(Jola) The letter she never wanted to see.

Donnal, one of Ulath's finest guards, met Jola after her unsuccessful challenge to Baron Zen Rising. Jola was quite surprised to see him, as he was supposed to be off with Ulath and the children transdimensionally, for protection. Her belly knotted knowing that something must be wrong to have brought him here.

"Jola," he began, though it made him uncomfortable. She disliked being called "Lady" or "M'lady" and insisted on the men using her first name. "Are ye well this eve?" he asked quietly.

"Donnal, I'm sure ya didn't come all this way to ask me that. What's wrong?"

Donnal shifted uncomfortably inside his cloak before looking up into the eyes of the woman he must bring such dire news to. "It's M'Lord Fici, Jola," he said softly, wincing at the sudden fear in her eyes, "He's passed on."

Jola couldn't speak. She paled, and sat down solidly on the ground where she'd stood. After an agonizing moment of silence, she looked up to Donnal with tears beginning to stream from her eyes, "The children?" "They are fine, Jola!" Donnal replied with urgency, eager to ease at least a little worry, "They are quite well, this was not anything that involved the babes."

Jola dropped her face into her hands and her shoulders heaved as she cried silently. Donnal didn't quite know what to do, so he crouched down beside her, and kept a watch out for any approaching. "Take me home, Donnal, and then you can tell me what happened."

The saddened man helped Jola to her feet, and then walked with her to the keep. He so hated being the bearer of such awful news.

Upon arrival at the Fici home, Jola stopped and simply stared at the keep. "Tell me now, Donnal," she said quietly, without turning to look at him.

Donnal withdrew a letter from his cloak and handed it to her. "It's from M'Lord Fici."

Jola stared at the letter for a few long moments before taking it from Donnal with shaking hands. She opened it slowly and moved over to the torchlight so she could read the writing she now saw to be her husbands...though weak.

-------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- --------

My Dearest Wife,

I had expected to live with you until we grew old, and died naturally. I had expected to watch the children grow and have families of their own. I wanted these things.
I did not expect to become ill, and be forced to leave you like this. It is rather ironic that assassins, thieves and cutthroats have not been able to kill me, yet I succumb to a reasonably minor illness such as this, my lungs being unable to sustain my life for much longer.
I leave all my possessions to you, my love. I leave all my undying love, and my pride and respect as well. I will be watching you and Aleath and Claire until such time as you join me once more.
I love you.

Ulath

-------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- --------

"Illness? Lungs?" Jola asked Donnal, her eyes overflowing with tears once more, her face swollen and wet. "Pneumonia, said the doctor," was his explanation.

Jola screamed out her anguish, and if any were around in RhyDin this night, they perhaps heard the cry of a broken heart and ruptured soul.

Dhria jumped out of bed and ran to the window, then to the front door after hearing the ungodly scream from outside. She threw open the door to see Jola on her knees in the torchlight, with some man standing over her. "Hey!" she yelled, as men rushed from around the house to tackle the cloaked stranger. Jola remained hunched over, face in hands.

The guards jumped back when they recognized the struggling man as Donnal, their second in command. They snapped to attention and Dhria ran out to her sister. Donnal spoke to the approaching lady clad in nightclothes. "Ulath has died, M'Lady Dhria."

Stunned, she wrapped her arms around her sister and began giving orders. "Let's get her inside. And send a note to The Overlord and umm...Gnort Dragoon-Talanador. Let them know what's happened." They proceeded to guide Jola into the house.

Dhria's depression was not even a memory now.

::Cassius walked amongst the blowing leaves one night, contemplating nothingness, and feeling rather somber. The wind blew on his face and he looked to the sky. There, amongst the atmosphere, his ears beheld a whisper of a moan.::

My God in Heaven, the sound of a broken heart. . .

::he trailed off his path, returning home, silent tears for a sorrow still unknown to him.::
