A Challenge for the 2nd Ring

This is to announce publically what I, minutes ago, sent word of privately to the Baron Ajay Bird. Namely that I, the Warlord Percival Marchand de Clermont of House Rising, wish to issue correct, formal, and respectful challenge for the 2nd Baronial ring of the Duel of Swords.
I have thought about challenging for some time, even since before I became truly active in the community, and the question was always the same. Who? This question remained unanswered, or at best partially answered, until this morning when the decision came upon me. The Baron Bird is a Loyal Baron, the most senior Baron of the Council, and, to my knowledge, went at least a full cycle without receiving any challenges. While I admit his immense
skill and his reputation, I feel that after so long a time such skill should be tested. It is improper that the most senior of our Barons should go so long without a challenge. While he cannot be blamed for this, one cannot challenge those who did not challenge him. The only way to remedy the situation is by challenging him.
So, this is what I have done. This post is merely to inform the public that the missive of challenge has been sent. A list of the required peer wins has been sent to the Standings Keeper and to the Baron. It will also be included at the end of this post.
I realize I am likely to draw criticism from some sources for my decision. While I appreciate their opinions, I must strongly disagree. This is something that I honestly felt I needed to do. If you have a problem with that, I understand. The problem, however, is yours. This is not meant to be boast, excuse, or explanation. It is merely a fact. Those who claim that all challenges shall be personal will attack me for making a "friendly" challenge,
or else read something personal into it. Either way, I am prepared to accept and criticism that comes my way. With choices, come consequences. I have made my choice, and I shall accept the consequences, whatever they prove to be.

Just a question:

If you wanted to challenge someone that hasn't had a lot of challenges, why not Jeff?

He's held his ring for about 10 months now with a mere one challenge. AJ has had held his ring twice as long (about) but I believe this makes the number of challenges he has received around 10.

Anyways, good luck. You'll need it.

blahblahblablablanastynessandnegativityvenomandpoliticsblatherwhinemoancomplain.

There Percival...you happy?

Good luck to you of course. But I am afraid I'll have to stand on the other side of the ring this time.

War Bird,

I remember a time old friend when we used to dance the rings nightly....and I swore up and down then....that your number was mine. Many many moons down the line...and a strong friendship in between them all I realize...that even had I the strength of 100 Valheru...I would have never wrested the Second from you.

There are men who seek titles. And titles that seek men....you my friend, are the Second.

May you duel well and honorablly...as you always have.

Percival,

While I do not fault you for deciding to make challenge, I do have some concerns with some of your stances that are rife with contradiction and inconsistency.

You stated, "I have thought about challenging for some time, even since before I became truly active in the community, and the question was always the same. Who? This question remained unanswered, or at best partially answered, until this morning when the decision came upon me. The Baron Bird is a Loyal Baron, the most senior Baron of the Council, and, to my knowledge, went at least a full cycle without receiving any

While he cannot be blamed for this, one cannot challenge those who did not challenge him. The only way to remedy the situation is by challenging him."

Sir, in your response to a poll ((http://www.redgoblin.com/duelynoted/vol2iss4/poll4.stm)) asking what a good reason to challenge entailed, you wrote:

"...I can only think of two really good reasons. It may surprise you that each is at the opposite end of the spectrum. The first is quite simple. If a duelist wishes to test his own abilities and capabilities, he can challenge someone. If this is his reason, he should be careful in who he challenges. He should not select, as many do, the opponent he believes himself most able to defeat. Rather, he should select the
opponent he believes he would have the most difficulty defeating. This makes it a true, and quite proper and appropriate test. The second reason is also a personal reason. If the would-be challenger believes, for one reason or another, either that a specific titleholder has done him wrong or that he believes so named titleholder has done someone else wrong, either case in a manner unbefitting a Baron, he is more than justified in his challenge. Note
that the belief here is more important than the fact..."

I'm concerned with the contradiction you seem to put forth when you state in one place that the only two good reasons to challenge is first to challenge yourself against the toughest opponent, or for the personal reason that the Baron has done you wrong (or acted unbefittting a Baron), but then when you actually issue challenge it isn't because you find AJ to be a formidable opponent OR because he wronged your OR because he acted unbefitting
of a Baron. You challenged simply because he hasn't been challenged and since you can't punish those that didn't challenge him, you take it out on him. Nevermind that he's successfully defended his title numerous times, nevermind that he acts most befitting of a Baron.

Which is the real reason, for the record, please?

I also find it disappointing that you have a "do as I say, not as I do" attitude. You cry foul when Sartan speaks of conspiracy ("I was just struck by a thought" post) and you label him as alarmist, yet you cry that it is unfair and you rally to even the playing field and form a House specifically out of alarm towards your Overlord that chooses to test worthiness of challenges to his title (see "A New House Rises" further back on the corkboard).

You castigate Var for being "emotional" rather than logical (because you think it clouded his judgement) (reference: "A New House Rises") but yet you state in your challenge here, "Note that the belief here is more important than the fact."

Why is it acceptable for you to use emotion in the face of fact, but it is somehow far less acceptable for someone else to use emotion/belief when you express yourself in such a pontificating manner? The fact of the matter is, your belief is only applicable in your own realm of the world view but it is not shared by most others and it certainly does not hold more value to the rest of us than plain, logical fact.

In other words, I might believe the sky is red, but that it is factually blue is what matters to everyone else in logical, reasonable discussion.

Smiling as she reads of the challenge for her dear friend Baron Bird's ring, the angel decides to save her well wishes for later when she visits AJ and Sher.

Her voice quiet as she ventures from the boards, "Percy will need it...", followed by a silly giggle.

This is to make an announcement that I felt everyone should know. Because it looks like Khrys will not be able to make it tomorrow night due to the ambient weather conditions in the multiverse, there is chance that the match will be called by Bridgette Di Gregorio instead. Also, because of her schedule, the match will be at 9:00 by the Eastern Clock, not 9:30. We apologize for any inconvenience and confusion
generated by this.
Some may think that it is inappropriate for this post to be made by myself and not Ajay. I wish to assure them that he and I did choose this together, and that he needed his sleep. I made this post tonight because I wanted as many to see it as possible.
