Challenge for the 12th
From: str8clutch@aol.com (Str8Clutch)
Date: 15 Aug 1998 22:16:29 EDT
Roland Sal Roa,
Although I have passed many milestones in my dueling career already, the time has come for me to attempt to pass another. It is with great respect that I present this challenge to one of the finest duelers in the Duel of Swords for the right to wear the 12th baronial ring. Although I haven't been around for long, I feel I am ready to challenge for a ring. My reasons for this challenge are as follows.
The main reason is that I wish to test my skills in a challenge match against a dueler of your abilities. I would like to know how talented I am at this sport, and nothing tests one's skills in the ring as well as a challenge match. You have proven that you are a great dueler by your accomplishments in the history books. I simply wish to test my skills against yours. A second reason is that I have never met you in the ring before. One of
the best ways to learn in the DoS is to duel new people. Whether I win or not, I will hopefully become a better dueler as a result of this. Third is that I am a very competitive person by nature. I always strive to be the best at what I'm doing. I think this is human nature. Although the title of baron isn't the highest in the DoS, it would satisfy my competitive attitude should I be successful in this challenge.
I hope I have not offended anyone in making this challenge. If I have, I apologize in advance. I now submit my Peer Wins which have gained me the right to make this challenge.

Hmmmmmm. Can't really think of what to say. Don't know either that well, and I like both of them from what I have seen. Tough call. I will take the easy way out.
Clutch, good luck. I think that if you win you can be a good Baron.
Roland, good luck to you too. You have proven your ability to wear the ring, and whatever happens I know you will do your best.
Good luck to both of you. And may the best man win.

To all it may concern,
I am not in any way biased as to the outcome of the challenge, but there is something I feel I must say. The disrespectful and unkind remarks that certain people are making about Clutch are uncalled for and inexcusable. Statements like "I didn't even know he was a Walord," and "And has enough peer wins too?" are unworthy of any of us.
Yes, he is a Warlord. Not only is he a Warlord, but as anyone who cares to see the most recent Warlord ranks can see for themselves, he is in the top bracket. Holding at 12th place with such names as Huma Dragonbane, and Lucian. In a three way tie for 12th. He also has the peer wins. I see no reason for anyone here to insult or belittle him in any way.
I will get off my soapbox now. It just made me mad. If I have offended anyone, I wish to apologize.
I reiterate: good luck to both Roland and Clutch. May the best man win!

Percival, he deserves everything he's getting. I beat him, and the only reason I didn't beat him by a worse margin was because I overestimated him. He's high in the Warlord rankings in part because he duels enough, and probably because a lot of other people expect a little more head work out of him. He runs in, cuts them a few times before they're ready, and there's a win. Remember, overestimation means he's
terrible, but no one expects it.
But why am I rooting against him? I should cheer him on. If he wins, we'll see the first Commoner Baron in history. Maybe not technically, but still.

Come now everyone. Why cant you just wish them good luck. I mean i am friends with Roland, and i wish him the best of luck. Yet i would not say half the things you ae saying to Clutch. No offense, but on any given day a person can win, or lose. I have slaughtered opponets one day, only to get killed the next. ( I am not afraid to admit that way back when....in the two weeks it took for me to make WL, Clutch
beat me. I guess i suck too eh? I must just be really lucky... thats all.)) So dont ever use that excuses again. Just because people dont actually pay attention to others outside the "circle" of people in the Arena, doesn't mean that those out side are bad. Clutch has the right to challenge, and he did so. Just because we are all blind as to see him come up in the ranks should mean nothing. The reason i say this is that i know Clutch. We started at
the same time. I went faster, but then wouldn't that make me the first commoner Baron. I don't know what you are implying by that. Yes he is a WL, and yes he has per wins. And some good per wins at that. So all of you please get off of your high arse horses, and come back down to reality. He deserves the chance to challenge, and challenge he shall.

You're more accurate in this statement than you know, Baron Avery. Clutch does indeed have the right to challenge, and no one is disputing that. But many people, including myself, do feel that the position of Baron involves leadership. It's a role in the community, a role in the spotlight. If you don't wish to become involved with the patrons who frequent the Arena, why are you trying for a ring?
Personally, I'd never cheer for someone I wouldn't recognize if I bumped into them on the street, no matter how much I hated their opponent. Because part of being a Baron is participation, not just getting a ring and hiding somewhere hoping no one will challenge you. Those that have commented have a problem with Clutch's low profile, and I agree with them. I'm not going to offer insults myself, because as I said, I've never even met the guy.

Warlord Clutch,
First, allow me to congradulate you apon obtaining the rank of Warlord and defeating the peers you did to gain the right of challenge. I hope that your first official challenge is a memoriable one as well. I also wish to thank you for selecting myself as an appropriate challenge, as aposed to the Warlord Tournament later this month, and the good natured manner in which you issued challenge. It appears I have been fortunate once again
with a good-natured challenge.
With that, I hope this display remains honorable and under the same competitive terms as you have stated. You shall have word on the challenge's details apon comfirmation of your peer wins. Untill then, Warlord.

Just because you can do a thing, does not nessacerily mean you must do that thing.
I stand by my opinions. Ten Peer wins, in my opinion, isn't nearly enough to qualify you to challenge. In my Opinion, there should be something done about that. I've seen people challenge with ten PWs that have a rather unimpressive record against Warlords in general. Clutch may be 12th in the standings, but he's also only at 50%, having lost to the same amount of Warlords as he's defeated. I recall having a long debate over this with
Arlingond when I was a Baron.
I don't see the worth of this one as yet.
That's my opinion. You don't have to like it. If you don't, I don't care. we're all entitled to our thoughts.
