Challenge to the Tenth Ring.
From: rdigryphn@aol.com (RDI Gryphn)
Date: 14 Aug 1998 02:25:10 EDT
Lords and Ladies.
On this eve I was called upon to officiate the challenge that was placed against the holder of the Tenth Ring, Loyal Baron Var Medici-Giovani.
Loyal Baron Var Medici-Giovanni dueled under his banner of silver blades on a field of ocean blue. At his side stood his son, Noble Morgan Medici-Giovanni, his second, and Lady Noelle Medici-Giovanni, his wife and Lady of Honor.
The challenger, WarLord Agrenish Preescott duels under his banner of "hot pink over a striped green and chisel grey with a penquin over it." None stood as his second, and the Lady Lily Lesprit stood as his "Flower Girl."
1) ( FCP-TH ) The challenger begins with a quick assault of both words and weapons... but his words fall on deaf ears and his thrust falls to the Baron's fanciest of circular parries.
2) ( SL-LC ) A great risk, the Baron stalks forward, his blade leaping to the attack... yet his wild swing cannot strike before the challenger's low cut knocks him away.
3) ( HC-HC ) The Baron brings his rapier high, striking forward... yet the challenger's dagger also move to the attack and the blades merely clatter together for naught.
4) ( SS-FSS ) The Baron steps away to the left... and the challenger steps quickly to the right... yet niether gains advantage or point.
5) ( TH-FDk ) The challenger backs away, swiftly ducking low... but not swiftly enough, for the Baron's rapier thrusts in, catching his shoulder.
6) ( LC-TH ) Pressing his assault, the Baron sweeps his rapier low... but the challenger leaps over the blade, striking true with his knife to tie the match once more.
7) ( TH-SH ) The Baron charges in, rapier poised to strike. Yet the challenger is ready, stopping the assault and turning it back.
8) ( FDk-LC ) The swift defencive crouch of the Baron serves only to bring him closer to the challengers blade.
9) ( LC-HC ) Moving forward, the Baron lashes out to the attack, striking the challenger low... But for naught, as the challenger has struck out high, scoring as well.
Thus did the challenger, Agrenish Preescott, defeat the defender of the Tenth Ring of the Duel of Swords, Var Medici-Giovani.
When asked repeatedly for his declaration of alignment, the new Baron refused to answer... The DoS supervisor and the Overlord were informed.
Witnessed this Thirteenth day of the Eighth month of the Ninty-eighth year of this century.

Collie reads over the notice and posts this,
Var,
You put up a good defense and set a fine example for your young second. May he one day stand in the ring with respect and honor.

Agrenish,
Did you just not answer or say you wouldn't declare at that time? If it is the former that's a tad rude don't you think? Now.. if you said you weren't ready to declare, yet.. I believe that's a whole other kettle of fish. Have the rules changed regarding the Barons having time to choose?

::Takes note of Collie's question.::
From the Challenge Rules, as placed for public perusal on the first day of the fifth month of this year.....
"New Barons must proclaim their alignment upon accepting the ring. If not it is at the discretion of the Overlord."

::a copy of her recent mailing to the Overlord and all current Barons waves in the breeze::
Overlord,
As I believe ye were informed, Lady Drakewyn Anastasia Alabaster Silvertree (a/k/a Grphyn) officiated at the recent challenge match between Warlord Agrenish Preescott and Baron Var Medici-Giovanni. The outcome of that match was declared a win in favor of the Warlord.
Upon receivin' the title from Lady Drake, the new Baron was asked repeatedly, and in the end refused, to annoucce 'is alignment. Thus in accordance with the rules of Duel of Swords the Baron's alignment is left yer discretion. Would ye please be so kind as to inform that Standin's Keeper of yer decision at yer earliest convenience?
With gratitude,
~Helix Deverrey Girvin

::pens a simple, short note...standing upon tiptoes to post it upon the ancient board::
M'lords & Ladies,
I've always stood proudly at my husband's side. I watched Var rise through the ranks of dueling, and while my beloved husband may have lost a ring and cherished title, he holds things far more dear, in my view. Var retains his dignity and honor...those essential qualities sadly lacking in the new baron.
Lady Noelle Medici-Giovanni
::adds:: Var, I love you...always and forever.

>>Did you just not answer or say you wouldn't declare at that time?<<
Collie, I just told Draky that I didn't want to waste my good mood on thinking about Dal's political standings. I also told her that I would mail my choice to Dally and Helix.
Now I hear Dally gets to choose for me. Good, now I don't have to waste my time writting a letter.
