Results of the Challenge for the Tenth
From: rdityger@aol.com (RDI Tyger)
Date: 10 Sep 1998 22:31:57 EDT
Tonight, I, Jaycynda Ashleana, did witness and officiate the challenge for the Tenth Baronial Ring, between Baron Agrenish Preescott, and the Warlord Var Medici-Giovanni.
The Warlord was dueling for the honor of his wife, the Lady Noelle Medici-Giovanni, with his first son, Lord Noble Morgan, standing as his second. He dueled under the colors of silver metallic swords clashing over the ocean blue, wielding his rapier, "Fallen Crew."
The Baron named himself as his second, and had no "Flower Girl." He dueled under the Banner of Notrodomius, primarily white with a couple ice blue stripes going across it, with two icicles in the middle. He wielded two dueling daggers, one named "Greenspot" and the other "Rusty."
They did proceed with the duel, in the Outback, dueling in the infamous Ring Styx, a grid of cross-beams fifteen feet above the ground level. The match goes as follows:
Round 1:
Balance doesn't come easy.. it takes practice... And it's even more difficult, when someone is coming for you... However, Var opens wonderfully, maintaining his balance with a quick twist of his blade, helping to turn back the thrusting Agrenish!
( TH/FLP ) 1-0 Var
Round 2:
Seeming sure of their balance now, both gentlemen move in once more... Slowly but surely they inch forward, only to bring rapier and dagger low, trying to trip the other. And all they do are meet weapons in the center.
( LC/LC ) 1-0 Var
Round 3:
If something works, do it again... At least that seems to be Var's idea. However, this time, as he parries fancily high, Agrenish waits, and catches his balance for the next round. No points.
( SH/FLP ) 1-0 Var
Round 4:
All playing aside, the two move in to meet once more, above the beams... Darting their weapons out, they both score as the dual thrusts hit, sending them away from the other once more.
( TH/TH ) 2-1 Var
Round 5:
This duel perhaps requiring more precision and skill than any other, these two must be tiring soon... As they move in, however, as we watch the flurry of blows, one might not believe that. Agrenish scores a nasty hit low, and Var returns the favor high.
( HC/LC ) 3-2 Var
Round 6:
Perhaps Var still hasn't recovered from the last round as he had hoped... Moving away from an imaginary attack, he cannot help but wonder if Agrenish is as balanced as his fancy flourish would make it seem.
( FSS/SS ) 3-2 Var
Round 7:
Having taken the last round as a break, the challenger and Baron move in once more... Sure of their footing, it seems. Coming within striking range, we again see the amazing balance, as Var keeps his feet despite another low cut, while Agrenish keeps his head while being
cut in return.
( HC/LC ) 4-3 Var
Round 8:
Var is now one point away from victory... regaining the ring he lost to the current Baron. Agrenish, on the other hand, only needs one point to tie the duel. Both sides of this situation have their risks, I would say. Were Var to make a mistake, Agrenish would be within victory. However, were Agrenish the one to make the mistake... Var would be a Baron once more. Slowly, the two duelers take measure of the other. At the last moment, Agrenish
darts forward. Var, reading it as a thrust, stop hits... And he reads it correctly, turning away the thrust for the winning point!
( TH/SH ) 5-3 Var
Thus did Var Medici-Giovanni succeed in his challenge, defeating Agrenish Preescott 5-3 in 8 rounds, and reclaiming the Tenth Baronial Ring.
The Baron has declared himself Loyal to the Overlord, Dalamar Ar'Daumon.

Well done Baron, Medici-Giovanni. I knew you had the fire and desire and you proved me right.
May you hold the ring as long as you hold the desire.

::Perusing through the corkboard that always seems filled in the Arena, he stops when he reads that not only was a challenge match held in the Outback, but that it was fought upon the ring he unveiled at the beginning of the year. Ring Styx...a ring of more than mastery of the duel (in whatever form), a ring of dexterity and of mental and physical aptitude. He'd had fun building that ring (or rather, designing it) and knew how much
Outback patrons "enjoyed" fighting on the narrow balance beams. He knew how tough it could be dueling up there and it wasn't something he particularly relished doing. Anyone who stepped up there and fought was a person he gave credit to, win or lose. Smiling to himself, the former Colonel hoped that the duelers had found their experience rewarding and was only sorry that he hadn't been there to witness it for himself::

My good friend Var.
My own, much belated, congratulations on the successful duel.
You have shown what I always knew of you, and sometimes had occasion to remind you... You are truely a fine dueler as well as a good and honorable friend.
