Greetings.

Some of you may remember many months ago, when I gave a breakdown of Barons' tenures, and other trivia.

It's that time again.

10 LONGEST INDIVIDUAL BARONIAL REIGNS (in days) (* - currently holding ring) (# in parentheses indicates ring)
551 Adeena Maeax (6, 1st reign) - on February 11, 1998, the number of days since the awarding of the
399 Percival (3) Nine rings will finally be twice Adeena's first reign.
357 Phlag (4)
250 Ford Prefect (1)
237 AJ Bird (2)*
216 Halo (4)
211 Athlstan (7)
205 Devion Silverblade (3)
200 Jeffrey Oakenshield (7)
200 Iain MacKenzie (8)

The longest holders of the two rings not represented above:
189 Kaprielle d'Argent (5)
152 Daegarth Mithmellon (9)

Tenure of current barons (other than AJ):
118 Ellisa Morgan (7)*
95 Luthien Tinuviel (9)*
43 Adeena Maeax (6)*
31 Philip Kardinal (4)*
21 Daegarth Mithmellon (8)*
20 Kaprielle d'Argent (1)*
18 G'nort Espelande Gneesmacher Dragoon Talanador (5)*
17 Heath Duncan Connor McCormack (3)*

(brief editorial conclusion: Over half the rings have been in the hands of their holder less than a month; this indicates, to me, challenges are coming too rapidly.)

10 LONGEST TENURES AS BARON (over multiple rings)
594 Adeena Maeax (6,6)*
449 Percival (6,3)
357 Phlag (4)
313 Jeffrey Oakenshield (7,7,9,5)
290 Feadur Feamegil (1,3)
276 Daegarth Mithmellon (7,9,2,8)*
270 Iain MacKenzie (5,8,9)
250 Ford Prefect (1)
237 AJ Bird (2)*
235 Billy Ray (5)

(continued)

(Sorry for adding a second post... couldn't open my post to reply to it.)

Phlag and Adeena served together as Baron for 341 days.
Percival, Adeena, and Iain served together as Baron, as a trio, for the entire 200 days of Iain's hold on the Eighth Ring.
Percival, Adeena, Iain, and Athlstan served concurrently as Baron for 172 days. (This one blows my mind.)
Those four, with Daegarth, served together for 137 days.

That period was one of extreme stability with the rings, obviously; Feadur Feamegil and Juan Ramirez served with the aforementioned five for 92 days, meaning that there was a period of three months where only two rings were contested. Given the parties involved, respect must certainly have played a part in this.

MOST CHALLENGES ISSUED AGAINST, one reign
6 Billy Ray (5)
6 Adeena Maeax (6, 1st reign)
5 AJ Bird (2)*
5 Damien Cetran (4)
5 Ford Prefect (1)
5 Jeffrey Oakenshield (7)

MOST DEFENSES FOUGHT, one reign:
5 Billy Ray (5)
5 AJ Bird (2)*
5 Ford Prefect (1)
4 Adeena Maeax (6, 1st reign)
4 Jeffrey Oakenshield (7)

Jeffrey has, by far, fought in the most challenge defenses, going 5-4 in nine battles.

FUTILITY: Outside Jeffrey, the three people who have held three rings (Elijah, Iain, and Daegarth) suffer the distinction of never having successfully defended their titles. Elijah retired one of his, however, and Daegarth surrendered one of his to ascend to Overlord. (Who says I can't kick myself?)

VACANT RINGS:
Ring 1 - vacant 152 days (16% of the time)
Ring 2 - vacant 7 days (1% of the time)
Ring 3 - vacant 0 days (0% of the time)
Ring 4 - vacant 7 days (1% of the time)
Ring 5 - vacant 51 days (5% of the time)
Ring 6 - vacant 14 days (2% of the time)
Ring 7 - vacant 93 days (10% of the time)
Ring 8 - vacant 131 days (14% of the time)
Ring 9 - vacant 148 days (15% of the time)

Rings have remained vacant 603 of the 959 days since the Rings were first awarded. This means 63% of the time, on average, one ring has been vacant; each ring, on average, has been vacant 7% of the time.

Presented for your entertainment,

~irm

Draven,

Iain's record of that was most Baron "defenses", as for total Challenges, Jeff would surely have a larger record than 5-4::chuckles:: Prolly like another 4 or 5 wins.

Iain,

I have a few questions. Who held the rings just before they went vacant and why did they go vacant? Retirement, disappearance, stepping down, and so on? What about a percentage breakdown of those that let a ring go more than one time?

Those are startling percentages of times the rings have gone without a holder. I would like to know more.

Thank you.

Morgan;

In most cases, the rings were abandoned by their holders and left vacant till the following Warlords tournament. Though this explanation lacks dates and specifics, it is, I believe, the correct answer.

In response to the query:

The first ring was left vacant when Feadur Feamegil retired after reigning for 141 days with no challenges. Billy Ray claimed it at the next tourney. It was again left vacant when Ford retired after five defenses.

The second ring was left vacant for a week when Martigan Crow won the only Baron's Tourney to date to replace Gnimish as Overlord. However: Not counted in the vacancy dates for the second ring is a period of nearly a month between the time Tarl Cabot issued an unanswered challenge to Lord Harvest, and the time he was actually granted the ring.

The third ring, of course, has never lain vacant.

The fourth ring was forfeited twice by Shade 9, and was vacant for a week when Phlag vanished before being claimed by Damien Cetran.

The fifth ring was vacated by Elijah when he retired after losing to Athlstan in an Overlord challenge, then claimed by Kaprielle.

The sixth ring was vacated by Torquillian Aspendale when he retired in opposition to serving as a Baron with Feadur, and claimed by Percival.

The seventh ring... was abandoned by Ulath, then claimed by Dirk Random, who then refused to answer a challenge from Athlstan...

The eighth was retired by Midnight Blue, claimed by me, then retired by Wicked Deth after... losing in an Overlord challenge to Athlstan (hmm...). Then, Ulath claimed it and failed to answer a challenge from Raiyko... *then* it was retired by Jonathan Ringo, to be claimed by Tarl Cabot. Dex Montoya is the only person to ever challenge for this ring to earn it, *and* lose the ring in a challenge.

The ninth ring was retired by Moralitor and claimed by Phantom DOS; later, it was stripped from Zen Rising, who failed to answer Daegarth's challenge, and remained vacant when Adeena was appointed by the Baron's council to defend it and was victorious, and claimed by me.

Shade and Ulath are the only people to relinquish a ring twice without losing a duel to do so.

Iain,

Excellent work m'friend... With your permission, I would like to use some of the statistics you have listed here in the Historical Center. They would make a nice addition to the information already there.

There are, however, two small clarifications that should be added to your work. Minor things really, that should in no way detract from the effort. They are:

> The sixth ring was vacated by Torquillian Aspendale when he retired in opposition
> to serving as a Baron with Feadur, and claimed by Percival.

From my recollection, the problem wasn't so much that Feadur was a baron (though Aspendale did not care for that either) but rather that he was the Overlord's champion. Being racial enemies, Aspendale finally retired his ring in disgust and, shortly after, left the Arena altogether.

> The seventh ring... was abandoned by Ulath, then claimed by Dirk Random, who
> then refused to answer a challenge from Athlstan...

Dirk didn't so much refuse to answer as simply failed to. Instead of answering the challenge he gave his ring to Kairee as a gift and left RhyDin. That caused a greater stir than a simple refusal because Kairee then refused to give Athlstan the ring.... all of which caused him to name the barony "The Misbegotten Seat." The law suit brought by Brandon Fox to have Kairee declared a baron also sprung from that incident...
