She was only nine when she came home, happy she had done well in class that day. The kids still teased her mercilessly about her mother, but she had learned to take that in stride. She knew what her mother was and that there was know way to know who her father was, almost any of the kids that teased her could be a half brother or sister and
not know it. She simply learned not to care, although sometimes late at night, she did care, alone and in private while she heard the noises from the next room.
But today, she did not care, she had been awarded the ribbon for mathematical excellence, proving her worth. She opened the door with her key and placed her books on the table beside the door and went directly to the open door of her mother's room, thinking it would be time to wake her from her afternoon nap. but, her mother wasn't alone, nor was she napping.
The man who had been sitting on the bed rose and the girl out the door slamming it in her face. She heard the beating her mother was getting and she ran out to get the town constable, but by the time they returned to the rooms where they lived, it was too late, the man was gone and her mother was dead. The girl fled into the streets of Rhydin where she learned to fight and use her wiles for those things she needed to survive.
