Elspeth had told the man that she wanted to go far away where no one knew here, where she could make a new life. He nodded and grinned a toothless grin, "I know jest th' place fer ya," he croaked. "Gud, 'ere's th' gold," she said irritably as she handed him the bag.
The journey by boat was long, there were few other people along which suited her fine. She needed the rest, the solitude. Trouble was, it also gave her too much time to reflect on recent times, and her thoughts drifted back...
Happiness, 'twas what was remembered most of all. These days, weren't nothin' new about a Campbell marryin' a MacCleod, so there was no trouble in that. Seamus was a wonderful man, full o' life an' a hard worker. Together, for three years, they worked an' played an' loved. Unfortunately, try as they might, they could not produce a child. This caused some stir among th' village folk, but they ignored it.
In short time, they found out why a child would not come. Seamus got sick... where once he had been healthy, he was now unable t' stand. A fancy doctor from England visited, this was no longer the 17th century. He said Seamus wouldn't recover and indeed had been sick for years, just it didn't show up 'til now.
It was a horrible year while Elspeth cared for Seamus while he slowly died. After he was buried, she dressed in black, and endured th' sympathy of th' village folk. But now she couldn't take that anymore....and nearly a year after his death, she's looking for space.
Her thoughts brought her back to the present, and she watched the shores of RhyDin coming into view. The captain meanwhile watched the young woman who had firey hair and glittering green eyes. "With that there sword, yew could duel fer sport, ya know," came the croaking voice of the captain. "What aire ya on about," she questioned, and she knew he was referring to the sword she had wrapped and tied to the pack on her back. He responded with a
chuckle which sounded like rocks grating together, "Red Dragon Inn, Duel a Swords...thems even got rooms fer rent."
She looked at him a long moment, wondered why he came so highly recommended if he were dishonest, and nodded once. Turning her eyes back to the approaching shoreline, she waited to disembark. Her thoughts looked towards the future. "I dinnae want tae fight fer blood, but fer sport....," her thoughts trailed off with a mental shrug.
A place to rest for awhile...
