::reads all the posts tacked up on the board, and raises an eyebrow::

... have all of Rhydin's duelers reverted back to their childhood antics? They sound like they are six and seven years old. As far as I'm concerned they are all annoying...

Collie laughs reading the comments and hangs up a note.

Seems some of the youngest active duelers, DoS and TDL, are among the most courteous.

Youngest duelers listed that I know of

Rhiannon Brock, age 5
Sabastian GoldRaven, I think he's 12
Aislain Uziel, age 8
Randel Adam, age 9 ?
Riley Lil, age 6

I have seen all of these young ones duel except Bastian. I can't show you a one that is rude or disrepectful to an opponent. I have never seen one of them throw a fit if they lose.

Acting like children? On the contrary.. Roland's daughter, Cabbinal and Claire's son Morte and Adonai's daughter, and my own daughter, that I have watched, have better dueling manners than many of the adults hereabouts.

On young duelists,

While I no longer duel, and as I told another, care nothing then for the policies and changes in our sport, this particular message of Collie's has frightened me. As a father of three children, I'm forced to question the well-being of a parent who sends their small children to do battle with swords, axes, and various other weapons of destruction.
I cannot see how a mother or father could stand by and idly watch while their six year old girl is rammed through with a broadsword, pierced and impaled upon sharp steel, then pushed back off the bloody blade. I hope and pray to every God or Goddess there may be that nothing like that happens to any of my children, and here ye submit yours to it every weekend.
There are hordes of nonsensical happenings within the Duel of Swords, but I see none as more tragic than the one stated here. Parents, please, be responsible for the well-being of your child. The Ward may protect from permanent physical injury, but the possible mental ones from the intense pain in such a crisis may live on forever.

Lupton,

The very same thing concerns me too. Children should be practicing with children in a children's arena. The Arena is much too violent for innocent young minds and bodies.

::is quite surprised when Wil reads this post to her::

"Well, wonders never cease. I actually agree with Lupton, I've said the same as he in posts many moons ago."

"Yeah, well don't tell him that. "

"Don't worry, I won't. He's obnoxious enough as it is.

Oh, really gentleman..

We have people dueling with feathers, pillows, staves, nerf swords, and last night a cucumber as well as blade. Are you too proud to admit one of these kids might defeat you?

Take Aislain for example.. an All Star in the TDL. She earned that rank. All of them earned their rank by hard work.

We were discussing childish behavior not children in the rings, but since Lupton opened the subject.. Next time a child wants to duel, why can't you pick up a practice blade and teach them. This is more than a bloodsport, people, this is supposed to be a community activity. If children aren't part of said community to be trained properly then who will be here to carry on when all of you have left?

One more thing to remember.. the Ward of Gondar is not picky about who it heals.

Children begin training in magic, martial arts, and other sports at young ages so they will be the best at what they do.

However, my point still stands and I saw no disagreement on their behavior.

Of course, some children may want to act like some duelists they idolize, and perhaps not inside the rings. Can we really expect a child to know that they can be hurt outside the rings, but cannot be hurt inside them? They may ventue outside of the safety of the Ward of Gondar to duel with real weapons, to pretend they are the Warlords they want to be like, not knowing any better.

Do you really want to risk something such as that happening?

This, Collie, has nothing to do with anyone's pride. This has everything to do with the safety and well-being of the young ones.

Tacks up a note.

Indeed, well said, Loopy and thee Morgan.

Colleen, the Wards of Gondar are not all powerful, they cannot protect every duelist, indeed, there are some who are harmed by magic rather than aided and others who are completely immune to the wards' healing.

Tis I doubt the fear of being beaten by a child carries as much sway as that a caring adult would not wish to harm a wee one. As the mother of three and stepmother to a fourth, I nor my husband, would not permit our bairns to cross steel at their young ages, though all of them, save our youngest daughter, have already begun extensive training in the use of many weapons.

My daughter, Brianna, a budding mage of no small talent, is always under a watchful eye when practicing her arts. My son studies the art of the blade, government and warfare under the most rigid and professional of tutors as does my stepson, the heir to the kingdom of Westridge.

What with the recent heinous assaults upon grown women in the arena, it strikes me as utter folly to even bring a child to the dueling house without a taking the most extreme precautions, let alone permit a young child to enter the rings. To expect an adult to duel in the dueling house arena with an unfamiliar weapon, a wooden sword, a nerf blade, a pillow, etc, to accomodate a child but perhaps gives the child a false sense of invulnerability, a
sense that may prove fatal should the child one day be faced with a killing weapon.

To offer insult to any adult who eschews a duel with a child is, to my mind, childish in and of itself and certes not the example I would set for my own bairns. Though many youngsters have danced in the rings, Young Dan, son of Queen Teleperien, Young Prince Arlingond, son of Lord Valmion, as well as wee Aislain, young Randal, young Rhia, Little Red, once my ward and adopted daughter of Elijah Basia Uhr, rest assured not only the spectators but
thier opponents were uneasy for fear of not only the possible injury they might sustain in the ring, but of the possible effect such violence would have upon their psyche. One needs but witness Jesse's attitude and aggression as he duels.

Jona.
Common as they come.

I know of a place children may duel children in the relative innocence of a play-ground environment.

Jona and all,

Jona, you say that your children have begun extensive training with blades. What is the difference in the psychological effects of training with a private trainer and training in the arena?

The difference is perhaps that the private tutor does teach them the mechanics of the weapon's use, but training in the arena does teach them there is pain involved. I suggest before you castigate me or the other parents for the involvement of their children in thier choice of sport, that you give your own children's training a second look. The question raised was not simply children fighting with weaponry in the arena, but at all regardless of
where they are trained.

Rhiannon is well aware of the pain involved and is not about to use one of her gifts to age herself like Agravain Uziel did, no offense meant, to look physically older than she is simply to quel the sensibilities of some of the people around here.

As to Jesse.. he's loud mouthed and arrogant out of the rings as well as in. I can't pass judgement on his parents for this behavior. I never met them. The first I saw of Jesse was last TDL season and as I recall he was 17 or 18 years of age, not exactly a child. If he started younger, I'm not aware of it. I do not believe that his aggression is set forth because he dueled as a young child. I believe that he has seen the example of many of the
adults here working out their aggression and expressing their opinions.

Now.. I see that my original point of discussing BEHAVIOR has been skillfully evaded. I object to the misbehaving people being compared to the children, who DO behave.

Thank you,

Community Members.

Going back to the actual topic at hand... Collie is quite correct. The younger children who duel here are quite polite and well mannered. I have tried to instill in my own daughter a strong sense of honor and respect, and will continue to do so for the forseeable future.
As for the issues of safety... I will never presume to tell others how to raise their children. Perrinis and I have agreed that Delilah will not be taught the use of weapons of war until she reaches her twelfth year, and not be allowed to duel until her sixteenth. I will, however, continue to bring her to the Arena, so that she can meet some of the same honorable people I met when I first came here... and so learn by the same examples that I
did.
We must protect our children, yes... but to shelter them from life could be more harmful than some of the events I've seen in the Arena.
In closing I would hope that, should my daughter be in the Arena and one of you saw someone threatening her... or any other child for that matter... you would be as quick and decisive to act as I would be.
I thank you for your time and attention.
