It took awhile for Jola to get her bearings once again, after the latest torment from Khan. When she realized where she was, she got out of bed and went looking - by feel and sound - for Jaycy. Upon finding her, she had to chuckle with embarassment as Jaycy said >>About time!<< and she realized that Jaycy couldn't do very much here, wasn't as mobile as Jola even with her sight.
"Oh, Jaycy hon, I'm sorry we haven't been taking care of you."
>>Heh.<<
Jola sat on the edge of Jaycy's bed for awhile in silence with Jaycy as she realized that the ship wasn't set up for mind speak. "Damn. I think we need to get your man-servant here."
>>Please!<<
Jola grinned. "Or maybe Rix. This is a nice, comfortable bed..." Jola "oofed!" as she got hit with a pillow in the head. Then she heard Jaycy's laughter in her head, and she grinned.
"Anything I can get for you in the meantime?"

"Gee," she thought dryly, " anything she can get me? Well, lesse here..."
>> Food would be nice, and a drink.... preferrably something strong, mind you, and oh! I WANNA SIT UP!! <<
Jaycy couldn't help but smirk at Jola's wince... she was going nuts, quite literally. Laying around wasn't helping anything, drannit. But she supposed she could live like this for a day or two... as long as she wasn't left alone with her thoughts.
>> And yes, someone who can speak for me would be a good thing too... <<
Silently, she thanked Jola as her friend nodded, then stood and felt her way from the room, only to return a few minutes later with several pillows to prop up the gypsy. It took some work, but between them, they finally managed it. With a smile, Jola said "I'll go see about something to eat. I'll be right back... don't go anywhere." Laughing, Jola's backside met the thrown pillow and made her way from the room.
As an afterthought, Jaycy called out to her friend. >> And if ya could manage to get Rix here, I'll forgive ya for bein' a pain! <<
From the other room, Jaycy could hear Jola's laughter, glad the woman knew she was teasing.

"Okay...okay, what's going on here?" Wil tripped over the pillow in the hall and stumbled into the ship's galley to find Jola laughing. "You women have my ship looking like some girlie sleepover," he complained between muttered curses. "That's what I get for bringing women on board. I must be crazy!"
He looked around the kitchen and didn't see the usual mess laying around. "What did you do with my mess? It took me weeks to create that mess. It was artwork... a masterpiece... a marvel of male mayhem!" She was laughing hysterically, and the more he complained the more she laughed. He finally just took her into his arms and kissed her soundly.
*****
They were now parsecs away from Rhydin and the trouble they left behind. It was a frustrating problem for Wil since the one behind all the harm wouldn't reveal himself. His scanner had picked up the Globe of Seeing, but he didn't destroy it since it could be used to trace where the images were being sent. His body armor seemed to provide all the protection he required, but as usual, it was only mildly effective for anyone held close to him. The
body armor was practically impregnable, but it didn't extend for more than several centimeters before it's strength fell off sharply. This feature made it useful for interactions with other humanoids and hand-to-hand combat, but at the sacrifice of providing little coverage to anyone else - which is exactly why it is referred to as body armor instead of shielding.
This trip back to I.I.S.C. Medical and Surgical would buy them a little time to regroup and obtain the necessary technology. This thing obviously had weaknesses that it was trying to hide. They would discover them.
*****
Wil and Jola walked into Jaycy's room with a quick rap on the door. Jola carried the food and Wil held her drink. Wil looked at her as she sat up and started the conversation. "So, beautiful...you sure you want to get better? I kinda like a woman who can't speak and is helplessly immobile. Conserves on the duct tape, ya know." He winked.
Jola would have hit him had her hands not been full with Jaycynda's lunch. Wil continued, "I just want you to know, Jaycy, we'll be on Quad VI in about five hours. It shouldn't take too long to get that leg repaired, and then we'll be getting you back to your hubby and kids.

"So, beautiful...you sure you want to get better? I kinda like a woman who can't speak and is helplessly immobile. Conserves on the duct tape, ya know."
Jaycy simply rolled her eyes at that. "Heh," she thought. "I doubt even duct tape would keep me down." She smirked to herself at that thought, but it was quickly forgotten as she spied the food and drink in their hands.
>> Fooood!! <<
As they reached her, Wil set a tray on the bed, and after setting the drink on it, took the plate from Jola. Jaycy gave it a once-over before taking the fork and digging right in. That was a good thing about mindspeech, she thought... she could eat and still talk.
>> Hey... is there any way to get word to RhyDin? I need Joel to send my letter of challenge to Evan before someone else does. << What she didn't know is he had already sent it, and she would need to be back in RhyDin soon... very soon.
She stopped her lunch suddenly, and blinked, Wil's last words just now registering in her mind.
>> I'll be home soon? Heh, nevermind about Joel, then. << She flashed them both a sheepish grin, before once more continuing her lunch.
* * *
Having devoured her lunch while talking idly to Jola and Wil, she sat back on the pillows, watching the gentleman for a moment.
>> What exactly are they gonna do to me? << There was a hint of worry in her mental voice, Jaycy still not used to all this technology.

Wil did not have the ability to mindspeak, for better or for worse he wasn't sure, so Jola relayed the question to him. He sat on the bed and took Jaycy's hand, looking very grave. "If you really want to know what they're going to do, I'll tell you. But let me warn you, it's not a pretty sight."
He could see her eyes widen and the swallow in her throat. He hid his grin, "Yep, not a pretty sight. In fact, they wrote a poem about it. It goes like this.
"There was an I.I.S. doctor, who's name was Gunter Hamm,
He was very fond of sausages, sourcraut, and Spam.
He had a great big butcher shop, the finest ever seen,
You see he had a side business of making sausage by steam.
Ohhhh, Dr. Gunter Hamm, how could you be so mean?
Pussycats and longed-tailed rats no longer will be seen,
For he would grind them up to sausage meat, in Gunter Hamm's machine.
Once there was a pretty lady who needed her leg to mend,
So we took her to ol' Dr. Hamm to fix that leg again.
He said, "Mine Gott in himel! This leg will never do!
I must remove it immediately! Besides, I need some meat for stew!"
Ohhhh, Dr. Gunter Hamm, how could you be so mean?
You'll be awfully sorry for inventing that machine.
Pussycats and long-tailed rats no longer will be seen,
For we grind them up to sausage meat, in Gunter Hamm's machine."
Wil paused to take a long, omnious look at Jaycy, who stared back in wide-eyed horror. He then took a quick glance to Jola who was doing all she could to contain a laugh. "I shall go on with the last verse."
"One day there was a problem, that machine...she wouldn't go!
Seems Khan Jorah had crawled inside to hide in there, you know.
But Dr. Hamm was hungry, and he would not accept defeat,
So he gave a crank, an awful yank, ...and Khan Jorah was meat!"
They all started to laugh and Jaycy gave Wil a good swat on the arm for playing on her fears. He threw back his head in laughter and held up his hands in defense. "Okay...I give! Truth is Jaycy, they will very likely put in a bio-synthetic skeletal brace to get your leg in top shape. It's not metal, but it's a tissue-based enzymatic compound that's tough as nails in the beginning and slowly breaks down as your own leg becomes stronger again.
Or, if necessary, they have one that will remain firm forever and make that your strongest leg. In either case, the operation will be quick and painless...so don't ya worry."
She smiled and thanked him.
Wil patted her hand and stood up again. "Yeah...the only thing that's going to be painful is the large extraction that needs to be made from my bank account! But don't you worry, the credits are just sitting there. And besides, Jola's going to pay me back with interest." He put his arm around Jola in a playful headlock. "What do you say, honey? Do ya think ol' Dr. Gunter Hamm will be in the mood for stew?"

She listened to Wil's talk of technology, utterly clueless, but not about to admit it. She just smiled and nodded, and thanked him. Inwardly, she was seething over the poem. On one hand, she had to admit it was pretty funny.. on the other, that was just plain mean. Grrr. She'd get him back... oh yes, she would. "Just wait until I get my voice back,
Wil Savage." She grinned, and Wil merely thought it was in good humor... oh how lil' he knew. Well, him paying for this would be good enough... for now. She hid her own evil grin as she watched him playfully got Jola in a headlock.
She tilted her head, thinking a moment. There was so much to do, and so little time. They had to stop Khan Jorah... heh, if only he was truly ground into meat. *That* would be nice. Ah, but if she got a penny for every wish... she'd be able to pay for this herself. But that wasn't here nor there. Right now her only concern was when she'd be walking again. She didn't understand what Wil had said, but she could only hope.
Pulling from her thoughts, she grinned to Jola, even though she couldn't see it.
>> Hey, hon? Beat him up for me, wouldya? <<

Wil put his arm around Jola in a playful headlock. "What do you say, honey? Do ya think ol' Dr. Gunter Hamm will be in the mood for stew?"
"That has got to be one of the most disgusting things I've heard from you, Wil Savage." This preceeded a tickle to his sensitive underarm and then more tickles until he let her go. Whether or not he was actually ticklish was beside the point, he was humoring her, at least, and his laughter showed that.
>>You got it, Jaycy<< she replied with her mind, before swatting Wil on the behind and turning for the door. She would have liked to walk straight out, but she had to feel for the doorway first, and she pouted slightly for effect "Gah, being sightless certainly ruins dramatic exits."
This brought a silent chuckle from Jaycy and another laugh from Wil who followed her out. Jola waited all the way until they got to their own room before doing as Jaycy asked.
"Hah!" she yelled as she jumped him....

Wil laid on his back, staring at the ceiling. A cigarette dangled from his lips and Jola slept in the crook of his arm. They still had about four hours to go before reaching Quad VI and he and Jola put the time to good use -- and boy was she good...very good. He smiled and wondered what life had in store for them. His thoughts were quickly interrupted by the ship's warning system. Red lights flashed and a warning siren sounded.
>>WARNING! WARNING!<<
>>UNIDENTIFIED VESSELS APPROACHING<<
>>SECURE RANGE WILL BE BREACHED IN T - 2 MINUTES<<
>>IDENTIFICATION OR EVASIVE MANUEVERS SUGGESTED<<
Wil and Jola both sprang from the bed, grabbing whatever clothes were closest to them as they ran down the corridor to the ship's bridge. Wil slid into the pilot's chair and glanced the the monitor which was flashing a "waiting" signal.
"Computer, scan the approaching ships."

"Computer, identify." Wil pulled on his pants and looked over to Jola who was doing the same. She sure looked good.

"Oh great! This is just great! Fabulous....just want I need now!" He looked over to Jola. "You can pilot a ship, right?" He didn't wait for her answer, "The controls are yours. Just try to keep them from locking onto us. I'm going to engage the weaponry. These are SECTOR ships, Jola. They want me dead....and they don't take prisoners."

Gasping silently, Jaycy started awake at the warning. She jumped so high, in fact, the tray that was before her was knocked off the bed, onto the floor... stew spilling all over the floor and the bed where she lay.
She had just gotten to sleep after her lunch, and was hoping to simply make the best of their time still in space, and what better way than by sleeping? Heh, but that didn't work out too well. Frowning, she looked
around, trying to figure out exactly what was going on. She knew from the word "warning" it couldn't be good, and the rest was just a jumble in her mind, passing through because she simply didn't understand.
She knew she just couldn't get up and walk around, so she did the only thing she could think of...

"Oh right! Like I can pilot without seeing any freaking thing!"
Jola scowled as she slid into the pilot's seat which Wil nearly shoved her into, leaving her jeans undone and her teeshirt only mostly pulled down. "Computer, talk to me."

Jola wrapped her hands around the controls and closed her eyes - not that she could see anyway. Fortunately, she had already played around with the ship's navigation systems enough to know the location of most of the controls.
She reached out with her mind to see if she could possibly locate the enemies with her newly developing psionics. To her surprise she discovered she could pick up on their electromagnetic signals, sensing the ships 435 km behind and slightly to port side, and 20 degrees above their reference altitude - exactly where the computer indicated. Using this as a guide to lock onto, her hands began to move on their own. It was almost as though she and the
ship became one.
Keeping track of the enemy ships with her mind, she lead the dance of death, fearlessly taking them on a rabbit chase though space.

"Oh right! Like I can pilot without seeing any freaking thing!"
Jola scowled as she slid into the pilot's seat which Wil nearly shoved her into, leaving her jeans undone and her teeshirt only mostly pulled down. "Computer, talk to me."

"Damnit, give me enemy ship positions."
