Thoughts of old - honor and truth
From: lordzephyr@aol.com (LordZephyr)
Date: 12 Oct 1998 20:59:02 EDT
It has been over three years since I have walked these halls, and probably longer since I have penned something worthwhile, but what I have read recently forces me to take quill in hand to put thought on paper.
Those few of you who have been around long enough to know me understand that I do not make comments on these boards without serious thought and soulsearching. Those of you who don't know are about to find this out.
I returned to Rhydin just last week after a little over 3.5 years of travels outside these realms. My heart was warmed to stop by these rings and see that the sport I loved was still alive. Very much alive. I was touched to see my name penned in the history books as I never thought anyone would remember- it wasn't the reason we danced in the rings. It wasn't the driving force in how we lived our lives.
I had forgotten that I was the first to hold the third ring. Barons. It was a noble concept. The land was growing, the sport was thriving, and groups of friends grew and gathered; not so much to aspire to a title as to share thoughts, words and company with those who we enjoyed.
It was a golden age- Gondor, Monk, Falon; the first of the Overlords.
They didn't care much whether you were a friend or foe. It wasn't important. What mattered were your convictions, and did you hold true to them? Did you live your life by them? Did you fight or die by them?
Friendships grew out of common convictions and died when those convictions clashed.
A list of the first to hold the rings...
Alkron, Sierra, Halo, Kalamere, Torquillan, Ulath, Elijah, John, Leto. Falon was Overlord. Some were friends, some were enemies- all were respected for their convictions.
I am saddened to see that this is no longer the case. In post after post, friendship is what is paramount. I had followed the posts concerning the Baroness Jaycynda's ascension to the third ring with more than a passing interest- the third was once mine, it was first mine, and I believed what it stood for. Her recent post asking for realignment was well penned, well thought out, but by my judgement missed the proper mark by miles.
She stated that her friendship was more important than politics. Now mind me carefully here. I do not mean to subject the Honorable Overlord, or any of the Barons, to attacks on their convictions. I know them too little and that is not why I write this.
The stated reason for a choice of alignment is why I write this.
I am baffled really, and am confused as to how to continue. Perhaps I need to ask a question before I speak farther? Maybe my confusion arises out of old age, fogged memories?
But do you really mean to say that you would set sword for someone whom you didnt agree with? Merely because they are a friend? Why? Would you uphold the person higher than the office? Higher than what the office stands for?
People live and die.
Honor and truth are forever.
Or have times chaged that much?
::he sighs heavily, feeling deep troubles in his mind, in his heart.::
I hope you can prove me wrong.

Good sir, all I hope is that is you will stay and not leave these corupted rings and try to help them turn to their now forgotten state. However, it is quite frankly very hard to do so unless the majority respects eachother for what they are.

Lord Zephyrus,
As a man that did hold true to his convictions...and always has. I can say that it is truely a different sport than you left. Uncompromising men are belittled and patronized now in this sport.
I am most apologetic that I have to tell you that conviction and belief are no longer what drives this sport. It has been changed to where once there was conviction, now there is politics,......or friendship, as in the current nobility....the words are easily interchangeable.
My beliefs...that is what I have stayed true to, and in that I have been publically ridiculed and insulted by the most *honorable* of our community. Yes m'lord....this place has changed extremely....and I also am saddened.
This change did not occur three years, nor even two years nigh...its more recent., and thusly more obvious. Many of the old guard have left the realm for brighter pastures....and I often question my own wisdom for not following them.
True to myself, and to this sport. So in that mayhaps...things have not changed much. But otherwise...welcome to a brave new world, and I believe I mean that in the most sarcastic fashion possible.
Welcome,
~Adonai Uziel

A Creed to Live By
Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others.
It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Don't set your goals by what other people seems important.
Only you know what is best for you.
Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart.
Cling to them as you would your life,
For without them life is meaningless.
Don't let your life slip through your fingers
By living in the past or for the future.
By living your life one day at a time,
You live all the days of your life.
Don't give up when you still have something to give,
Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect,
It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other.
Don't be afraid to encounter risks,
It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don't shut love out of your life,
By saying it's impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love,
Is the fastest way to lose love.
Is to hold it too tightly,
And the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don't dismiss your dreams.
To be without dreams is to be without hope,
To be without hope is to be without a purpose.
Don't run through life so fast,
That you forget not only where you been
But also where you're going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.

Adonai,
A man who's convictions shift with the turn of each season, will find it an easy task to remain true to himself.
Ironic that now you seek to equate politics with friendship, where some months ago you'd have rebelled at the very notion. Was it not friendship to Dalamar that you held above else when I had challenged for your ring? That despite what disagreements you had with the Overlord, your friendship had bound you to him in loyalty?
Now, some months later, you find politics and friendship interchangeable. The season has changed from summer to fall, so none should find themselves surprised.
Grandel wrote that "honor and truth are forever," and you, Oathbreaker, have the gall to respond as if you agree with him. Beyond holding true to your own, ever changing, convictions, I do not believe you truly understand the meaning of those words. It would appear that, rather than agreeing with this duelist of old, you have found another outlet to cry foul at those who have "publicly ridiculed" you.
Those who frequent the arena are not prone to fault a man for his convictions. Certainly, I can think of no time when it has happened to me. It is in being false to others that ridicule comes. A man's word being the mark by which his honor and value of truth is measured Your word has proved as pyrite in a field of gold, and thus any ridicule is well deserved.

Grandel,
My apologies if I have sullied this line of writing. The thought put into your missive was obvious and the points superbly stated. I truly hope that this disagreement with Adonai shall not detract from your words.
Welcome back to the arena good sir.. I hope to see you in the rings.

For those of you who have better things to do than read mindless drivel, like Adonai's writing, I present to you...
Jesse's Notes: A summary of the important points and themes in the lengthier writings of our time.
Here is the summary for the current issue:
Waa, Waa. I am Adonai. Pity me because I am perfect and have been wronged by all the horrible people here. If you placed a piece of coal in my arse, it would come out a diamond.

::sits down and carefully decorates her paper with lots of hearts and flowers and little curly ques. After more than an hour of drawing, begins to pen::
Monsieur Ar'Din,
Papa is not a pirate in a field of gold, he is the bestest most honorable dueler in the whole world, and because you do not like what he says does not mean that you should write nasty things about him. ::carefully ads a second sentence to the paragraph like her tutor Monsieur Cannard taught her:: That is rude.PTSIZE=10>
Papa would not let me say mean things about you when you challenged him. He told me I was naughty and made me say I was sorry in the very nicest way. I was very very very very very polite and I even gave Kalamere the Dragon the SPARKLE bow to wear at the challenge so everyone would know that he was the prettiest dragon. In fact Kalamere is a very good dragon usually, although sometimes he nibbles
on Jona's toes and I have to put him in the corner and give the sparkle bow to Dal who likes to eat Sparkle bows. But Randy won't let me give Dal Sparkle bows anymore because he says that Dal is a Boy Cat and Boy Cat's wear eye patches and not sparkle bows. Is that true?
But now you are rude to papa, and yet papa says I can not be rude back, for children are not allowed to be rude: only very old people with big black sticks and backs that creak and white hair that curls at the ends and turns yellow and who always hover when they sit down for a few seconds until gravity takes over and then they PLOP into the chair making it creak and if you giggle you get your hair tugged by Ellen who says its not polite to giggle at
adults when they sit down.
Monsieur Ar'Din, perhaps you do not agree with Papa or maybe he does not agree with you: which happens all the time because usually if you don't like someone they don't like you too unless you are a Brussel sprout - because Brussel sprouts like everybody and keep coming to dinner no matter how much you hate them.
Ergo! :;giggles because her tutor taught her that:: Papa is not a Brussel sprout and neither are you so you must not like each other very much. But you really aught not tell everyone how much you hate someone all the time. Marme says that makes you a bore and people will stop listening to you if you drone and drone and drone. That is unless you are

Oui Mon Cher Jesse,
Papa could make diamonds out of anything! But he doesn't ask for pity, you must have misread. That is probably because you are so excited because you are going to win another ring and then we will have two rings, but we won't because you gave the other back because you did not want it, so we will only have one ring. But then who wants one ring when we could go off and capture a gallon and drink all the milk by ourselves because we are Pirates.

::decides to open a fresh sheave of parchment, rather than muck up a fairly honorable post with bickering with fools::
Lord Zephryus,
As I said....a very different place. Welcome back.

Aislain pauses before she leaves, then squeals excitedly seeing a poem. Excitedly she reaches up, her small fingers ripping it slightly as she pulls it down. "Marcus a story!" She yelps, her eyes already scanning the words.
Marcus tosses a dirty towel under the bar and vaults it with a swoop. Joining her, they bend thier heads together for a few moments. A small frown crinkles Ais' brow. "Where are they princesses?"
Marcus shrugs and mumbles something about no dragons either. With a resigned sigh, Aislain tacks the crumpled poem back up on the board, wondering again at the odd tastes of old people.
