The Mother of All Bad Nights
From: jolafici@aol.com (Jola Fici)
Date: 29 Sep 1998 09:49:18 EDT
As she was waking up, she realized right away that she felt different, but she wasn't sure why. As she opend her eyes and stretched, she was annoyed to see she'd slept through a whle day, because it was night again. And as she tried to push herself up to sit, she promptly fell to her left side, her left arm giving way under the weight. Except - she couldn't feel her arm, the sensors must be broken. <Damn Cybercrap> she thought. In the milliseconds it
took for these events, Wil Savage stepped from the chair he'd been sleeping in to catch Jola as she fell back, and he laid her gently on the bed, being careful with her shoulder where her left arm was missing.
"Uh...whose bed am I in this time?" Her voice was scratchy and her throat was painful. "It's me, Jola, Wil. Wil Savage." Both eyebrows raise. "Well, Wil - turn on the lights and tell me if we had fun...I must have been too drunk to remember. No offense there..."
His voice didn't contain the smirking quality it usually did. It was tired and worried. "The lights are on, Jola."
After a few seconds of silence, Jola understood.
"I can't see."
All memories of the horrific battle were simply not there.

It's strange how a place like the arena can grow on you. He came with the intension of one final look around the place when no one would be there, but what he found was Jola Fici laying near death upon the acid-etched stone floor, and two valiant men trying to save her.
Jola was only an acquaintance - nice enough, and more than pleasant to look upon, but just an acquaintance nonetheless. Yet, now she was here, in a small bedroom which also served as a recovery room off the even smaller medical compartment on his small star cruiser.
Her leg would surely be scarred where that creature's claw dug into her. The acid might leave other scarring, but only time would tell. I.I.S.C. (Interstellar Intelligence and Security Commission) Medical & Surgical could refit her with a hypercybernetic prosthesis that would be a quantum jump in the technology of the one she had. What concerned him most was her eyesight. If it were poison induced the homostasis unit would have corrected the
problem. No, there was something else at work here - and it worried him.
"I can't see," she said as she stared up to the ceiling.
Wil took her right hand--her only hand--in his, "Don't ya worry, doll. You've been through quite an ordeal. Your sight will come back. I promise." He hoped. "Right now you just rest. We're headed to a place that'll repair your arm and give you one most warriors and lovers would give their right arm for....or left, as the case may be."
He saw her smile at his weak attempt to comfort her. He leaned over and gave her a kiss and a gentle squeeze to her hand. "Ya know what they say, babe, if you've got your lips, you've got everything." They laughed and he excused himself to prepare some soup for her. It would still be several hours before they reached I.I.S.C. base Quad VI.

Jola frowned after she heard the door slide shut. Her arm must be pretty badly damaged for Wil to go to this much trouble for someone she didn't really know. She reached over to assess the damage by touch, and was shocked to find that her arm wasn't damaged, it was missing. She started from her shoulder this time, and didn't have to go far to find that her shoulder was all there was. Having been through this before, she didn't feel revulsion as some
might. Instead, she clinically assessed what she felt. Scarring, large amounts of it. Can only be the result of some kind of healing, which led to the questions of: Why had she needed healed? Why is she missing her arm?
Suddenly nervous, she began to pat herself down, to find out what else she was missing. She was vaguely amused to be in a nightgown of some sort, she'd thought Wil would have kept her nude. She had the rest of her parts, thankfully. She did feel some heavy scarring on her leg and her side. This, she knew, had to mean she had been in some sort of battle. But there was nothing she could remember.
She went through recent events in her mind. She awoke this...? ... morning in Valmion's bed. The day went normally enough, nothing much happening. She remembered eating dinner with Val, and a serious conversation...and then she woke up here, with Wil by her bedside.
And now, she was blind. And missing her left arm, yet again. And scarred. And missing a portion of her memory, she had no idea how large.
She was still frowning when Wil returned with the soup.

The night has past for the first Angel Attack. his messenger, Matariell, has engaged the First Child, Jola Fici. He had watched the entire battle through the numerous eyes of his sentinel, saw how Jola reacted, saw how Kalamere and the other attempted to aid her in the fight. He watched in satisfaction as the A-T field held the structure of the creature till the very end. He was actually taken by surprise at the moment Jola took to jam her arm
into Matariells mouth, thinking that she wouldn't try for something so brave and foolish. Then found how interesting it was to now know Jola had a cybernetic arm. He watched with pleasure as the creation's globe was fractured, then destroyed, causing the beast to self destruct. Oh, how things were going so well. He gathered a great deal of information with this. When Matariell was destroyed, he lost his line of vision, then quickly conjured a
seeing globe to witness the aftermath. Finding Jola unconscious, severely injured, left arm gone, and numerous acid burns.
"No matter, such is the price of the show."
He began his preparations for the next attack.
"Bishop takes Knight."

Wil Savage and Jola Fici walked down the cavernous hallway in a hurry to get away from the blaring sound of the Quad VI Spaceport. A mechanical, emotionless female voice announced the arrivals and departures with an echo off the steel walls which made the words deafeningly loud and nearly unintelligible. He heard the announcement of the arrival of a ship that docked immediately after him: "TRANS-STAR COMMERCE
LINE FLIGHT 4306 HAS ARRIVED AT BAY 5 AND IS NOW UNLOADING".
"No kidding," he murmured to himself over the echoing click of their own footsteps as they approached the 20-foot tall steel doors that separated the spaceport from the main concourse. Overhead was a sign that read: WELCOME TO QUAD VI - SPACEPORT OF THE FUTURE. Hydraulics pulled each half of the door in opposite directions. An electo-cart beeped its horn and slipped by them and through the door.
"Outta th way, Jack!" the driver shouted over his shoulder. Wil muttered a curse, took Jola by the right hand and followed on foot while reaching into the breast pocket of his leather flight jacket for his cigarettes. Jola couldn't see, she was overwhelmed by the sounds of the strange location, and she was in pain. Wil felt sorry for her, but there was little he could do to ease the situation. He had been trying to comfort her since bringing
her the soup on board his ship, but it is no easy thing to awaken and find you've lost an arm and can't see - and to have no recollection how it happened.
He lit the cigarette they would share and quickly led her to one of the ubiquitous TransTrain stops on Quad VI, hoping that the TransTrain lived up to its advertised slogan of "Never more than a ten-minute wait!"
He drew on the cigarette, placed it to Jola's lips, and quickly glanced at some of the others waiting at the stop. Two were obviously non-human, and from the olive green skin, eight-foot height and protruding bone structure where one might expect ears to be, he would bet the ranch that they were slave traders. Another was a "suit", a banker from Earth no doubt. A fourth was a Chloroid trader from Lironas -- green as a lima bean and sprouting
tendrils like a rotting potato. Perhaps it was good that Jola could see this riff raff from greedy little planets.
A TransTrain arrived and pulled in with a "whoosh". The doors opened rapidly and they stepped into the already too crowded public transportation. The doors closed and the TransTrain lurched forward and quickly picked up speed. A look at the route map printed high on the side of the TransTrain showed that I.S.S.C. Headquarters would be the fourth stop. Medical and Surgical would be located there in a building of its own.

Wil and Jola stepped off the T-Train at the fourth stop. There was no missing the I.I.S.C. Headquarters building. The huge gray-pink granite structure rose twenty stories while no other building in the Quad VI passed ten. The name, "Interstellar Intelligence and Security Commission." was spread across the front - beneath it was the glorious I.I.S.C. seal. Wil gave a half-laugh to himself and wondered how many
people here on Quad VI had even heard of Rhydin.
They came to the outside lobby area where a polished black-marble sidewalk indicated you were in I.I.S.C. territory. A television monitor at each side of the lobby broadcast the latest I.I.S.C. propaganda to the public as they passed by on the side walk. He looked up and caught a piece of the message from the well-dressed, professional woman who carefully articulated her words.
"WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN BRINGING TO YOU THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE YOUR LIFE THE BEST IT CAN BE. OUR RESEACH SCIENTISTS ARE CONTINUALLY LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR STANDARD OF LIVING TO BE THE BEST IN THE GALAXY. A FULL 30% OF THIS YEAR'S 80 TRILLION CREDIT PROFITS IS CHANNELED BACK INTO IMPROVEMENTS IN LIFESTYLE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
Wil heard all he could stomach. He turned away from the monitor and muttered to Jola, "Yeah, paid for with pay-offs from every greedy planet and trade organization in the galaxy." The doors opened automatically as they entered the inner lobby.
Once inside Wil had to stop to look around at the opulence -- seventy foot ceilings, marble and granite throughout, guards everywhere, the latest surveillance electronics surely picking up every move of every person anywhere in or around the building. He was sure they were already being watched. "Wish you could see this, babe. Not every day you get to witness such a waste of credits." They stepped up to the main reception desk. A woman in
uniform looked up, "May I help you?"
"Clearance to Medical and Surgical." He flashed her his badge with security clearance.
The woman smiled and pressed a button to allow him access to the area behind the reception desk and to the private elevator that was there. When he stood before the elevator the receptionist pressed the code that opened the door. Wil and Jola stepped in but did not look for a control panel. There wasn't any. The door closed on its own and the elevator sped on its express ride to the 15th floor where one could access a walkway to the Medical and
Surgical building.

They spent an hour in the Hyper-Cybernetic Prosthetics and Devices waiting area, going over specifications on various limbs. They chose one of the more standard limbs, nothing fancy, purely functional. The micro-neuron technology allow the arm to communicate with the brain and actually "train", gaining skill and coordination with use. It was fully insulated from electronic and radio frequency interference, microwave
reception, and radiative contamination. The titanium-vanadium-xeluene alloy, TVX for short, was practically indestructible. It was covered with natural looking and feeling Syn-Flesh which could withstand liquid temperatures to 425 degrees, and it was flame and acid resistant. The ATMN sensors (Advanced Threshold Micro Neuron) would allow normal feeling, but set the limit on the pain sent to the brain. All in all, it wasn't too shabby.
"I'm sorry Mr. Savage…," the medical clerk had approached with paper work, "…but we can only install such devices on employees and their families."
Wil thought fast. "Then she's covered. She's my wife. Isn't that right, dear?"
Jola nodded and smiled, "Marital bliss is just not the word."
"See," he patted her hand, "the little woman adores me."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Savage, but our records don't show you to be married."
Savage responded without hesitation. "Ah…that's because we were married on Rhydin. You know how slow their communications are…nearly stone age. I assure you, we're married."
"Okay. I'll correct the papers based upon your clearance. For family members we have a ten percent co-pay that is due up front."
Wil was afraid of this. "And just how much is my ten percent?"
"For that arm, let's see….it will be one million two-hundred thousand credits, sir."
Wil almost gasped out loud. "Well, there goes my retirement. Here, take it from my account." He handed over his cred-stick for the transaction.

Five hours later they were back in Wil's ship, headed for Rhydin at warp speed. Wil and Jola sat side-by-side in the command bridge, but little was being said. Finally Wil spoke up, "Can't you listen to reason?"
"I'm going to the challenge, and that's final."
"You are one stubborn….." he threw up his arms in exasperation. "That arm cost me plenty. Just don't go trying to duel tonight. Okay?"
"Okay," she said with a huff that added "mind your own business".
"I'm not kidding, Jola. At this point you have only about fifty percent control over the movement and coordination of that arm. It needs time for the micro-neurons to learn and become coordination with your thoughts and other sensory inputs. You go swinging a sword tonight an' you'll look like Edward Scissorhands on drugs!"
She gave him a look that said "shut up" but added a smile that was conciliatory.
"I can't believe I said you were my wife! I should've gotten a brain prosthetic!"
An hour later, and just in time, they arrived at the battlefield.

......Inside Jola's mind, talking to herself.....
One million, two hundred thousand credits. Where the *bleep* did Wil get so much money? This place feels a lot more familiar than home, that's for sure. The whine of the engines, the pulsing of the lights...I'd not noticed before how much I heard and felt without my sight.
The seats...the feel of flight even though there really isn't much feeling of movement..it's been so long since I've driven anything even remotely like this. Horses don't count in this league.
And Wil. He can be so freaking annoying sometimes. Who am I kidding? He's annoying most of the time. Still, I remember his sexy eyes...his...gah. I've spent more time in close quarters with this guy without sleeping with him than I have with anyone else who interested me since Ulath died, and even before Ulath and I got married.
Valmion...whoa boy, that was almost a mistake. Almost ruined a friendship over that...I hope he's not mad enough to end the friendship.
*snort* His wife...Mrs. Wil Savage...oh that'd be the day hell freezes over. But it was nice of him to do that. Makes me wonder what's in it for him, what he wants in return.
Khan Jorah...I'm remembering now. Bits and pieces coming clearer...your messages I remember. The fight...that's what's not so clear. But it's getting there, and soon I'll remember it all. You're not going to get away with whatever it is you're doing, scum. You didn't beat me, and you won't. I will take you to hell with me, and if that's home to you, I'll take you to heaven.
*chuckle* Wouldn't that be a riot.

**CRUNCH!**
***grrrrrrr.***
Jola's lft hand crushed the doorknob as she tried to open the door to go outside. It dismayed her that it was taking so long for the arm and hand to train. Oh well, she simply punched her hand through the door and yanked it open that way, with a shadow of her smirk on her face. At times, she wondered how well the arm matched her skin. It's kinda hard to let someone you barely know pick out your arm for you.
As she walked out of the manor and into the cool breeze, she just stood there and closed her eyes, thinking. Some people really had misconceptions about cybernetics. Some people assumed that her arm would be exceptionally strong in all ways. Simply not true.
Yes, her grip was significantly stronger than a real hand. Yes, if she used the joints in her elbow, or her wrist for leverage purposes, there was exceptional strength there. But, lifting something heavy with her shoulder, that was fully out of the question. Yes, the wires and underpinnings went deep enough so that her arm wouldn't just fall off or be torn off normally, but too much stress there would rip it right off her shoulder. Hah. This is why
she ended up with yet another new arm.
Each time, it hurt. The arms had limits on how much pain there was, but the shoulder, that was hers! People don't realize how much it hurts to have your shoulder joint ripped open, the real flesh of her shoulder rending apart. It still ached, very much. It still felt like someone had played hockey with her. Her shoulder, she imagined, was black and blue, or probably by now some sickly shade of green or yellow.
She opened her eyes, wishing she could look at the sky, the trees. Anything. What she saw instead was total blackness. No gray, no shadows, nothing. It wasn't even like when you close your eyes at night and see colors dancing... there was nothing.
Poor Jaycy, losing her voice. Somehow, she know that Sid would lose her hearing. Why? That was the mystery now. The attacks had commenced, but what was their purpose? They could have died, yes, but they didn't. Were they really even supposed to?
"Ulath, I wish you were here. I miss you."
She really, really hates being a pawn.
