Another Change.... and a Promise.

Avery had been up all night. Which made it the second such night in a row that he hadn’t slept. He was tired.... very tired. Yet as he laid upon the ground in his house trying to fall asleep, he could only stay awake. Thinking of what the last week or so had brought to him, and what Summer had said the night before, is what kept him up. Such a little thing had now escalated into a bigger deal for him. He was
expecting the knock that came to his door. Calling for the person to enter, he stood up and crossed over to the table of the two room house. Really it wasn’t even a two room house, but a sheet that separated his sleeping area from the rest of the house. Christopher, his messenger boy stepped into the house rubbing his eyes.

“You sent for me Sir?”

“Yes... I need you to write another note for me.” Avery sat down on the ground next to the table. One chair was pulled out and the boy sat in it.

“I figured as much. That’s what I do after all.”

“I thank you for it too Christopher....” he smiled to the kid who now sat at the table looking at the paper that was in front of him. “....I always tell myself that tomorrow will be the day I learn to read, and write.....” Shaking his head at the thought. “.....But I really have no use for it. After all... I have live 19 or so years without really needing it.” He laughed at himself, as he thought of his upbringing.

“It is no problem Avery. I mean... how else would I get permission to leave the boys home? It is only because of you that I am able to leave the orphanage. So I have much to thank you for too.”

Nodding to the boy, Avery turned his head and stared at the wall. The boy picked up the pen and held it, ready to record the barons thoughts. Avery started to speak, and the words traveled to Christopher’s hands, and thus the paper.

Overlord Dalamar Ar’daumon,
Barons Council,
Officials,

I will start by giving an apology. I would apologize to the officials for what I am about to do, as the ink is still wet on the standings. Yet, I once again am going to change my stance. Not because I think I choose the wrong alignment with my first change, but because new issues come about. Undoubtedly you all now know my views on the issue of Neutrality. I hold one view as others hold another view. These differences in views, as I see it, spilt the
DoS community in half. I would be content to stay a Neutral Baron throughout all this too, but for one thing. I came to this realization last night. It doesn’t matter what my view is, as long as the person in charge holds another view. For Dal holds the final “Rights” within his hands. So I can either live with him going against my views, or do something about it. For if I was in Dal’s position then I would be able to hold the final “rights.” Much
like a two party system, those that have the final power are the ones that control. Now I was fine to live with this until Summer said something to me. She told me to follow my heart. Well.... my heart tells me that my views are right on this matter, and thus the following. As a neutral baron I would now challenge Dal. But Wait....there is more. Because I am not going to challenge him. I am going to change my alignment once again. Which is why I
started off with an apology. I am going to become a Renegade Baron. Now before anyone Gasps, and thinks that I am doing this because of what has been said.....Wait.
My reason for this is simple. We have two different views here. it started as a small thing, but now I see it as a bigger thing. One that easily separates me from Dal. I think it only natural that I would want my View to have more power in the situation. The one way that this could happen is if I were to be in Dal’s spot. Now many out there know that I could challenge as a Neutral. yet this is different. The only reason a Neutral should challenge is
to keep the balance....and not let the power get out of hand. This is a different matter. This is because I want my view to hold the power. There is no way to keep the balance between this Argument. You are either for it, or against it. So I change because I am against it. If I could find a way to keep the balance then I would stay neutral, but I can’t. I feel in my heart, that I am right. I feel strongly about this too. And I have the Courage, or
stupidity to follow this with action. For there are those out there that hold the same beliefs but do nothing about it, but state them. Now for the second part.... the promise.

A challenge. I will challenge Dal...if indeed he is still OL when the time comes. I have stated my reasons. But I hold off now, because of the Tournament that is to take place soon. I respect the rules that say none shall challenge...after all, I live by the rules. But after the tournament, and after the match between the tourney winner, if Dal is still OL, I will challenge. You might wonder why I change now then. I do so because my thoughts are that
of a renegade. I would not want Dal to banish me to Renegade.....and give me the chance for the immediate challenge. That is the cowards way out. I will simply wait....if that is what I must do. Now I accept my fate, and know that I will probably face many challenges before I face Dal. Yet I will face him...maybe not as a baron....but as a Warlord, but I will face him. I believe in my views this strongly, and have the courage to follow my heart. So I
give you my promise, and intent to challenge, when I am able to as a Renegade Baron.

Avery Shiv Blade
Baron of the 6th
Young Grasshopper

Avery put his name to the paper and then closed his eyes. Christopher gathered the paper up and turned to the Baron.

“Shall I deliver this to everyone, and then post it?”

Avery gave the boy a nod, still lying on the ground. “Yes... please.” The boy left to do just this, and before he closed the door to the small house, the Baron was sound asleep....a sleep that finally did not run away from him.... as now his mind was finally at ease.

Baron Avery,

Know that you have painted upon thyself a huge bullseye. For as a Renegade you are a threat to the Overlord's position, as is Evan. Dalamar will send his yes men or women as the case may be to try and remove thee from thy position of potential power. I advise watching your back as a friendly advice from one who is a friend. I told you that I thought you were premature to challenge for Baron when you did, because once you get involved in the
politics of Swords it creates the snowball effect. You have handled yourself well, but sometimes just sitting back to get to know the community before flinging yourself into the maelstorm of events in this community is wise so you don't end up on the spear head before another dueler's residence. I wish thee the best of luck in your new path against the current established power of Swords. You will need it.

Honor to thyself, Respect to others,

Anyone want to take bets on how many more times he'll change alignment?

Does anyone wish to take bets on how disrespectful some people will be about a decision that is not only well made, but none of their business?

It seems to me that being loyal to the OL is not actually being loyal to the man who holds the title. It is about being loyal to the ideals and values of the OL more than anything else. Should the Overlord, be he Dalamere or anyone else, make a radical series of changes, as has been recently done, is it not just and correct for a baron such as Avery who swore either loyalty, or neutrality to Dal's ideals and values, to amend his stance as Dal has
seemingly amended his? I feel it is his right, in order to stay loyal to his own self, and to what he feels is in the best interest of the sport to do just that. Threats, swift and blind actions, and petty side comments will never change the truth, and the truth is that loyalty to oneself comes before loyalty to *all* others. And be it so that Avery has painted himself a large bright red bullseye to wear wherever he goes, Dal has done the same,
and though he may have friends in high places, it seems that he has made himself enemies in high places as well.

Perhaps the man who makes a target out of himself for the greater good should be hailed and not outcast, and the man who manipulates the rules to serve as a security blanket should be outcast and not hailed.

Change is in the wind.
