaments shall be conducted. The Standings Keeper, DoS Supervisor, or his/her representative shall determine whether the tournament will be single elimination, double elimination, Swiss-style, or any other format seen fit. The format to be used will be announced at the same time the date of the tournament is announced.

Retired Warlords...
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Warlords who retire will be removed from the Standings with record archived by the Standings Keeper. A letter to the Standings Keeper stating intent to retire is mandatory. To return, with record intact, a Warlord must write to the Standings Keeper and DoS Supervisor stating their intent to return. A waiting period of 30 days shall begin the day the Standings Keeper receives the request for Reinstatement, and the returning Warlord shall be
reinstated on the first standings after that period. This applies ONLY to retirement made with letter sent to the Standings Keeper. Returning Warlords, for Baronial and Overlord challenge purposes, are treated as New Warlords and start out with zero "Peer Wins".

Inactivity...
-----------------------

Any Warlord who is inactive for more than one complete cycle is subject to removal from the Standings with record archived by the Standings Keeper. This is not considered a retirement and is not subject to the 30-day waiting period for reinstatement.

Any other dueler who is inactive over the duration of a complete cycle is subject to removal from the Standings. Reinstatement with record intact are possible but only at the discretion of the DoS Supervisor. This includes the Overlord and Barons.

Please contact Valentine Evermeadow with any comments or questions.

Duel of Swords

Challenges and the Rights of the Upper Ranks
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Rules - 8/19/00

-----------------------------------------------------------

"Universal Terms of Challenge"...
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Where not specifically addressed all challenges are first come - first served. With the exception of challenges to Renegade Barons (see below), only the first challenge is considered vital and all others are void based on the order in which letters of challenge are received by the Standings Keeper and the dueler challenged. This means there are no queues of challenges.

All challenges and answer to challenge must be sent to the Standings Keeper, the Challenger, and the Baron or Overlord being challenged for purposes of notification and validation.

A challenge is not considered complete until the results are posted in the Standings. And where not specifically addressed all challenges must be answered within one week of validation (by the date and time the validation notice is sent out) and dueled within two weeks of the response. Any challenge not responded to within one week, setting a time and place, shall be considered an abdication.

Challenges, if not properly served, will be voided by the Standings Keeper. In the case of a voided challenge, the Challenger will have his or her right to challenge stripped for the remainder of the cycle as a penalty. This penalty will *not* take effect if the challenge is withdrawn before voided.

Alignment of Higher Ranks...
---------------------------------------

1. The Overlord shall be set as the Supreme Dueler of the Duel of
Swords.
2. There shall be 13 Barons.
3. There will be any number of Warlords who maintain a record of 15 wins
over loses.
4. Overlord and Barons are NOT subject to maintaining a 15 wins over
loses record.

Overlord...
------------------

1. Challenges to the Overlord are subject to the "Universal Terms of
Challenge" (see above) and may only be made once per cycle per
qualified dueler where not specifically addressed within these rules.
2. Has the right to select any duelist, with the exception of a Renegade
Baron, as champion to test any Challenger the Overlord deems unfit
to a "Test of Worthiness". This may be done only once per challenge.
The selected champion may refuse.
3. Except in specific circumstances, as outlined in the rules to follow,
the selected champion is at no risk of losing their title or rank.
4. If the Challenger is successful in the test then the challenge to the
Overlord seat will proceed within two weeks.
5. If the Champion is successful in the test AND
(a) the Champion is not a Loyal Baron and
(b) the Challenger is a Renegade Baron, the Champion
shall have the immediate right to challenge the Renegade
Baron for his/her title, regardless of the Champion's rank
or number of peer wins.
6. The Overlord may offer the Challenger a Best of Three series. This is an
alternative to the "Test of Worthiness" and may not be used in
conjunction with it. All three duels must take place within the time
specified by the "Universal Terms of Challenge" and the first to win two
duels shall be victorious.
7. Overlord may intercede on behalf of challenged Loyal Barons
without risk of any kind. If successful the Challenger must
accede defeat.
8. Can, at anytime, switch the alignment of a Baron with reason given in
writing to all Barons and to the Standings Keeper provided a WoL
record of 15 is maintained.
9. If the Overlord should banish a Loyal to a Renegade alignment then
the Overlord must accept an immediate challenge of title if issued by
that Baron.
10. When unseated by a Baron the Overlord is aligned at the discretion of
the new Overlord.
11. When an Overlord is unseated by a Warlord they are placed in the
ranks, commoner to Warlord, based on their wins to loses record.
12. Should the Overlord retire a tournament of all Barons will be held to
determine the new Overlord. The impending Baron vacancy is filled by
the winner of the next scheduled Warlord's Tournament.

Barons...
--------------

1. Each Baron shall receive a ring as a symbol of their station.
2. All 13 Barons are considered equal in title.
3. Barons can either be aligned with the Overlord or not and respectively
titled Loyal or Renegade.
4. New Barons must proclaim their alignment upon accepting the ring. If
not it is at the discretion of the Overlord.
5. When an Overlord is dethroned all Barons must declare alignment
within one week, to the Standings Keeper, or their alignment is set by
the new Overlord.
6. When a Baron is unseated they are placed in the ranks, from
commoner to Warlord, based on their current record.
7. Should a Baron retire the vacancy is filled by the winner of the next
scheduled Warlord's Tournament.
8. May choose to fight a challenge in a Best of Three format. The Challenger
may NOT refuse the Best of Three format offered by a Baron. However,
if the Overlord interceeds on behalf of a Loyal Baron, the Best of Three
format may not be used.

Loyal Barons...
-------------------------

1. Loyal Barons may intercede on challenges to the Overlord,
provided the Overlord accepts the intercession.
2. Loyals who intercede may lose their title if:
(a) Defeated by a Renegade Baron's champion in a "Right of
Challenge." (see below)
(b) The Renegade Baron goes on to defeat the Overlord
(c) There are no currently empty baronies and
(d) The Renegade Baron chooses to award his/her champion the
Loyal's ring as a reward for services.
All four conditions must be met for the Loyal Baron to lose their title as
a result of interceding.
3. If successful in defeating the Challenger, the Loyal Baron has the
special opportunity to challenge the Overlord. This challenge may be
issued immediately. If the Overlord defends his title in this instance
and then realigns the Loyal to Renegade he must accept an
immediate rechallenge.
4. Loyal Barons may change their alignment at anytime, in writing, to all
Barons, the Overlord and the Standings Keeper.
5. Any Loyal may challenge an Overlord whose standings record falls
below 15 wins over loses.
6. Loyals cannot otherwise challenge the Overlord.
7. Loyals need only defend their title once per calendar month.

Renegade Barons...
-----------------------------

1. Renegades cannot intercede on challenges to the Overlord.
2. Renegades may intervene on intercessions made by Loyal Barons
Barons OR may intervene for a Challenger in a "Test of Worthi-
ness". By doing so the Renegade must duel the appointed champion at
the designated time of the challenge. If the Renegade wins then the
original challenge must go forward. If the Renegade is defeated then a
"Test of Worthiness" may proceed immediately. Renegades may intercede
at anytime up to but not after the first round of a "Test of Worthiness" has
been called.
3. Renegade intercession takes priority over a Renegade Baron's champion.
The first Renegade Baron to state intention to intercede shall have
precedence. Though not a requirement, the time and date of the sending
of a letter delivered to the Standings Keeper declaring the Baron's intention
to intercede shall be the only proof accepted on this issue.
4. Renegades may petition for Loyal alignment pending approval
of the Overlord. The Overlord may refuse the realignment for
any given reason.
5. Renegades can challenge the Overlord at any time, but only once per
cycle.
6. Renegade challenges to the Overlord will follow the "Universal Terms of
Challenge".
7. "Right of Challenge": Renegades may appoint a warlord champion IF
the Overlord elects to use the "Test of Worthiness" against them.
The appointed champion may decline.
8. If a Renegade Baron's champion fights the Overlord's champion in
a "Right of Challenge", and the Renegade's champion is successful,
the Renegade shall go on to fight the Overlord. If the Renegade's
champion is defeated, the Renegade must then fight the "Test of
Worthiness" as if no "Right of Challenge" had been declared.
9. If the Renegade's champion wins the "Right of Challenge" AND the
Renegade goes on to defeat the Overlord, then the Renegade Baron
MAY grant the champion a barony as reward for services rendered.
(a) The awarded barony shall be any barony not currently occupied.
(b) If all baron seats are filled, the Renegade Baron may grant the
champion either:
i. The barony of the ex-Overlord's champion or
ii. The barony that the ex-Overlord would otherwise inherit from
the Renegade Baron. This decision is at the Renegade
Baron's discretion.
10. Renegade Barons are open to immediate challenge by the Overlord's
champion, regardless of queue's, if they are defeated in a "Test of
Worthiness"
11. Renegades are open to any and all challenges from Warlords. A first
challenge must be fought within two weekends and any pending
challenges must be fought at a rate no less than one a week until the
pending challenges are depleted.

"Test of Worthiness" duels:
--------------------------------------------

The wins and loses of "Test of Worthiness", "Right of Challenge", and Renegade intercession duels do not apply to the regular standings.

"Baron's Council"
-----------------------------------

1. A Baron's Council shall be convened in the occurrence of a Baron or
the Overlord retiring while a challenge is pending or in the case of a
forfeit.
2. The Baron's Council shall consist of all current Barons and the
Overlord.
3. The Baron's Council shall consist of 12 voting members and 1
overseer. The Overseer shall vote only in the case of a tie among the
other 12 members. The number of voting members may be less than
12 but there shall always be 1 overseer.
4. The overseer of the Council shall be the Overlord, unless it is the title
of Overlord that is at issue, in which case the senior most Baron shall
fill the position. The overseer should help direct the council and push
it towards a conclusion.
5. When necessary, the Supervisor may step in to further guide the
council and lie out their choices. Choices will include, but not be
limited to;
(a) Granting the Challenger the victory by default
(b) Appointing another to fight against the Challenger in place of
the person challenged
(c) Voiding the challenge and returning the Challenger's peer wins
6. Decisions of the Council must pass by majority vote.
7. The Council's decisions shall be final and may be overturned only by
the Supervisor, with approval of the Dueling Coordinator.

Saving Clause
---------------------------
Any dispute that is not clearly covered under the preceeding rules shall fall under the jurisdiction of the Duel of Swords Supervisor, to be ratified by the Dueling Coordinator.

"* This is NOT a fight to the death. Duelers are fully protected from permanent injury by the Ward of Gondar"

I suppose Dalamar broke the rules, then.
