::peering around the dimly-lit basement with something less than enthusiasm:: Mulder, tell me again just what we're doing here?
<Mulder> ::stepping rapidly down the stairs::Investigating a case, Scully.
Shouldn't we start by finding the person who filed the report then? ::follows him down the steps, frowning at the odd assortment of weapons hanging on the walls and their obvious signs of use:: <m> Looks like some medieval dungeon down here...
::after several seconds of silence, peers suspiciously at her partner, who's flipping through papers tacked up to a kiosk in one corner:: Mulder? Someone did file a report on this, right? ::pause:: Mulder?
<Mulder> ::not turning, still reading, obviously stalling:: Well... not exactly.
Not exactly? ::getting that you're-not-doing-this-to-me-AGAIN tone, marches over to him:: Mulder, is there a case file on this or not? What exactly are we supposed to be investigating?
<Mulder> THERE! Right there! ::jabbing his finger at one of the messages, grinning in a way that would be smug if it wasn't so dour:: These boards are riddled with things just like this. Something's going on here, and we've got to find out what.
::takes down the paper to read it, then looks at him, very annoyed:: A conspiracy? ::sighs:: Mulder, conspiracy theories are as old as recorded history, probably older. Any time there is some sort of structured hierarchy, those who wish to move higher or change it struggle with those who want to maintain the status quo. If one side is extraordinarily good, or just extraordinarily lucky, at getting things their way, suddenly there's a conspiracy,
and every-
<Mulder> There's something to this one Scully, I know it. And if we dig hard enough, we could blow open the biggest, most corrupt secret government agency ever.
::eyes wide, can't believe he's pulling this:: Government- Mulder, this is a sports arena.
<Mulder> ::that smug, dour grin again:: You know, the Roman Emperors, if they thought one of their governors or aides was working against them, used to arrange their fall from grace and force them to spend the rest of their lives- what little of it they had left- fighting as gladiators in the Coliseum. Nice, friendly sport, huh? ::moves past her to search the Arena::
::watches his back, just sighs, exasperated, and shakes her head::
The Truth Is Out There
